Friday Favorites {#135}

Hello and Happy Friday! Why do the short weeks always feel so long? We had a great week with a couple of extra days off, sports, and some early birthday celebrations.

As always, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Here are some favorites from the week:

School photos arrived, and Hadley said that they look like grown ups. She’s not wrong!

Hadley got her braces off a couple of weeks later, but I’m glad to have this moment in time forever!

Also, the day they had school pics, I picked the kids up from school. When Hayden got in the car, I asked him if he got pen on his shirt before or after the photos were taken. He said,”After.”…Hmm…shaking my head.

Another favorite was an unexpected four day weekend. Due to high rates of illness and teacher absences, we didn’t have school on Monday. Obviously, I’m thankful my kids haven’t been sick (nor have I), but I hate that so many have been these past few weeks. Since I knew we also had Tuesday off for Election Day, I let Monday be more of the fun day while Tuesday we had schoolwork and chores to do. So, Sunday night, Hadley spent the night at a friend’s house, and Hayden played about five hours of Xbox on Monday!

Tuesday, they slept in, we had lunch with family for early birthday celebrations, we raked leaves for a couple of hours, and the kids had some homework and studying to do.

*Early* birthday cards for the kids are always a favorite...

…as are silly selfies I find on my phone.

On Sunday, I put one pencil tree up in the living room until we get our real one.

Then, on Monday, I put up the other one in the sun room.

If having a favorite pencil tree up the same time as having a glowing pumpkin out is wrong, I don’t want to be right!

I voted on Tuesday which is always a great feeling.

Over a week ago, Travis and Hayden used the leaf blower to blow all of our leaves into piles under our three trees. With the nice weather on Tuesday, (and Travis working so much), the kids and I bagged 25 bags of leaves. Joke’s on me! We need at least 30 more bags to finish the other two trees.

Lexington typically has dates that if all your leaves are on your curb, they will drive by and suck them up with the vacuum. Well, due to staffing shortages, they aren’t doing that, so that’s why we are back to bagging. The kids were big help, but I needed two Tylenol that evening.

Hadley’s volleyball team had a big win this week against a cross town rival. It was amazing to see how much better they were from game one last week to game two this week!

And…last night, Hadley served 12 straight points including the game point. Serving is something she knew she’d need to work on this season, and we’re so proud of her that her hard work seems to be paying off.

Favorite Mom Meme:

Right?!? I swear, all I find now are empty candy wrappers from Halloween, water bottles, and cups in their rooms!

Favorite New Follow:

I have a fave new follow on Instagram – @karikampakis

Raising teens is hard, y’all. This account is a best selling author and mom to four girls. She has so many great posts talking about being an encourager, helping your daughter find real friends, teaching your child to trust their intuition and more! Whenever these posts are on my feed, I always stop and read them.

Bonus Fave: Flashback Friday

This sweet memory before Sesame Street Live popped up from 2013. This was a part of the kids 4th birthday present, and they were so excited.

Blog Challenge Part 1

Hello and Happy Thursday!

Well, I’ve had my blog for over three years, and every once in a while I kind of draw a blank on what to share! So, I turned to the place I find ideas on all the things…Pinterest! I found a few different “blog challenges” with topics. Sometimes, I think I put pressure on myself to write full, lengthy posts. It might just be the English teacher in me!

So, I think over the next few months, I will occasionally chip away at the topics in this challenge. I like that some of these topics are quick and easy while others will require a bit more thought.

Also, I will most likely combine some of the topics as I know I’ve covered some of these in some way. That being said, I also feel so lucky to have new readers who might not have seen some of these posts!

1. Introduction:

My first ever blog post was published on August 4, 2019, and it was a little introduction about myself.

The short and sweet of it is…I grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, went to school at the University of Missouri and moved to Kentucky when I was 24 years old. I met Travis while at MU, and he’s from Louisville. He wanted to get into the horse business, so Lexington made the most sense for us to start our lives together here. We have boy/girl twins who will be 13 in less than two weeks. I’ve been a teacher for over 20 years which is so hard for me to believe! Blogging is a hobby for me, and it’s been such a fun thing for me to spend time doing.

2. Twenty Facts About Me:

A few weeks later, I followed it up with another post with 10 random facts about me.

To stay true to this topic, here are 10 more facts about me:

11. I love to read. I almost always have a book on my Kindle and a book on my bedside table.

12. I’m a high school English teacher (This is my 21st year in education)

13. I have one brother who I consider one of my best friends.

14. I’m a dog lover. If we lived on lots of land, I think I’d have 10 dogs at least!

15. I’m pretty introverted and quiet until I get to know someone.

16. My favorite place to be is on the beach with my toes in the sand, a view of the water, and a book in my hand.

17. I love to watch sports. As a family, we go to most of the home UK (Kentucky) football games. I joke that I don’t “bleed blue” like the rest of the family, but I’ll cheer for the CATS. I cheer for MIZZOU as well as the KC Chiefs and KC Royals.

18. Fall is my favorite season.

19. I have a very type A personality. I like to have a plan, make a list, and feel accomplished at the end of the day.

20. I love nothing more than a rainy, lazy Sunday, but Thursday is my favorite day of the week.

3. Meaning of My Business Name:

I’d wanted to start a blog for quite a few years, but I always wondered who would read it, and I struggled with the name.

In 2019, I remember that we were all in the car driving Hadley to summer camp. I told Travis on the way home that I’d thought of a name: Show Me and Sweet Tea. He said, “I like it!” which was the final bit of encouragement I needed to figure out Word Press and get my first post published!

Here’s my explanation of my blog name from my first Introduction post:

“I realized I should combine my past (my roots) with the present (my life) to form the name. I was born and raised in Missouri, so the ‘Show Me’ state will always have a special place in my heart. I’ve lived in Lexington, KY for fifteen years, and while you won’t hear me say, “Bless your heart,” my love for a good monogram and a “Hey, ya’ll” shows that I’ve picked up a bit of the south through the years, along with a sip (or two) of sweet tea.”

By the way, this is very “on brand” for me to go from “what should I write about” to cramming three responses into one post!

As always, thanks for reading…and let me know if there are any topics you’d like for me to write about!

See you back here tomorrow for Friday Favorites.

Breeders Cup

Hello and Happy Wednesday!

I’m finally getting around to recapping our Saturday at Breeder’s Cup.

I’ve shared about the October/April meets at Keeneland as well as Oaks at Churchill Downs, and today’s post is about Breeder’s Cup.

A Few Facts:

  • Breeder’s Cup happens every year in November and the races are all Grade 1.
  • It’s a year-end championship for North American Thoroughbred racing.
  • It’s a two day event with Friday’s races consisting of two year olds and then other ages on Saturday.
  • The biggest race is the Breeder’s Cup Classic on Saturday with a purse of $6 million dollars.
  • Keeneland hosted in 2015, 2020 (but there were no spectators), and then this year as well.

We went with our friends in 2015…

…and here we are this year! It was such a great day.

To prepare for Breeder’s Cup, Keeneland installed temporary seating throughout the facility to increase capacity from 20,000 people to 45,000 people. They added more seating with additional boxes and five chalets. We were in a chalet by the final turn which is where we were in 2015 as well.

The chalets are huge with buffets, bars, and big screen tv’s. We did say that we preferred the “aesthetic” in 2015 because they had couches, high top tables, dimmed lights, and different spaces to hang out. This just felt more like “how many people can we fit in here if we just keep adding tables and chairs?” Anyway, needless to say, our table was the most fun 😉

Besides the buffet, at various times, servers came around with snacks like pretzels, cookies, and more. There were many betting stations as well as tables to grab waters and soft drinks as needed.

At one point, the ladies hopped on a golf cart to visit the gift shop.

At the gift shop, we saw Carson Kressley shopping!

For most races, we’d go outside and stand by the rail. The weather was warm and windy which felt unnatural for November!

After one of the races, we snapped a few pics…

…as well a one with the ladies, the guys, and the group photo…

…and a group selfie. (Our friend Scott is a big self guy…he’s tall and comes in handy for photos!)

Yikes! I need to clean my mirror, but here’s a closer look at my dress.

I bought this dress from Avara, and it won’t be my last! They have such cute and affordable dresses and easy returns. I paired the dress with my Target boots that I’ve worn many time so far this fall.

The Breeder’s Cup Classic is the second to last race. Frontline, the favorite, won easily.

Travis and friends usually have multiple bets going on throughout the day. I can’t even begin to understand it all, but they have fun. They usually come thisclose to winning big by the end of the day, but tracks aren’t built on winners. haha

One of the wives picked this up at the gift shop, and of course, we needed a pic after the final race.

As we were walking out, we couldn’t help but admire the amazing sky. The official color of The Breeder’s Cup is purple…and just look at that sky!

We left around 6:30, and didn’t have a dinner reservation until 8:30. That being said, of course traffic was crazy. Travis was lucky enough to have a pass, so we didn’t have to walk too far to get to our car.

Once we got to the restaurant, Frank and Dino’s, we hung out at the bar and had a couple of appetizers.

Then, we were seated and had the sweetest server. It sounds like they were slammed on Friday after Breeder’s Cup, and learned a few lessons. It honestly didn’t feel like we had to wait too long for our food, but we appreciated her being up front about it all.

I got the pesto gnocchi, and it was delish. If gnocchi is on any menu, I order it.

We all hung out, ate, and chatted before grabbing an Uber and calling it a night.

Of course we had to have a dinner selife!

We got home around 11 and headed straight to bed! It was a long day that started at 6 AM to get to Hayden’s cross country meet in Louisville.

Let’s just say I was very grateful to “fall back” that night!

Good friends can be hard to come by, and this is a special crew. All of the guys are Trav’s friends from college. Two of the couples live in Lexington like us and see each other somewhat regularly. They were some of my “first friends” when I moved here 18 years ago and didn’t know anyone. The other two couples live in Nashville, and we try to see them once or twice a year.

Anyway, it was a great day. I hope Keeneland hosts the Breeder’s Cup again in the next few years.

Day in the Life…on Instagram

Happy Tuesday! Election Day, Tuesday!

Well, I never got to my Breeder’s Cup recap like I thought I’d have time to do yesterday, so I’m keeping today’s post simple.

I love reading Day in the Life posts, but I also love following along “in real time,” when others share on Insta.

Since it’s not often I have a random Tuesday off, I thought I’d share a bit about my day today.

So check out @showmeandsweettea on Instagram a time or two today.

Also, let me know if you have any blog topics you’d like for me to chat about this week or soon. I kind of feel a little uninspired lately, so let me know!

I hope your week is off to a great start.

Weekend Top 5

Hello and Happy Monday! How was your weekend? We had a great one filled with some downtime, a cross country meet, the Breeder’s Cup and more.

Today, I’m linking up with Sarah and Holly for Hello Monday…

…to tell you about my:

Here’s a peek at our weekend:

On Friday after school, I had a few errands to run. I stopped by Bath and Body because I was wanting to pick up a few fall candles (hoping they’d have them on sale). Well, there were no fall candles to be found, but I picked up a few winter ones because they were on sale.

I got:

  • Marshmallow Fireside
  • Peppermint Sugar Cookie
  • Snowy Coconut Frost

Then, I stopped by Ulta for shampoo, and then I picked up my Kroger Clicklist order. I was home by 4:30 and felt so accomplished!

We were up sooo early on Saturday to go to Louisville for Hayden’s cross country race. This was his first club race of the season. Travis has been coaching the Lexington group, and it was so fun to watch runners come together for this Middle School National meet. Hayden was running with the 7th and 8th graders, and had an PR for the 4k race. Last year, I remember the weather was so cold for this race. This year, was warm with major winds. Crazy November weather.

The kids stayed in Louisville with Trav’s family, and Travis and I hopped in the car, changed our clothes at McDonald’s and headed to…

…the Breeder’s Cup at Keeneland. We had such an amazing day (and night) with our friends. (More about Breeder’s Cup tomorrow!)

After such a busy Saturday, I was all about “falling back…” Travis was up early on Sunday for work, and I slept in a bit. That being said, by 9:00, I’d changed the sheets on two beds, unloaded the dishwasher, and put up one of my favorite skinny trees.

I will keep this tree here until we get our real one after Thanksgiving. Then, I’ll move it to our bedroom.

A few lights seem to be out, but it makes me happy.

Not only did Hayden run a 4k on Saturday, he then got up early yesterday and ran 6.5 miles yesterday with his cousin. Then, he had an amazing basketball game. It’s always fun watching him do his thing.

Well, this week is off to an odd start. We don’t have school today due to sickness. We were already scheduled to be out tomorrow for Election Day, so I guess they are hoping having today off will give those who are sick an extra day of rest, and I know the custodians are going to deep clean the schools. I will say on Friday that my school had over 30 teacher absences with 18 of them unfilled. So, I’m guessing today’s decision was also due to lack of subs.

Anyway, I hope everyone stays healthy! I know flu and RSV are rampant.

I hope you have a great day,

Friday Favorites {#134}

Hello and Happy Friday!

How was your week? We had a really good one that included Halloween, volleyball, school and more!

I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Here are some favorites from the week:

A few fun favorites:

Last Friday, I went to see Heather McMahan’s live taping of her show for Netflix. We’d gone to see her back and January, and were excited to go again. We all met at our friend’s house for carryout Mexican food and drinks. Then, we went downtown for the show. The show was a mix of the material from January as well as some new material too. It was a great evening!

Since it was a taping, we couldn’t have our phones out during the performance. Heather looked stunning, and she snapped a photo with the audience at the end.

On Saturday, Hadley went to Great Wolf Lodge with a group from school. She had so much fun.

Halloween Fun:

While we were at the Heather McMahan taping, Hadley and the Student Council were hosting a haunted house. It was quite the success.

Look at my zombie volleyball player! haha

My brother’s kids made some sweet treats for us and dropped them off on Saturday.

We had our “spooky dinner” on Sunday night. I made mummy dogs and brains for dinner…with a side of eyeballs.

Halloween on a Monday should always be a hard no….but it was a great evening. The weather was perfect. Hayden threw on a jersey at the last minute to be a football player while Hadley was a construction worker with her friend.

Hadley and friends ran around the neighborhood together while Hayden and his friends did the same thing. They scored so much candy that it’s ridiculous!

Travis and I hung on the front porch to pass out candy. Honestly, I had a moment of sadness when I realized the last time I sat on the front porch and passed out candy was 2009 when I had a very big pregnant belly. This time has gone by in a blink, but I’m glad the kids were close by and had fun with their friends.

I went to grab a cup for my wine and laughed at my choice! While it’s a Christmas sentiment, I think it applies to Halloween on a Monday!

Volleyball:

Hadley had her first volleyball game this week! Volleyball is one of my favorite sports to watch, so I’m definitely looking forward to watching them this season.

She’s having fun with friends which is definitely a bonus.

Favorite Mom Meme:

This made me laugh way too hard…

Bonus Fave: Flashback Friday:

This throwback to 2013 is one of my favorite photos. So sweet and festive for Halloween.

Weekly Recap:

Here are my posts from the week:

What are your weekend plans? We don’t really have anything tonight, but tomorrow Hayden has a cross country meet, and then Travis and I will spend the day at Keeneland for the Breeder’s Cup. I’m one of the weird ones who loves the time change (in the fall), and I have feeling I’m going to need that extra hour of sleep by Sunday!

Thanks so much for reading.

Five Fall Fits

Happy Thursday!

“Fit check” …if you have tweens or teach high school, you know what I’m talking about #IYKYK

With the weather finally cooling off (although, we have highs near 80 this coming weekend!), I’m sharing a few outfits that I know will be in the rotation this last month of fall!

1.

This oversized plaid flannel is a new addition to my closet. Because it’s a hi-low style, I’ve worn it with leggings, and then I wore it with skinnies and loafers to school one day.

2.

My apologies for the dirty mirror, but I wore this outfit when we went to Keeneland a few weeks ago.

I have this shirt in crimson and gray, and I got it from Target last year. The skirt is from Loft, and I’ve had it for years. I found it when I cleaned out my closet this summer! I paired this outfit with my new Target boots.

3.

This is my weekend “momiform.” My new Stitch Fix jeans, my fave Birks, and this cute sweatshirt from “SweetMommaBlair” Etsy shop.

I have a few sweatshirts from them, and they have so many cute options including lots of KC, Mizzou, and St. L gear!

4.

Leopard shirt two ways! This shirt is from Stitch Fix, and I’ve had it for a couple of years. I’ve recently paired it with my distressed black jeans from Target, that I purchased last year, and my new Amazon mules. {affiliate link}

Then, I wore the same top when we went to see Heather McMahan last week. I paired it with flare jeans from the Loft (that I picked up last year) and my favorite suede wedges from Nordstrom Rack that I’ve had for years.

5.

This mock neck Steve Madden sweater dress from Nordstrom just came in the mail. I haven’t yet worn it out and about, but I think it looks cute with the mules and then more casually with sneaks! It comes in a variety of colors. I know booties or my tall boots would look cute as well. I think I know what I’m wearing for Thanksgiving. 😉

While I can’t link much, I’m happy that I’ve been able to mostly “shop” my closet recently. That being said, I hope these outfits can provide a little “Fall Fit” inspiration! What are your favorite clothing items to wear in the fall?

See you back here tomorrow for Friday Favorites.

Currently

Hello!

Shew! I’m not sure which day is more crazy at school: Halloween or November 1st when the kids are all hyped up on candy!

Anyway, I’m excited to link up with Jennifer as she has recently taken over the Currently link up.

This month’s focus is Currently: borrowing, buying, planning, prepping, and reading.

Borrowing:

Library books! I haven’t started one of these Christmas books, but I hope to soon!

Buying:

Well, I did hold off until a couple of days before, but I have been buying Halloween candy!

Now, it’s time to start buying birthday gifts for the kids.

I also jumped on the On Cloud train. I realized I hadn’t purchased new workout shoes since Spring of 2020. Travis actually had a gift card to an local place, so we went there on Sunday. He’s picky about this tennis shoes and mostly wears Hokas, but he’s loved his new On Clouds. The pair I found were on sale which was an added bonus!

Planning:

…the kids birthday party! In only a few weeks these 12 year olds…

…will be teenagers!

I think the plan is to go to Activate Games for fun, pizza for dinner, and cookie cake for dessert one day soon.

Prepping:

I’m trying to prep for a busy November and December.

I’m starting to make “to do” lists for their birthday party as well as making lists for birthday and Christmas gifts. I think I’ve taken care of our Christmas card, want to start changing out the fall decorations for Christmas decorations, and more. I don’t think we’ll have another free weekend (like we had this past weekend) until 2023. Honestly, sometimes that feels very overwhelming to me, but I’m just taking it day by day when needed.

We’re kicking off November with Breeder’s Cup this weekend.

Here are a few pics from the last time Breeder’s Cup was in Lexington in 2015! We can’t wait to see so many of our friends and spend the day at the races.

Reading:

I just started The Things We Cannot Say, and so far, I think it’s really good.

For the first time ever, I didn’t finish a book on my Kindle before the library took it back! Ugh. I’ve placed a hold for The It Girl, and hope to pick up where I left off whenever it’s my turn again. I’m really hoping it’s not 6 weeks from now like the library predicts.

Also, I hope to read one, if not both, of the Christmas books I picked up last week.

What about you? What are you currently borrowing, buying, prepping, planning, or reading?

Prime Purchases: November 2022

Happy November 1st!

Wow, I feel like October went by in a blink. November is a busy month in our house, so I’m sure I will have the same sentiments about November.

I’m linking up with Tanya to share my Amazon purchases this month.

Here are my purchases this month:

Clothing:

I have this same light weight sweatshirt in black, and I also purchased it in light green. I wear both colors pretty often both with denim, skinny pants, or leggings.

I shared these mules in my Friday Favorites post last week. I think they are my favorite most recent find! I’ve worn them a few times to school and have gotten compliments each time I’ve worn them. The suede material is perfect, and I love the gray neutral color.

Fun fact: I only wear black no show socks when working out. I’ve had the same six or so pairs for years, and well, I’m not sure where they’ve all gone. Even though I don’t mix up our clothes when washing them, so many of my pairs have disappeared.

I purchased this ten pack of Hanes socks, and they are just what I needed to replace my missing pairs!

almost 18,000 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 star reviews

Health:

I swear my hair isn’t as thick as it used to be. It’s not obvious, but it is to me. I’m not sure if it’s a post-Covid thing or what. My hair stylist suggested mixing a few drops of rosemary into my shampoo when I was my hair, and that has helped some of her clients. I’ve been doing that for the past month or so. The only “issue” is that I only wash my hair 2-3 times a week, so I’m not sure that it’s helping much. I do love the scent of rosemary, so I’m definitely going to continue doing this.

That being said…

…She also suggested a scoop of collagen. I’ve seen many people suggest this brand, so I thought I’d give it a try. I know loss of collagen is definitely something that happens with age, so I’m hoping that putting a scoop in my coffee in the morning will help all the things.

Over 195,000 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 star reviews

Lastly, I’ve started incorporating a new Beachbody program into my workout routine. 4 Weeks for Everybody with one of my favorite trainers, Autumn, is a great low impact program. I do one or two of those workouts a week, and needed a stability ball.

Almost 9,500 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 star reviews

This was another relatively light month of purchases for me which is probably needed considering how many things I will probably buy in November and December.

What have you purchases lately? Happy Priming!

Happy Halloween

Hello and Happy Monday!

What’s scarier than a Halloween on a Monday?! Yikes!

Today’s post is all about Halloween fun with these two graphics I found on Pinterest (c/o @acaracollective). I’ll share them on Insta today. Let me know your answers!

Halloween Favorites

  • Candy: It’s hard for me to resist chocolate…especially a small Snickers or Butterfinger.
  • Movie: We always try to watch It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. While it’s not a movie, it’s a favorite. On Fall Break, we watched The Addams Family which was fun.
  • Costume: I’ve shared before that my favorite costumes the kids chose were when they were Batman and Robin. So cute.
  • Activity: Our favorite fall activity is going to the pumpkin patch. For quite a few years, we’d go to Transylvania University here in Lex to see all the pumpkins lit up. Covid changed that, and then we haven’t been able to make it there the past couple of years.
  • Character: I don’t know that a ghost is a “character,” but he’s cute!
  • Tradition: I love our pumpkin carving tradition.

This or That:

  • Trick or Treat: Definitely treats…no tricks!
  • Not so spooky movies or scary movies: I guess I’m a scaredy cat…I prefer not so spooky movies.
  • Apple cider or PSL: I used to love PSL, but now I prefer a lighter version. Apple cider is good, but I prefer it hot.
  • Pumpkin patches or haunted houses: Pumpkin patches all the way!
  • Buy a costume or make a costume: Buy a costume, for sure. Thank goodness for Amazon. I do remember my mom making a few of our costumes when I was a kid. Then again, Amazon didn’t exist!
  • Craft or carve a pumpkin: We love to carve pumpkins.
  • Trick or treat or pass out candy: Well, sadly, I’m back to the passing out candy phase. I do love seeing little kids in their costumes though. I just feel like walking around with my kids went by in a blink.
  • Chic decor or spooky decor: I prefer chic (cozy) decor to spooky. My kids wish I’d make our outside more spooky, I’m sure.
  • Candied apples or caramel apples: Caramel apples are so good…but too much work to eat. I love caramel apple suckers.
  • 13 nights of Halloween marathon or your own movies marathon: Make your own movie marathon, for sure. I wish we had more time for movie watching.
  • Early night or late night: Early night is my preference. Trick-or-treating is from 6-8 and on a school night…so hopefully we’ll all be in bed at a decent hour.

I guess since the kids are full on middle schoolers, our Halloweens definitely look different now {sad face}

I hope everyone has a great Halloween!
