Monthly Musings

Hey! Hey! I’m linking up with Holly for this month’s Monthly Musings post all about Summer Vacations & Staycations.

Top 5 Items to Pack:

  • Well, I can’t leave home without my Kindle or a book, so that’s the first thing that popped into my mind!
  • Workout bands. I try to at least workout a couple times while on vacation whether it’s a walk or using my workout bands.
  • Sunglasses. I need to have a pair or two on hand.
  • Face wash, Toner, Moisturizer. I try to keep up some kind of skin care routine even if I don’t do all the steps every morning and night while on vacation.
  • A hat. I always have a ball cap on hand or a beach hat if that’s where we are headed.

One more “must have”…

  • Melatonin – especially if I canโ€™t pack my weighted blanket ๐Ÿ˜‚
Pic from my Let’s Look (at what’s in your carry on bag.)

Packing Cubes. Yes or No?

Yes! Packing cubes are life changing for packing. I’ve been using these for a couple of years and love them. I use them to keep my items organized, but I also use them for the kids…especially if they share a suitcase. Besides helping with organization, they do condense what fits in the suitcase. I actually need to buy a few more as I only have two colors and I’d like to have a third for each person to have their own color. Trav is on his own when it comes to packing ๐Ÿ˜‰

Warm or Cold Destinations?

I’d probably have to say warm destinations, but that’s because most of our vacations are beach vacations. That being said, I love to visit the mountains in Asheville…especially in the fall when the weather is cooler.

Isle of Palm, SC

Favorite Vacation Destination of All Time:

San Diego/Del Mar is my favorite place to visit.

Lake Tahoe is a solid runner up!

Staycation Tips:

  • Learn to love where you live.
  • Try a new restaurant.
  • Hike at a park you usually wouldn’t go to.
  • Have a picnic.
  • Go for ice cream before dinner (which is something we sometimes do on vacation)

The kids and I visited McConnell Springs Park this summer which was a first for us.

Camping, Glamping, or Uh No?

Travis and I went camping in 2002. He was testing our relationship ๐Ÿ˜‚

Last fall, we went glamping in Asheville with our friends. Overall, we had a great time…but I still prefer a cabin in the woods with a cozy fire…and tv…and cell service! ๐Ÿ˜‰

How Many States Have You Been To?

I did a quick count, and I actually think I’ve been to 22 states? Of course, some I’m counting like Missouri where I’m from and Kansas where I visit family. One family vacation when I was in high school, we knocked out three states for one vacation: Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Also, places like Indiana, Ohio, and Tennessee are near Kentucky and we’ve visited for both day and overnight trips. We’ve been to California a few times, and then places like Florida and South Carolina many times.

Still…22 states blows my mind. Also, while we love the beach and going to places we know, I’m glad that we are purposeful with planning other trips for the kids like our Grand Canyon/AZ/California trip. We try to plan a spring break trip to visit somewhere new…It doesn’t always work out that way, but we try!

Have You Ever Traveled By RV?

I have not, but definitely think it could be a fun way to travel and see many parts of the United States.

Most Random Place You Have Been To?

This one stumps me…I can’t think of anything off the top of my head…

I keep asking myself, “Have I been to an alligator farm?” or “Have I seen the world’s biggest ball of paint?”

and those answers are “no” and “ball of paint is in Indiana.”

I need to branch out more, I guess!

Check out the highlighted tourist attraction in your state with the link below. ๐Ÿ˜‚

First Place to Travel to After Pandemic?

If I could hop in a plane and go anywhere at any time, it would be southern California. That being said, we were supposed to spend Spring Break 2020 in New York City with the kids, so that’s where I’d head first whenever it’s safe to travel and sight see.

Vacations are always fun to think about…and I actually love a good staycation too.

Thanks so much for reading! Don’t forget to check out Holly’s post as well as other bloggers’ posts who linked up as well.

See you back here tomorrow for What I’ve Been Reading: July.

What’s Up Wednesday

Y,all! My mind is blown. How in the world is July almost over?

I do feel like July flew by and now all eyes are on back to school…whatever that may look like!

Since it’s the last Wednesday of the month, I’m linking up with Sheaffer and Shay for this month’s What’s Up Wednesday post.

WHAT WE’RE EATING THIS WEEK:

  • Sunday: I made Bev’s Meatloaf in Tomato Sauce. It’s easy, hearty, and so delish! I paired that with Trader Joe’s Mushroom Risotto and watermelon.
  • Monday: Leftover meatloaf and bagged Ceasar salad.
  • Tuesday: Trader Joe’s carnitas with salsa verde. (I mentioned in my Trader Joe’s post that I put the carnitas and salsa in the slow cooker for a few hours for a delicious dinner. I eat the carnitas with a salad, or we do nachos or tacos). Trader Joe’s Street corn will be our side dish.
  • Wednesday: We will have carnitas leftovers and fruit for dinner.
  • Thursday: I’m making one of my favorite summer pastas. The Pinterest link doesn’t work anymore, but it’s as simple as cooking the pasta and then drizzling it with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and mixing it with the other ingredients. For a side, we’ll have roasted broccoli.
  • Friday and Saturday: Like most weekends, we’ll do carry out for dinner. #mamadontcookontheweekends

WHAT I’M REMINISCING ABOUT:

My Memory Lane post yesterday had me reminiscing about when I was a kid. It’s crazy to look at pics of me at the age my kids are now and wonder what they’ll think and remember about their childhood.

WHAT I’M LOVING:

I’m loving Haydenโ€™s new glasses. He’s been wearing these as well as his sports goggles. He looks like such a big kid!

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:

We’ve been checking appointments off our list (ortho, dental, vision and more).

The kids have been playing outside quite a bit as well as beating the summer heat at home.

Hayden has baseball a few days a week, and Hadley’s been taking dance workshop classes.

We’ve also been checking things off our “Summer Fun” list one thing at a time.

WHAT I’M DREADING:

I don’t know if “dread” is the word, but I am disappointed that we aren’t starting school in a normal fashion this year. I just hate it for my students who need to be at school and, of course, I hate it for my own kids. Itโ€™s the last year of elementary school for them as they will be 5th graders this year.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think they’d start their last first day of elementary school online. As a teacher and as a parent, I completely understand the decision. I just can’t believe we’ve been out of the school building for almost 5 months. I’m disappointed that our COVID numbers continue to rise, and we appear to be in a worse situation than when this all began.

Of course, I will have a good attitude about it though because I firmly believe that the kids are looking at us, as parents, and will respond accordingly. Hadley is bummed that this is how school is starting. Hayden seems pretty indifferent about it all. So, even within my own household, I have to choose my words carefully and react in a way that will be best for my kids.

I saw this recently on social media, and it certainly rings true.

WHAT I’M WORKING ON:

I’m working on getting organized for the school year. I buy a new lesson plan book every year. I always feel better once I get all the dates and my preps written in it. I always buy new colorful pens to brighten up the pages. I do love a planner and pens!

WHAT I’M EXCITED ABOUT:

Hadley starts back to her dance classes next week. They are going to use August to brush up on their recital routines and then have an in studio dance recital before starting the new semester of dance in September.

Hadley had dance recital pics yesterday. I always underestimate how long it takes to get a girl in tights, her hair up in a bun, and some blush on her cheeks! And…Hadley’s better at the hair and makeup part than I could ever be!

WHAT I’M WATCHING/READING:

I love the show The Rookie on ABC, I’m a big fan of Nathan Fillion. I’d fallen behind with watching it, so I’ve been getting caught up on it. I just have one more episode of the season left to watch.

Hayden and I started watching Alone on Netflix. This is apparently the sixth season, but I’m not sure how to see the other seasons. Ten contestants are placed in the Arctic wilderness to see if they can survive 100 days (I think?) and win $500,000. Each person films themselves, hunts the land for food, makes their own shelter, etc. Let me just go ahead and say that I would last 1/2 a day. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I don’t even think I could make coffee over a fire…and, I guess I’d first need to know how to start a fire!

I just finished reading Feels Like Falling and then started The Family Upstairs. I’m working on my What I’ve Been Reading (in July) post for Friday.

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO:

I usually only listen to podcasts when I walk, and I haven’t been walking as much lately. I still love Landyn’s podcast when I am out for a walk.

Also, as I type this post, I’m hearing silence! Both kids are outside playing ๐Ÿ™‚

WHAT I’M WEARING:

I’ve been loving my new sandals from Amazon. I’m sure before summer is over, I will get another pair in another color!

When we went to Walmart last week to pick up Hayden’s glasses, I saw these workout shorts. I’d been on the hunt for a black pair, and these have been a perfect fit. They are the Avia brand. I can’t seem to find them online, but they were only $12 in the store and remind me of Athleta or Lulu shorts. They do have a built in biker short which I didn’t realize until I got home, but I actually like that detail.

I also didn’t immediately find the exact workout tank I bought, but I bought one in coral and one in gray. They have a split hem and cover your bum if wearing leggings. The tanks were only $6.96 each. My tanks seem similar to these.

I’m also a sucker for pajama shorts! I’ve purchased a few mix and match Secret Treasures pajamas over the past couple of years from Walmart. I picked up this pair of shorts to add to my collection.

My Shop Style Your Senses bracelets arrived recently, and I’ve been wearing them on the regular.

WHAT I’M DOING THIS WEEKEND:

We don’t have too much planned. I’m sure we will lay low at home in between Hayden’s baseball games.

#30 up to bat!
My favorite pitcher!

WHAT I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT MONTH:

No matter what school looks like when we start, I will certainly treat my kids to our traditional Back to School breakfast.

Thanks so much for reading. Don’t forget to check out Sheaffer and Shay’s posts too!

I hope you are having a great week.

Memory Lane…

When we were in Kansas City a couple of weeks ago, my Gma was cleaning out her pics and had given some to my mom to sort through and keep what she wanted. Then, it was my turn to choose some pics to keep. I brought home about 25 pics, but thought I’d share a few faves.

On my Shutterfly app, I have various albums, and one of them is for old pics. I chose a couple of those to sprinkle in as well.

My kids get the biggest kick out of seeing these older pics. I do what I can to entertain them ๐Ÿ˜‰

Me:

I shared these two pics last week in my Friday Favorites post. I think the banana one is a fave pic of me for my Gma.

I’m assuming this is a pic of me around Christmastime. My love for Madeline ran deep. I carried that doll everywhere.

Listen. If you didn’t have your 5th birthday party at Show Biz Pizza, were you even a kid of the 80’s?

I clearly remember this Esprit shirt, how much I loved it, and how cool I felt in it. Also, let’s talk about the 80’s edition camcorder my mom is holding.

Brother & Sister:

There’s a three and a half year age difference between my brother and me. I used to pick on him, hit him, and pull his hair. I hated in the summer when he’d get a buzz cut to keep cool, and I could no longer get a good grip on his hair.

My parents always used to warn me that one day he’d be bigger than me…but I couldn’t really comprehend that as I figured I’d always be older than him. That being said, thankfully we started getting along once he did grow taller, bigger, and stronger than me!

My grandparents had a houseboat on the Lake of the Ozarks for most of my childhood. I have lots of great memories from the lake.

Pic on the left: we caught a fish!; Top right: I’m sure someone told us our face would freeze like that…and we were up for the challenge; Bottom right: tummy time..for the both of us, apparently.

Pic on the left: I’m guessing this is an Olan Mills photo from around 1984; Top right: tricycle fun at my grandparents’ house (and my brother with his binky!); Bottom right: Trip to DC in 2004. My mom had just retired and cashed in her sick days. She wanted to take a trip with my brother and me. I voted for the beach. I was outvoted, and we met up in DC.

Grandparents: โค๏ธ

I had really wonderful grandparents. I’m blessed to still have my Gma, and it’s been an ever greater blessing that Hayden and Hadley have great memories with her too!

We spent lots of time on the swing set at my grandparents’ house.

My grandpa was lots of fun! and yes-I’m sporting a perm.

I spent lots of time at my dad’s parents’ house too. Most mornings they’d drop me off there, and my grandma (Lulu) would take me to school. They had a fun backyard with swings, a garden, and in the summer, a little pool for us to splash around in. We’d often have Sunday family dinners there too with aunts, uncles, and cousins. Also, my grandpa worked for Pepsi, and they had a Pepsi pop machine out in their breezeway which was a dream come true for the grand kids. Lulu passed away when I was in the third grade, and my grandpa passed away when I was in the seventh grade. I’m very thankful to have great memories of them.

I would often spend sick days at my Gma’s house. My mom’s school was close to their house, and my mom would drop me off there if I needed to stay home. I remember watching I Love Lucy while eating cinnamon sugar toast and scrambled eggs on the couch during those sick days.

My grandpa was very funny. He’d always tell jokes and tickle us. We’d go to their country club and swim or hit golf balls. He always said, “I always knew I’d marry the right woman. I just didn’t know her first name would be always.” haha. He had tons of jokes like that. He passed away in 2004 right after I got engaged and right before my move to Kentucky. I’m very thankful he was able to meet Travis! Of course, I wish my three grandparents could have met Hayden and Hadley…what a gift that would have been.

Pic on left: Swinging with Lulu; Top right: Gma driving a boat at the lake; Bottom right: Grandpa was a Tigers fan…really, he was a fan of anything we did.

Other Faves:

Lake time with mom, my brother, and my Gma.

The house I grew up in had a huge front yard hill that was perfect for those Midwest winters. We’d sled down the hill, across the street, and into the neighbor’s yard.

Top pic: Sledding with my mom, brother, and dog Maggie.

Bottom pic: Classic leaving the hospital pic….my mom carrying my brother, my dad with his bell bottoms and pipe (probably telling me to get in the car!), and me with my boy haircut and Madeline doll.

This is probably Christmas 2002 or 2003. Whatever year it was, I think it was Trav’s first Christmas with my family. We always do Christmas Eve with my dad’s side of the family and Christmas evening with my mom’s side of the family. This pic is at my Gma’s house.

So, that’s a little trip down memory lane. I guess I get my love for taking pics honestly which is obviously easier to do in 2020 with an iPhone in my hand all of the time.

Time sure does fly by!

I hope you have a great day! See you back here tomorrow for this month’s What’s Up Wednesday post. (Also, how is July almost over?!?)

Trader Joeโ€™s Lately

Hello and Happy Monday! How was your weekend?

Friday night, Hayden and I watched the KC Royals Opening Day game together, and we tried carry out from a new (to us) place. It’s a sushi and hibachi place, and the food was great!

Saturday, we spent most of the day at home, and I even had some time to sit in the pool for about an hour and read. Then, Hayden had a baseball game. Theyโ€™ve had a great season so far, and keep getting better. His team played the best that they have this season, and they won! It was a hot Saturday afternoon, but fun watching them play. Hayden pitched the last inning and a half and did great. Saturday evening, we got carry out again. (I don’t cook on the weekends!) Then, we started watching Alone on Netflix. It’s kind of like Survivor and pretty interesting!

On Sunday, we didn’t have much going on which was very much needed! I finished the book I was reading, picked up groceries, did laundry, and prepped for the week ahead.

Anyway, I did a Trader Joe’s run recently, and I thought I’d share what I brought home. I go to TJ every other week or so. Sometimes, I will go in between those hauls to just pop in for flowers or something only Trader Joe’s has…but I usually pick up quite a few things on my hauls…some new items and some tried and true faves.

Flowers:

Yโ€™all, Trader Joe’s has the best flowers. I always pick up a bouquet or two and put the flowers in a big vase for the sunroom. Then, I usually put some in smaller mason jars here and there around the house.

Dinner Idea:

We are having this for dinner Tuesday and Wednesday nights this week. Just put the carnitas and salsa verde in the slower cooker for 4 hours, shred the meat and enjoy! I sometimes put it on half of the Southwestern Chopped Salad, especially if I’m trying to eat low carb. The kids and Travis usually put the carnitas and toppings on tortillas or taco shells. I often serve this with Trader Joe’s Mexican Style Roasted Corn (street corn)…which is another TJ fave. We can usually get two nights out of this dinner.

Snacks:

The corn chips are perfect with the Buffalo Chicken Dip. I ALWAYS buy the Havarti Dill Cheese. I love it so much! The kids love the mozzarella sticks for snack or even for lunch some days. I picked up these crackers for the first time to eat with the hummus I also picked up.

Hayden always requests Chomps, and Hadley loves the Fruit Wraps. I LOVE the Perfect Bars. The peanut butter one is my fave. They are pretty high cal for a snack, so I usually split it in half for a sweet treat over two afternoons.

Sides:

I usually pick up a couple bags of risotto and one or two of their different kinds of frozen gnocchi. They are perfect to heat up quickly as a side for dinner!

Dips & Dressing:

I’ve been buying the Buffalo Chicken Dip for a few months. It’s perfect with raw veggies (peppers are my fave) or the corn chips. The Dill Pickle Hummus is a new find for me. I love it. Like I said above, I eat it with the crackers as a part of my lunch or as a snack. I’m sure it’s good with raw veggies too.

I made California Roll Bowls the other night for dinner, and this Carrot Ginger Miso Dressing is perfect on top.

Lunch Ideas:

This is the second time I’ve picked up these Gyro Slices. It’s also the second time I’ve forgotten to pick up pitas! So, I tend to eat these a few slices at a time just on their own.

I love Alouette spreadable cheese from Kroger (not TJ). A few weeks ago, I spotted this cucumber and dill flavor and love it! It was perfect timing because I put a bit of it on the gyro slices, and they are the perfect combo.

I’ve mentioned before that I love summer lunches (and, I guess pandemic lunches) because I have time to cook lunch items. The kids love all of these options below (I do too!). Hadley is the one that mostly eats the mac & cheese, but even Hayden loves it.

Hadley and I usually split the black bean burrito, but Sis could eat her weight in black beans, so sometimes she claims it as all hers! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Desserts:

My sweet tooth is sometimes hard to control, so I only picked up a few desserts this time. Honestly, Trader Joe’s has the best dessert and little sweet options around.

I always pick up the molasses cookies. Always. (We’ve learned our lesson and put them up high now…ever since Homer ate half a box of them a few months ago!) Those cookies are definitely a family favorite.

I’ve seen people share about the Brownie Crisp Coffee Ice Cream Sandwiches, so I picked them up this time. I actually got two boxes. Good news is that only Travis and I like them. The ice cream is definitely coffee flavored, so I don’t have to worry about the kids swooping in and eating them all! They are only 140 calories each, and filling enough for a dessert.

This is the first time I’ve picked up the lemon cake mix. I made it yesterday for our Sunday dessert, and it was a hit! It’s very refreshing and a great summer dessert option.

A slice of lemon cake for dessert was a perfect way to end the weekend.

What are some of your favorite Trader Joe’s items?? I don’t know that I’ve ever been disappointed in anything I’ve purchased from good ole TJ!

I hope you have a great week.

Friday Favorites {#33}

Hello and Happy Friday, y’all! This week was certainly filled with end of the summer stuff like appointments, back to school planning, professional development and more!

As always, I’m linking up with Erika and Andrea for this week’s Friday Favorites post.

Favorite Moment:

There were a few favorite moments this week, but I will share the first two that popped into my mind.

1.

The kids had their annual vision exam on Monday. Hadley passed again, but Hayden’s prescription changed (again).

He’s been wearing glasses for two years now, and each exam provides an adjustment for his prescription. I had a feeling his eyesight was really worsening (it runs in the family) based on some extra squinting recently, and he’d even mentioned having trouble when up to bat seeing the pitcher release the ball.

Anyway, as the doctor was tweaking his prescription (you know–when they ask, “which looks better, 1 or 2?”) Hayden said, “2.” She then flipped the screen and said, โ€œThis is your old prescription.โ€ She then flipped the screen again and said, โ€œThis is your new prescription.โ€ Hayden quietly and sweetly said, โ€œOhhh!โ€ It was a sweet moment…almost like he was relieved. It must have been so much better! ๐Ÿ˜‚

The first year he had glasses he had eye glasses and sports goggles. He really did wear both, but around six months, he just stuck with the goggles. So, last year, with the new prescription, we only purchased new sports goggles. I think he likes that they are heavier on his face and have the strap. Anyway, this year he said he wanted both again. He kind of had to wander around on his own due to COVID restrictions, but chose four very similar styles to what he had a couple of years ago. The pair he ended up choosing (pictured below) remind me of Squints from Sandlot! So cute. They’ll be ready next week.

And…how weird is 2020?!…trying on glasses while wearing a mask!

2.

Hayden’s finishing up Goblet of Fire, and sometimes asks to read aloud to me. He did so the other night, and I kept dozing off. He stopped, woke me up, and said, “What?! Are you not enjoying this?!” ๐Ÿ˜‚

Favorite Kid Quote:

Honestly, the two Hayden instances above were favorite quotes, but I couldn’t stop laughing during Hadley’s eye exam when he saw the numbers in the corner (20, 30, 40, etc) and asked me if the number was Hadley’s IQ!!

Then…

Later that day, I asked Hadley if she had a hair tie for her hair. Without missing a beat, she said, โ€œI have seven!โ€ She tends to wear them on her wrists and ankles (sometimes!) She’s definitely a Girl Scout…always prepared!

Favorite Food:

My new favorite food…or should I say… favorite guilty pleasure is this Cheesecake Factory ice cream.

My dad told me about it a couple of months ago, but our Kroger didn’t have it. When we were in KC last week, he bought a variety of flavors for us to try. Then, I looked at the Kroger app, and Kroger now carries this brand! When I went to the store on Monday, I brought home original, salted caramel, and cookies and cream. My fave is the original.

Favorite Thought:

I saw this on Instagram. It was such a good reminder on the importance of taking care of yourself!

Favorite Clothing Item:

Hadley had been wanting a pair of Birkenstock-like sandals (I refuse to buy her the real deal until her feet stop growing—she’s gone from a women’s size 5 to size 7 in a year!) all summer. Target has some that are similar, but they are never at the store, and for some reason her size isn’t available to ship.

I’m not sure why it took me so long to check Amazon, but they had what she was looking for. She got this pair in white.

I’d seen this pair before and thought they would be good for summer and going to the pool, and they just seem like a great summer sandal that’s easy to wear.

I bought my usual size 9 but think a 10 would be better… that size should arrive today. Hadley’s 7.5 fit her just fine!

Other Faves:

Sipping coffee out of my new mug from my mom. Go Chiefs! #superbowlchamps

While it has been hot, the evenings have provided a decent temperature to go for a walk.

Favorite Mom Meme(s):

I’ve got one serious and one funny meme for you!

This one below is the motherhood truth. Real talk: Monday was rough with my kids…we were busy, we were tired, we had appointments, we had practices, we had no groceries, we had to pick up groceries and on and on. I went to bed Monday night feeling like a bad mom.

But…the rest of the week was much better—even if I had to send a kid to their room a time or two!

And…something funny for you! You know I love my Golden Girls…and I love to sleep…even if it’s not always soundly!

Bonus Fave: Flashback Friday:

My Gma and mom were cleaning out pics, so I came back with quite a few gems for myself to keep. Including this one…

The banana pic is a fave of my Gma’s. I think she even had it framed at her house for quite a few years.

I’m guessing this was 1982-83 (ish)…

Weekly Recap :

Here are this week’s posts if you are interested and/or missed one!

If you take away anything from today’s post (besides how cute I was in the early 80’s!), you must buy the Cheesecake Factory ice cream! ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks so much for reading! Don’t forget to check out the other ladies’ posts too!

I hope you have a great weekend.

Family Fun: Games

We were really on a roll playing games as a family in March and April. Then, I guess we kind of got burned out. Recently, we’ve added a few more games to the mix, and I took all of these to KC with us because I knew we’d have the downtime to play.

Presidents Game

Hayden has had this game for some time, but we’d never played it. There are lots of Professor Noggin’s learning games.

It’s definitely a quick game and great for learning.

A little info: It says this game is for ages 7+ and 2+ players are needed for the game.

There are 30 illustrated cards with “easy” and “hard” questions.

Before you begin, you decide which level you will play and then roll the die. The person who rolled the die asks the player on their right that number question. If the person answers correctly, they keep the card. If they don’t answer it correctly, the answer is shared and the card goes to the bottom of the stack.

Then, the person who just answered, rolls the die, asks the player on their right the question and so on.

Once all the cards are gone, everyone counts the number of cards they have. Whoever has the most cards wins!

It’s as easy as that.

Uno

I think everyone knows how to play Uno ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s the game that I usually throw in my purse if I know we’ll have time to kill.

Uno is for ages 7+ and 2-10 players can participate.

We do love this game as a family because it takes some time to play but not too much time. Also, just when someone yells “Uno,” they usually have to draw more cards. haha

Qwixx

Andrea shared about this game in the spring. I purchased it, and we played it a few times. Then…it got #Homered. I ordered another set, and it’s one we all enjoy.

It’s a “fast family dice game” for ages 8+ and you need 2-5 players.

This game does have strategy involved and can take a few rounds to fully understand. The object of the game is to score the most points by crossing out as many numbers in the four color rows as possible without getting penalty points.

One of the main rules is that numbers have to be crossed off left to right in each of the color rows. If you skip a number, it can’t be crossed out later.

You can also lock a row by crossing out five numbers in that row. Then, that color die is removed from the game.

When the game is over, players add up their score to determine the winner.

Monopoly Deal

Monopoly Deal has definitely become a family favorite. Andrea shared it recently as well, and I purchased it before the KC trip to add to our game collection.

The game says, “Play in 15 minutes,” but we were never that quick! That being said, each game we played took about 30 minutes which is much quicker than the board game.

It’s a game for ages 8+ and you need 2-5 players.

When I bought it, I thought the kids could play it in the car…but that’s not the case. You want to have as many cards laid out on the table, so you can play them. You can’t play cards from your hand…only the ones you’ve put on the table.

There are three kinds of cards: money cards, property cards, and action cards.

Each player gets 5 cards. When it’s their turn, they draw two cards from the middle pile and can then play up to 3 cards. So, you could lay down a money card in case you need to pay someone, lay down a property card to start building on, and tell the other players an action like swap a property, pay you because it’s your birthday, etc.

Another rule is that players can never have more than seven cards in their hand.

The first player to collect 3 full property sets of different colors wins.

The instructions actually say, “Start playing and all will become clear.” That proved to be true ๐Ÿ˜‰ We figured it out as we played, and it’s definitely a favorite game now.

What are some of your favorite games to play? I even love Solitaire (with cards! No my phone!) when no one wants to play a game with me!

I hope you are having a great week.

Road trip to KC

Last week we hit the road to visit family in Kansas City. I’m from KC (hence part of my blog name…I’m from the “Show Me” state ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), and try to get back there at least a couple times a year.

Obviously, with the world turned upside down, I hadn’t seen family in a while. I had to adjust our dates a few times and wanted to make sure to take as safe of a trip as possible, so we headed out last Wednesday and came back on Sunday.

With a few stops, KC is about a 9 hour drive from Lexington. We made great time on both legs of the trip, only stopping quickly for gas and restroom break if needed.

I mentioned this earlier in the week, but this trip reminded me that traveling with kids does get easier! I made a list for each kid for their suitcase and backpacks, and they packed themselves! I double checked a few things, but they had it all. Also, I felt less stressed packing this time (I just hate packing…and unpacking) because I knew we were just going to lounge around! Comfy clothes, workout clothes and pjs were all that I needed.

We arrived Wednesday afternoon and stopped at my dad’s house first. The kids played outside, and my dad helped Hayden with his golf swing. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Then, we made our way to my mom’s house. The kids were excited to continue their dog walking biz by walking her dog Gus. They walked him twice a day most days.

It’s summer. It’s July. It’s hot everywhere, but KC brings the heat. Travis and I were married in KC in June 2005…when the heat index was pushing 110. So this heat index of 106 was something I’m all too familiar with.

Two days of our trip, Travis took the kids to a nearby golf course so they could hit balls on the driving range…and “drive” the golf cart.

Look out!

Friday morning Travis and I went on a walk on a trail close to my momโ€™s house. We didn’t start our walk until after 10:00, and it was already so hot. We chose the trail, so we’d at least get a little shade!

Friday afternoon, one of my mom’s friends graciously let us cool off in his pool! It’s always good to see him and his wife…and the pool is a great way for the kids to cool off and burn some energy.

Gus got lots of snuggles.

I’ve mentioned before that Hayden has been reading the Harry Potter series. My mom has all the books, so she was saving them for when the kids would be interested in reading them. Hayden has read the first three books, so he started with the fourth book, Goblet of Fire, once GG gave him the set.

He even stayed up later than the rest of us on Wednesday night to start the book.

Sunday, on the drive home, Hayden read 90% of the time! He was really loving that book.

Throughout our stay, we played quite a few games. Monopoly Deal was a favorite. It took a couple of rounds to get used to, but we enjoyed it…and it’s definitely easier to pack and shorter to play than the Monopoly board game.

We also played Battleship that my mom had and then Dominoes at my grandma’s house.

Missouri has my favorite convenience store…Quik Trip. (It’s the little things that make you miss home, right? ;))They are always so clean and the employees are known for ringing you up as quickly as possible.

Sometimes we stop at QT on our way in or out of town, but Saturday, we picked up drinks for everyone as well as tacos from Taco John’s which are a fave of Trav’s when we visit.

When we are in KC, we usually hit up other local faves like Topsys for their popcorn and cherry limeade, Winsteads for a burger and shake, and of course, KC BBQ. This trip, we didn’t eat out as much just to be on the safe side.

On Saturday, we celebrated my Gma’s birthday. I ordered her a flower pot from the same Etsy shop that I purchased end of the school year gifts for the kids’ teachers.

Saturday night, we played more Dominoes before lasagna dinner and cookie cake at Gma’s house.

dinner at Gma’s

Then, it was time to pack up on Saturday night to head out Sunday morning.

It was a great visit, and we got to spend lots of time with our family.

Of course, it’s always sad to leave (and as the kids get older, they definitely do miss seeing family that’s far away), but it’s also good to get back home to Homer and sleep in our own beds.

Until next time, KC…

I hope you are having a great week.

Tuesday Talk about Twins

Hello! I’m linking up with Erika and Ashley for their monthly Tuesday Talk link up. For Tuesday Talk, the topic is whatever you’d like to chat about. So I thought I’d chat about a topic that I’m asked about often…what it’s like to have twins.

I’m often asked, “What’s it like to have twins?” My response is often, “Well, I don’t know any differently.” It’s not like I had one kid and then twins. We came out of the parenting gate having two at once! I can also definitely say that it’s a blur of blessings.

Do you know what the second most asked question I get about twins is? “Are they identical or fraternal?” This one always shocks me as boy/girl twins would most obviously be fraternal. I just allows reply politely with, “fraternal.”

A little back story…

Since I struggled to get pregnant, we learned very early on that we were having twins because I had multiple appointments with my fertility specialist. I had taken an at home test and it was negative. A couple of weeks later, I took one again, and it was positive. Blood work confirmed I was pregnant, and when the nurse called, she said, “Your numbers are very, very, very good.” I didn’t think much about it….I was just happy to be pregnant. She then scheduled my ultrasound.

We arrived at the doctor the next week only to realize my appointment was for the following week. I guess I was too excited to keep the dates straight! When the doctor entered the room, he said, “Let’s look for twins!” Travis and I both just thought “haha” but as soon as we looked at the screen, I could clearly see two sacs. Since I was only 6 weeks, only “baby A” had a heartbeat. The doctor told us not to worry, and we scheduled the next appointment. Of course, we left in shock, but we were so excited.

At least we had plenty of time to get used to the idea of twins!

We kept everything quiet for a few weeks until my next appointment when both “baby A” and “baby B” had heartbeats. I still saw my fertility doctor for a couple more appointments before he released me to my regular OBGYN.

I saw my OB and a high risk doctor for the rest of the pregnancy. I had an ultrasound at almost every appointment, so we got to see the twins often. At my 14 week appointment, we found out “baby A” was a boy and “baby B” was a girl!

Throughout the pregnancy, there were definitely some ups and downs…sometimes the high risk doctor provided too much info. We had a little scare with Hayden and then Hadley consistently measured smaller than Hayden, but not so much that I really needed bed rest. My water broke at exactly 36 weeks, and they were born on November 20, 2009. Hayden weighed 4 lb 7 oz and Hadley weighed 4 lbs. Hayden came home with us after four days in the hospital. Hadley was in the NICU for 13 days.

I feel like I could write a whole blog post just on leaving the hospital with one baby and having Hadley in the NICU, so I will save all that for a later date. Although I was sad to leave her, I knew she was in great hands, and leaving with just Hayden was also such an overwhelming feeling.

I’m a teacher, and all about the gradual release model of teaching ๐Ÿ˜‰The hospital let me leave with one baby, and I brought home the other one about ten days later. We eased into parenting two kids at once!

December 3, 2009. Reunited with Hadley

Life when they were little:

One thing we didn’t prepare for was how small they’d be. I’ve known/have friends and family members who have twins, and just never thought at 36 weeks that mine would be so small. Of course, we had their room ready, clothes washed and put up, bottles ready to go, etc…but no preemie clothes. The hospital, as well as friends and family, helped us with that situation.

My type A/planner personality was a strength during this time. My kids were on a schedule starting the first day. Really, the hospital put them on a schedule, and I didn’t deviate from it by even five minutes. Time to eat, time to sleep, tummy time, etc. When you have two kids at once, you don’t really feel in control. A schedule helped make me feel in control. Also, the kids slept 8 hours at night by 12 weeks, so the schedule really worked out for us and for them.

When they were first home, they were so small, they both slept in our room in a pack-n-play until they slept through the night. Then, they shared a room. We had pretty big bedrooms in our previous home, so they each had a crib but shared a room. They even slept in the same crib until they were six months old. I guess I just hated the thought of separating them. They shared a room until they were 3 1/2 years old.

Maternity leave was hard. I planned on taking off 16 weeks or so, and around week 10, I called Travis on a Friday and said I wanted to go back to school on Monday. He talked me out of it just saying once I go back, I can’t get my sick/maternity leave back….and that it would be better when they slept through the night. I had called him that day at work because Hadley wouldn’t quit crying. He met me at the doctor. When the pediatrician asked what was going on, I simply said, “I need her to be like him.” Hayden was sleeping peacefully in his carrier while Hadley continued to cry. She had colic and acid reflux…thankfully, that passed after a couple of months.

Let’s just say while pushing that double stroller down the Kroger aisle, I received many, “bless your hearts,” from people ๐Ÿ˜‰

Similar but different:

My kids have been different from day one. When the NICU nurse handed Hadley over to us, she said that girls tend to be more feisty and self-sufficient. Of course, she had to fend for herself a bit those first few weeks while Hayden was doted on. So, if you ever saw five-year-old Hadley tie Hayden’s cleats in the middle of a soccer field, then you know what I mean!๐Ÿ˜‚

Hayden is quiet, introverted, and inquisitive. He can be a bit inflexible (wonder who he gets that from?) BUT he’s more resilient than he realizes. He’s had to overcome and continues to work on some struggles and obstacles which has shown him, that at his core, he’s tougher than he realizes.

Hayden, like me, eases into social settings and situations. He also takes some time to wake up in the morning and needs to wind down at night. Again, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Hadley has always been out-going, inclusive, intuitive, and fearless. She’s exactly the kind of daughter my personality needs. Because I am pretty quiet, she pulls the conversation out of me with her questions or just willingness to chat.

She hits the ground running and doesn’t stop until it’s time for bed. Then, she passes right out for the night until it’s time to start the next day.

Also, of note: Travis and I each have our own mini me. The first thing I noticed about Hayden when the nurse showed him to me was his nose. I said, “Travis! He has your nose.” (which is cute). When people tell me how much Hadley looks like me, I always say, “Well, unfortunately, she acts like me too!” ๐Ÿ˜‚

A few FAVE pics…

through the years…

Education:

When they were little, they went to a sitter’s house. So, they were together all day, every day. Hadley would dominate over his personality, and it got to the point where Hayden would defer to her. I’d ask what they had for lunch, and he’d say, “Hadley, you tell mom!”

The year before kindergarten, we put them in preschool two days a week. We thought it would be a good time to see how they would do on their own in separate classes. They thrived. Hayden needed his own space…and so did she! Of course, on the first day of school, she walked in like she owned the place. He was certainly more timid. It all worked out though as they navigated that new world on their own.

All throughout elementary, they’ve been in different classes, per our request. They’ve ended up in the same math group with the same teacher a time or two, and that’s been fine for them.

I’ve learned that I need to let them be who they are, and I need to let them fail and learn.

I’ve had to shift my thinking…just because something comes easily to one, it may not come easily to the other.

And, of course, they hit some of those beginning milestones at different times, so I had to remind myself not to compare them. For example, Hadley talked before Hayden did, but he walked before she did.

They balance each other out perfectly.

It’s nice when it works out that they both excel at something. For example, Hadley was the top 25th runner in the 4th grade girls division for cross country. Hayden was 26th in the boys division at state! There were races where they both even finished in the same place! Also, both won awards for their science fair projects, so there was no rivalry there ๐Ÿ˜‰

It’s convenient (for me) to see one school performance, or sign up to help with one time slot of field day to see their grade level.

Interests:

In the beginning, I kept them on the same teams for baseball, basketball, and soccer. This was when they were 4-6 years old or so. Then, it was time for them branch out. She didn’t want to play soccer and tried dance. One year they both did Academic Team at school, and last year, only Hadley did it. She was so excited to stay after school for chorus last year, but he wanted no part in that!

Spring soccer 2013

Of course, it keeps my schedule easier when they are at the same place at the same time, but that’s not fair to them. So they’ve been able to make more choices as the years have gone on.

He loves to read, draw and play sports. She loves to bake, craft, and hang out with friends.

Also, at this age, they have the same friend group but Hadley mostly sticks to playing with her girlfriends and Hayden with his friends. BUT…will you see Hadley mixing it up with the boys even when she’s the only girl? YES!

Will you see Hayden hanging out with Hadley and her friends if he’s on his own? Heck to the NO! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Other thoughts:

I donโ€™t dwell on it but Iโ€™m cognizant of the fact that I only get one shot at most of these milestones. I always say I was blessed to have two at once, but that does mean only one first day of kindergarten, one fifth grade graduation for the both of them, (and on and on)…

Even though we struggled to get pregnant, I didnโ€™t know at the time that I wouldnโ€™t get to rock a baby again, so I probably took those little things for granted thinking I’d get to do that again. (Of course, I have friends with one child who are in the same situation with only experiencing milestones once…so I am very grateful to have the both of them getting to experience those things together.)

Whether they know it or not, they have a built in best friend. I joke that I “front loaded” some of my parenting responsibilities at the beginning. Once they were old enough to play together, I actually did get back some of that time for myself to tidy up the house or make a grocery list.

I feel like I just rambled in this post…and I didn’t expect the post to be so wordy! Sorry for that!

The bottom line about having twins is that it’s a blessing I didn’t know that I needed or that I deserved. After struggling to have one…we had two. I’m thankful for that each and every day.

As the parent of twins, I try to carve out time for each of them, I try not to compare them, and I certainly try to let them be their own person with their own interests.

Having twins for kids is certainly special, but like all parents, I’m amazed at how time is literally flying by. Whether you have one kid or four, I’m sure you blink and wonder how they are already starting school, or driving a car, or graduating! Being a parent is certainly a privilege and an honor!

Oh there always is one more question that I get asked…

“Do they fight?” …YES! ๐Ÿ˜‰

July Monday Memes

Hi! How was your weekend? We actually just got back from visiting my family in KC. I hadn’t seen my Gma since Thanksgiving, my mom since early February, and my dad since mid-March (right before everything shut down). Anyway, this road trip was the best yet. I’m reminded that travelling does get easier as the kids get older.

That being said, it’s back to reality which means laundry, grocery pick up, appointments and more. So, I thought I’d keep this post short, sweet and funny….with some of my favorite memes that I’ve seen this month.

1.

This! I canโ€™t wait for the day when things are back to โ€œnormal.โ€

2.

This actually popped up as something I shared a few years ago on Facebook.

July is bringing the heat for sure…especially in KC. On Saturday, the heat index was 103! Thankfully, my momโ€™s friend let us swim in his pool for a couple of hours!

3.

One thing I have embraced during this time is realizing I donโ€™t need to go to all the places all of the time.

4.

This could definitely count as a โ€œmom meme.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚Although, Iโ€™ve always been one to turn down my radio so I could think ๐Ÿ˜‚

5.

I donโ€™t even like to jog in place during a workout. Feet need to stay on the ground!

6.

Iโ€™ve admitted Iโ€™m not much of a talker on the phone. This meme is definitely for me…but mostly for phone calls that are more business, not personal.

7.

Amazon for the win, yโ€™all! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Hopefully, these memes provided a laugh or two.

Today is filled with unpacking, getting caught up on school emails, taking the kids for their yearly eye exams, & calling for an unexpected ortho appointment…Haydenโ€™s appliance needs fixed I think.

I hope you have a great week.

Friday Favorites {#32}

Hey. Hey. Happy Friday.

This week was a mix of crossing things off my “to do” list, working on school stuff, running a few errands, going to Hayden’s baseball games and much more.

We’re glad it’s almost the weekend.

As always, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites post.

Favorite Moment:

Definitely a favorite moment this week has been seeing some of my family that we haven’t seen in months. It’s been good for all of us.

Favorite Kid Quote:

Wednesday, 8:30 am in the Starbucks Drive-thru: Hadley said she would like a hot chocolate. I looked at her kind of surprised since it was 85 degrees outside, and she said, โ€œWell, I doubt youโ€™ll let me get a vanilla bean Frappuccino in the morning, right?โ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚ Good point.

Favorite Homer Pic:

Homer often hops up on the stool in the kitchen. It’s like he’s bellying up to the bar. He’s so funny.

Favorite Clothing Item:

These pjs I purchased from Amazon are definitely a fave. They are lightweight, comfy, and perfect for summer! I got the “galaxy” color/style.

Speaking of tie dye, Hadley is embracing this style too. She tie dyed a t-shirt with a friend recently, and even tie dyed a pair of socks too. I’m not sure about the socks and sandals looks, but “you do you, girl!”

Favorite Book:

I finished Our Little Lies the other day. My library didn’t have it, so I purchased it from Amazon for my Kindle. I try not to buy Kindle books often, and when I do, they are less than $5. This one was $2.99 and worth every penny. Definitely a great read.

Favorite Mom Meme:

I love to cook…but I struggle with cooking motivation in the summer. This meme definitely applies to me!

Bonus Favorite: Flashback Friday

Facebook continues to bring some favorite gems in “memories.”

This pic is from July 2010. We’d visited family in KC and made it just outside of St. Louis during our car ride back to Lexington. The kids were eight months old and kind of fussy….so we got a hotel room for the night. They were so cute sitting up in the bed with their pacis. The Run DMC onsie was a gift from my brother and one of my favorites.

Then, this pic is from July 2011 when we were in South Carolina. It was the kids first time at the beach. Such a sweet pic. They definitely don’t hold hands anymore!

Weekly Recap

That’s a wrap on this week’s faves. Don’t forget to check out the other ladies’ posts too!

Have a great weekend.
