Hello there!

I hope you had a great weekend. Memorial Day always kicks off summer, but it’s an important time to remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

Memorial Day

It’s been a minute since I’ve shared a post, but today I’m getting caught up!

I’m sharing a bit of Life…lately.

A couple of weeks ago, Hadley attended a friend’s bat mitzvah, and looked so grown up!

She borrowed a dress from a friend, and then we ordered these cute shoes from Amazon. The outfit came together nicely. She had a great time with her friends.

We also had Youth Sunday at church. The kids all looked so grown up. Hayden handed out the bulletins and Hadley helped with offering.

It’s peony season at Trader Joe’s which I love!

Of course, we’ve had lots of sporting events including a recent CATS game. Travis took them, and Hadley sent me this photo. They had a great time.

Hayden was excited to get his baseball signed by a few players.

Then, we also watched my school’s baseball team the regional tournament.

We celebrated the last day of school. 6th grade seemed to fly by!

On Friday night, we went to see Top Gun Maverick.

It was SO good. I don’t know the last time I enjoyed a movie so much. I loved the nods to the first one, and we were on the edge of our seats with the action. The kids enjoyed it too.

They’ve been busy finishing up track season.

Two weekends ago they ran in a race just to get in more practice and work in speed. Then, this past Saturday, they ran in the state meet.

Both were in the 4×800 relay, but then Hadley got moved up from alternate to run the 4×400. So, Hadley ran in the first and last race of the meet. 😂 At least the weather was beautiful.

Anyway, they both did their part in they relays and ended on a high note for the season.

…and it’s officially summer. Of course, Memorial Day weekend is the most crowded, but we all went to the pool on Sunday and I had a skinny marg to kick off summer.

The kids spent a few hours there yesterday too, but I had a hair appointment and a few other errands like going to Trader Joe’s. Travis and I watched an episode of Ozark before grilling out for dinner.

With summer, I will still blog but it may be bit less…I will just see where the days take me…

Later this week, I will share the books I read in May and some Friday Favorites.

School’s Out…for the Summer

It’s official…

Yesterday, I shared the end of the school year 6th grade interview, and today I’m sharing the last day of school photos.

When your mom is a teacher…

It’s probably both a blessing and a curse to have a mom as a teacher. When the year started, I wasn’t sure what to expect in regards to communication with teachers and classwork. Their school has two teams for each grade, and my kids were on the same team. The lead teacher sent daily emails with activities, assignments, and due dates. It was so nice because they had the same teachers which meant the same assignments and due dates. I got the notifications on assignments and grades. If an assignment was flagged missing, I definitely let my kids know.

This year, I really tried to help the kids stay organized and plan their time wisely. I encouraged them to talk to their teachers, ask questions, and advocate for themselves. Bless Hadley’s heart. Every year she wants all the colored pens, sticky notes, and cute folders that Target has to offer. While she does tend to stay pretty organized, some of that falls to the wayside as a school year continues. Hayden subscribes to “shove everything in my backpack even though I have folders and binders” method of organization. Aye yai yai!

While sometimes I felt like we had to talk with them a bit too much about expectations, I also know that if we didn’t teach them these skills, then who would?

In the teaching world, we use “gradual release model” as best practice with our students. This year felt a lot like “I do” (in regards to teaching expectations and academic habits) and now we will work towards “we do” and “you do” in 7th and 8th grades. 😉I’m hoping some of these habits will roll into next year, and the kids will know how to manage their time, study, and meet deadlines with less help from Travis or myself.

The kids learned so much this year. It’s a big transition moving from elementary school with one teacher to having 8 classes in a day. Also, with 8 different teachers come a variety of expectations and procedures. They ended the first quarter at home for two weeks with Covid. That being said, both kids made the Honor Roll every quarter and their grades continued to improve throughout the year. The kids are both pretty well-rounded, and with the transition to middle school and as active as they are, I will take it.

Middle school can be a really difficult time for kids. I continue to be thankful for the community of people that it takes to keep my kids headed in the right direction. From teachers to coaches to family and parents of friends, it definitely takes a village, and I appreciate everyone’s help!

I’m going to take a few blogging days off as I finish up the odds and ends of the school year and just take a moment to decompress from the weight of the world right now.

End of the School Year Interview: 6th Grade

and the last lunch of the year is packed 😅

This year really did go by so quickly! Maybe it was because it was a “normal” year after a year and a half of non-traditional instruction. The kids really did have a great first year of middle school.

I tweaked the questions that I’ve asked them in the past in order to include a few specific middle school questions.

Hayden’s Thoughts:

  • What was the best part of this year? Meeting new people
  • Who was your favorite teacher? my Language Arts and PE teachers
  • What was your favorite thing to learn about this year? In Health, we learned about fitness.

  • What is something hard you did? Math

  • What was something fun that you did at school this year? Going outside during class
  • What is one word you would use to describe this school year? Chaotic
  • What was your favorite school activity and why? Being with my teammates in basketball and track
  • What is one thing you enjoy about middle school? Having more freedom

Mom’s Thoughts:

  • I’m proud of you because you persevered through obstacles and never gave up.
  • One of my favorite memories of you this year was: watching you run.
  • It’s been fun to watch you: grow as a learner and as an athlete.
  • Three things I love about you: your tenacity, your inquisitiveness, and your quiet leadership abilities.
  • You strengthened our family by: becoming more responsible and taking ownership in your learning and training.

Hadley’s Thoughts:

  • What is one word you would use to describe this school year? A learning experience (more than one word…but relatable ;))
  • What was your favorite school activity and why? Ice cream party for track because our hard work paid off.
  • What is one thing you enjoy about middle school? Having eight different teachers during the day.

Mom’s Thoughts:

  • I’m proud of you because…you stayed true to yourself but also blossomed in a new school environment.
  • One of my favorite memories of you this year was: watching you dance and run.
  • It’s been fun to watch you: make new friends and keep your elementary friendships too.
  • Three things I love about you: your generosity, your inclusiveness, and your desire to try new things
  • You strengthened our family by: being happy, silly, and sweet.

This first year of middle school flew by! I was probably more nervous about the transition to middle school than they were. Overall, I’m proud of their academic effort as well as their willingness to spread their wings in a new school. They’ve met some great friends, continued to grow friendships, were active in clubs and sports, and took on more responsibilities at school and at home.

*As this school year wraps up, and I write this post about my kids’ year, I can’t help but think of the horrific events that unfolded at the elementary school in Uvalde, Texas yesterday. I’m absolutely heartbroken for that community and my prayers are for those who lost loved ones in this senseless act of violence.

I’m hugging my kids extra tight.

Summer Reading 2022

Hello!

My Summer Reading title made me laugh when I typed it out. Students see “summer reading” and groan…I see it and get excited for sunshine and reading by the pool!

Last year was my first year sharing books I wanted to read in the summer.

This was my 2021 list, and I read four of the six books. The two I didn’t read were Big Summer and That Summer.

My 2022 Summer Reading List:

  • The Summer Job
  • The Boardwalk Book Shop
  • The Summer Getaway
  • Out of the Clear Blue Sky

Some of these books were already on my “Summer Reads” list on Goodreads, and others I added to that list thanks to Sarah’s extensive book list!

Now, I highly doubt I will read all eight. My goal is to read five of these. I love a list, but I also don’t want to feel forced to read. Some of these books aren’t even out yet, and some I’m on a long wait list at the library.

That being said, I did pick up three of them at the library on Friday.

So, I will just continue to see what becomes available and read as I go. Of course, I will read other books too, but I’m sooo looking forward to lounging by the pool and getting caught up on reading.

Hello and Happy Monday! How was your weekend?

Our was..you guessed it…busy! The kids both had friends spend the night on Friday. Then, we spent most of Saturday in Louisville for a track meet that continued to be delayed due lightning, so they never ran. Hadley had big plans on Saturday night while the rest of us just hung out at home. Sunday, the kids were busy at church and then we went back to Louisville for them both to run the 800 m race.

It was a great weekend, but I’m ready to get these last few days of school over with, so we can enjoy summer.

Friday Favorites {#114}

Hello and Happy Friday! It’s our last Friday of the school year, and we are ready for the weekend.

As always, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Here are some favorites from the week:

Favorite Moment(s)

My dad came to visit this past weekend. His birthday was on Tuesday, so I encouraged him to come see us, have some cake, and watch the kids’ last regular season track meet on Monday.

On Sunday, we grilled out steaks and had lemon Bundt cake for dessert. The weather was great, and we were able to spend some time outside.

Monday was the kids’ last regular season track meet. They’ve improved so much and had such a great time this season. Both of them have set PR’s in their events, and the last meet was only for 6th graders. Hayden ran the 1600, 800 and one relay. Hadley ran 100m and two relays. They had quite the cheering section!

On Wednesday, they had their last track practice where they celebrated the season with ice cream and awards. Hayden earned a silver medal for finishing second place (he lost by a fraction a second) in the 6th grade mile while Hadley earned the two bronze medals for third place finishes with her relay teams. That meet was a great way to cap off the season.

Hayden’s 4×800 relay qualified for state in a couple of weeks!

The kids baptism was one year ago, and this week I randomly received the professional photos that were taken. The kids look both the same and older to me one year later. I hope that their faith remains strong and that their hearts always guide them.

We grilled out for my dad’s birthday, and I made two of our favorite summer dishes for sides.

This pasta salad is so easy and so delish. My favorite part is the bits of mozzarella!

My kids even request these asparagus fries. They are so good!

Summer Amazon Faves

Hello and Happy Friday Eve. Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite Amazon finds from last summer!

With the warmer temps, I’m already wearing some of these faves, so I thought I’d go ahead and share.

Sandals:

I’ve previously raved about these woven sandals that I bought last summer. Unfortunately, they aren’t available anymore, but…

…but these are very similar, come in a variety of colors, and have over 3,000 four star reviews.

I purchased these “comfort slides” in white two summers ago, and then again in pink last summer. They are perfect for the pool, and I often wore them to baseball games during those hot summer days last year. After I initially purchased them, I returned my regular 9 and sized up to 10 for the perfect fit.

I wear these sandals on the regular. I got them for Hadley two summers ago in white, and she still wears them. I purchased them in rose gold last summer and couldn’t love them more. (Because I sized up in the comfort slides, I knew to do the same in these. Size 10, instead of a 9, works perfectly for me.)

Dresses:

This dress was one of my favorites last summer. It comes in a few colors and is perfect to wear with slides, wedges or heels. It’s easy to dress up or down.

I wore it to Hadley’s dance recital last year as well as throughout the summer and back to school.

This dress was such a favorite that I purchased it in blue and then in gray.

The material is so soft, I love the high/low style of it.

This dress was another favorite of mine from last summer. I also wore it to school with a cardigan and out to dinner with friends with a denim jacket.

Fun in the Sun:

While I didn’t need another pair of sunglasses, I purchased these recently, and I love them.

I got this visor last summer, and it’s perfect for the pool. It’s also perfect for travel because it rolls up and fastens together for easy packing.

This swimsuit was my swimsuit of the summer last year. I purchased it in “big leopard” and “leopard.” There are so many cute options, and it is super comfortable.

This swim cover up was one of my favorites! I purchased it in navy, but there are so many awesome colors and patterns. I love that it buttons all the way up to give more styling options.

Hat and sunglasses are from Nordstrom, but here I am ready for the pool in swimsuit and cover up.

Other Summer Faves:

Hadley ended up getting these shorts in three colors for back to school.

She got the women’s XS, and they are super cute to wear with a t-shirt, tank, or even sweatshirt/sweater when the temps cool off.

I lived in this tank last summer. I bought it more than one color! It can easily be dressed up or down. I wanted it for the hot days at the ballpark, but here it is styled with white jeans…

With Hadley doing swim team and all our time spent at the pool, we tried to be proactive with hair care and the chlorine. This combo saved Hadley’s hair in the summer months.

The kids loved these goggles, and I always have an extra pair or two in the swim bag.

I’ve never been one to wear jewelry when I know I’m going to sweat! That being said, these gold glitter jelly bangles were too cute to pass up!

I wore them to the beach and to the pool often last summer.

Teacher Gift Ideas

Hello! I hope your week is off to a great start.

With the end of the school year approaching, I’m sharing a few favorite teacher gift ideas that we’ve given to the kids’ teachers. That being said, the kids are in middle school and I teach high school, so I know how it goes as kids get older. Middle and high school students have 6-7 teachers, so I can’t say enough how great a note is from time to time from both parents and students. Teachers really appreciate that more than you know.

This is basically another Etsy post because that’s where I turn most often for gifts especially personalized ones.

Gift Ideas:

Hadley gave this jute bag to her teacher last year, and it’s so cute. I’ve seen it shared on Instagram as a great beach bag or bridesmaid gift.

We gifted this door hanger to our sitter last year as she was graduating college and had secured her first teaching position.

This bag was the perfect gift for Hayden’s teacher last year. We filled it with colorful pens and sticky notes. (This shop has so many cute bag options!)

I’ve shared these flower pots on multiple occasions. After ordering them for my kids’ teachers, I purchased a couple for our back patio. (This shop also has so many cute door hangers!)

The kids helped me plant the flowers to give to their 4th grade teachers. This was spring of 2020, so we wanted to do something extra special for their teachers.

I just recently shared how I gave this door hanger to my mom for her birthday this year. It’s super cute and interchangeable, so I know it would look perfect on a classroom door.

Other Gift Ideas:

While I haven’t purchased these items, they are cute and have good reviews.

  • Beaded wristlet key ring: We’ve given a similar key ring to our sitter last year.
  • Personalized tub: We gave a similar one to the kids’ first grade teachers and filled them with school supplies. It would also be perfect to hold books in the classroom.
  • Love to teach sign: I’ve had this saved on Etsy for quite some time. It would be perfect for a classroom.
  • Personalized travel pouch: Obviously this is good for travel, but it would be a cute cosmetic bag or pencil pouch.
  • Tumbler: These would be perfect for the summer and sipping water by the pool!
  • Personalized note pads: We’ve given similar to the kids’ teachers as Christmas gifts.

What I love about Etsy is you can continue to search for similar items if what you find isn’t in stock or has longer shipping than expected. Depending on when your school gets out, most of these items seem to arrive pretty quickly.

Teachers also love:

  • gift cards (We’ve given gift cards to Trader Joe’s, Amazon, and a local book store)
  • school supplies
  • candles
  • and…wine!

Hello Monday

Hello! How was your weekend? We had a really great one.

…to share my Weekend Top 5…

Of course our weekend was filled with sports. Hayden ran in the end of the season district meet on Friday night. He wasn’t feeling 100%, but he pushed through.

Then, on Saturday the kids and I went to their school’s lacrosse game. They were playing in the lower division championship game. It was my first ever lacrosse game, and it was very exciting. I had so many questions but enjoyed it!

Then, we saw the end of cousin Wyatt’s baseball game. His team won!

It’s officially patio season. After the track meet, Hadley went to a sleep over and I chatted with some of my mom friends for a bit before going home.

I took the time to get a pedicure on Saturday afternoon, and I chose my traditional summer color: OPI Strawberry Margarita (which so happened to match my cardigan!)

The weather was gorgeous all weekend. Travis worked hard in the yard all weekend. He mulched the back and front yard and then planted the front porch flowers. They yard looks so pretty. We’re ready for summer!

We finished the weekend celebrating a big family birthday with a lemon bundt cake.

It was a great weekend.

We have a four day week (no school tomorrow!) and a three day week next week. I hope to keep posting pretty regularly, but will just see where the week takes me.

Friday Favorites {#113}

Hello and Happy Friday!

Not only am I counting down Mondays, now I’m focused on Fridays too. After today, we only have one more Friday in the school year (even though next Friday isn’t our last day.)

We’ve had a really great week filled with sports, school activities, and more!

As always, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Here are some favorites from the week:

I’m throwing it all the way back to last Friday. Oaks was such a fun day, and the weather ended up being great as well.

I shared that Travis was bummed about the outcome as Epicenter was the favorite that he’d hoped would win. That being said, he shared this on our family group text, and I thought it was the perfect message for the kids:

“To go” margs at a local restaurant are definitely a favorite especially on a chilly and rainy Saturday.

Mother’s Day was great! I was up before the kids (times have definitely changed!), but I received the sweetest card, we went to church, and we enjoyed brunch at a favorite place.

We also picked up my traditional Mother’s Day gift: ferns for the front porch. I think this weekend Travis plans on getting flowers for the front porch planters.

Another favorite this week has been the weather. It seemed to jump to summer, but I will take it! So far this spring, I’ve had to bring coats and blankets to Hayden’s baseball games, but this week has been filled with warmth and sunshine.

Hadley had her end of the year chorus concert last night. We enjoyed listening to the combined chorus and orchestra concert. The end of the year festivities are in full force.

WordPress alerted me of this fun milestone. I don’t write my posts for the likes, but it is fun when readers “like” and comment on posts. Like social media, I guess…engagement makes it better!

Favorite Mom Meme:

Laundry has always been a weakness. I’ve always tried to keep it to the weekend, and I’m ok with that plan. That being said, I think we still have some laundry in the dryer from last Sunday. Getting everything put away is the hardest part!

This flashback from 2015 always cracks me up when it pops up in my Facebook memories. We’d gone to to the park with my brother, so he could take a few photos of my nephew for a Mother’s Day gift, I think. Hadley wanted her photo, and this is what we got…haha

It’s very much her personality both then and now!
