Friday Favorites {#89}

Hello! How was your week? We had a good one. It was jam packed as usual, and I swear it took us a couple of days to recover from Halloween. Thankfully, we had no school on Tuesday, so that was definitely a favorite and gave us some time to catch up on errands and household chores!

Today, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika to share my favorites from each day.

Saturday:

Saturday, we went out to lunch before having a pretty relaxing afternoon at home. That evening, Hayden had a basketball game, and cousin Wyatt came to watch him play.

Hadley had a fun overnight at Great Wolf Lodge. While going there was probably a favorite for her, my favorite moment was when she arrived home! Of course, she was worn out and fell asleep on the couch at my brother’s house, but we were happy she was back home.

Sunday:

Sunday was a full and busy day. Again, we had family in town, went to church, and had a Halloween lunch. Then, of course, it was Halloween! Lots of trick-or-treating going on and tons of candy!

Monday:

Monday was a pretty typical Monday, but my favorite part was Hayden’s hyperbole homework. It made me laugh out loud!

Actually, another favorite part of Monday was staying up late to watch the Chiefs win on Monday Night Football. It was nice knowing I could stay up a bit later with no school on Tuesday.

Tuesday:

On Tuesday, I slept until 8:00! That never happens, even on the weekend. After sipping my morning coffee and watching a show, I decided to go to Michael’s to purchase another pencil tree. I got this one last year on sale (on Election Day!) for the sun room. Then, I moved it to my bedroom once we bought our real Christmas tree for the living room. We have a bigger artificial one that we used in the sun room last year. It was on its last leg, so we decided to toss it.

So, this is me–I have up two trees, and the rest of my house will remain full of pumpkins for a couple of more weeks. I just love the glow of a Christmas tree and figure, “Why not?!”

After my successful trip to Michael’s, I put up both pencil trees. One in the office off the living room (until we get the real tree) and then the other one in the sun room.

A few more notes about my favorite tree: its’s currently on sale, last year it sold out in a couple of weeks, teachers get an additional 10% off at Michael’s, and the Michael’s employee at check out said there’s a shortage of trees this year! Consider yourself warned 😉

While I was doing all of that, Hadley went roller skating with her friends!

That afternoon, we met my brother-in-law at a nearby park, so he could take Hayden’s cross country photos. Hayden missed out on the school xc photos when he was out with Covid. I can’t want to see how they turned out, but here’s a sneak peek:

That evening, Hayden had a basketball game which is always fun to watch.

Then, I finished up the day reading my book by the glow of tree.

Here’s what the one in the sun room looks like:

(I used a blanket as a tree skirt until my one from Amazon arrives)

Wednesday:

On Wednesday, I made a pit stop at one of my favorite places: the library! Hayden wanted to read the third Hunger Games book, and I had placed a hold on The Girls in the Stilt House.

That evening, I finished Not a Happy Family on my Kindle, and I enjoyed it.

Thursday:

Yesterday, I had my monthly facial and did dermaplane. It’s my favorite treatment! I had to miss my appointment last month because we were in the thick of Covid, so I was so happy for a little pampering yesterday afternoon (in between shuttling the kids here, there and everywhere!)

Favorite Mom Meme:

Haha! This meme made me laugh..

Bonus Fave: Flashback Friday

Afters seeing my Halloween post, my aunt remembered this photo of Hadley in my mom’s witch hat! I think this was probably 2012. Such a sweet memory.

One more fave:

Look at this exciting notification I received on my Word Press app! It still blows my mind that so many people stop by and read my posts! This is such a fun community. I’ve only been blogging for a little over two years, and I really do enjoy it, and I’ve “met” so many great people along the way.

Weekly Recap:

This week I had a few posts where I shared the books I read in October, my Amazon purchases over the past month, and a recap of Halloween!

One more thing before I go. Monday is our NJAM link up, and the topic is favorite small shops. I know I will share some of my favorite Etsy finds! This is the perfect time of the year to share these shops, and I try to “shop small” when I can.

We “fall back” this weekend, and I can’t wait!

Thanks so much for reading,

Halloween Recap

We had a really great Halloween, and I love that it fell on the weekend because it gave us some extra time to hang with family and have a few extra minutes without being rushed to put on costumes and take photos.

Leading up to Halloween, I wanted to find an evening with no activities to have dinner together and carve pumpkins. On Wednesdays, for now, we don’t have any evening activities. So, last Wednesday, we had our “Spooky” dinner (bloody finger hot dogs, brains (mac and cheese) and eyeballs (green grapes) which is always a fun tradition.

Then, we carved pumpkins…

Actually, for the second year in a row, the kids did this pretty independently, and I love how they turnd out!

Hadley got major use out of her Halloween costume. She wore it to turnk or treat with her friends last week.

She then wore it to an overnight at Great Wolf Lodge last weekend.

Halloween morning started with pumpkin muffins for breakfast. I love the Trader Joe’s mix.

We then had a “Spooky” lunch with my mom, Gma, my brother and his family. At the last minute, I decided to make mummy dogs, and they were so good.

After lunch, Hadley and Travis went to Goodwill to finish getting Hayden’s costume. Travis had the idea of Hayden being Happy Gilmore, and Hayden thought that idea was funny since he loves golf and likes that movie.

A giraffe and Happy Gilmore…

Annual photo with the cousins: Ariel and a ninja!

Then, my mom joined in the fun with her witch costume that she’s had for years!

Then the kids went to trunk or treat at our church. Hadley helped some friends pass out candy to the little ones while Hayden walked around with my niece and nephew.

We changed up our trick-or-treating this year and instead of hosting, we went to a friend’s house so the kids could all T or T together.

Great group of kids ❤️

Hadley and crew who dressed as animals in their onsies.

The kids took off to trick-or-treat, and Travis and I walked home. I’d left out the candy, but was able to pass some out for about 30 minutes when we got home.

I haven’t passed out candy since 2009 when I had a very big pregnant belly. Time flies.

My kids got so much candy it was ridiculous.

This was me:

I’m giving them a few days, but then I’m going to have them pick a few favorite pieces of candy while I take some to school for my students. They love earning a piece or two when they’ve finished an assignment!

We had a great Halloween and the weather was perfect! I’m still struggling with the fact that it’s now November! In a couple of weeks, I will have two 12 years olds! Again, time flies!

I’m not sure if I will have have a post ready for tomorrow, but I will for sure be back on Friday to share my favorites from the week.

See you soon!

Prime Purchases: November 2021

Hello! The Halloween costumes are put away, so now it’s time to start thinking about birthday gifts for my kids, turkey, and of course, Christmas gift ideas. November and December are very overwhelming months for me. I need to start making a list (and checking it twice!) I’m hoping Amazon will be of big help like in years past!

Since it’s the first Tuesday of the month, I’m linking up with Tanya for her this month’s Prime Purchases.

This month month I bought:

I have these 7/8 leggings in gray and black. I purchased another pair in navy. I can’t say enough good things about these leggings. I love the length, the angled hem, and the side pocket. My other pairs have held up nicely, and are the perfect fit.

7/8 leggings

I purchased this dress to wear to Keeneland with friends a few weeks ago. It’s pretty, flowy and comfy!

Flowy 3/4 sleeve dress

I wanted a bigger purse for fall and winter. I still use my messenger bag, but sometimes I want something that will hold more. I guess in the cooler and colder months, I feel like I have more to carry. I loved the look of this purse, and it also has the cross body option. I’d been missing a purse that has pockets, and I love that this one has so many storage options. I purchased the gray brown gun metal color, and I love it.

Hobo Purse

Hadley and her friends decided to make their costumes pretty simple, and they each were a different animal for Halloween. Of course, I would have bought Hadley a costume anyway, but the fact that she will wear this onsie as pajamas was a win as well. The past two Christmases, I’ve given her onsie animal pjs (from Target), so I knew she’d wear this one over time as well.

Giraffe onsie

A quick and easy costume and cozy pjs…what more can she ask for?!

I usually put Christmas lights up around my white board at school in the winter months. I decided I wanted something for year round, so I ordered this pack of string lights.

Lights

I put them up in my classroom within minutes. They come with a remote with different settings, but I just keep them on the regular setting. Students get distracted enough without the help of flashing lights!

I’m very pleased with my Prime Purchases this month. What have you been Priming?

We don’t have school today, so I’m going to get caught up on my weekend chores! Tomorrow, I’m sharing the details from our fun and festive Halloween.

Thanks so much for reading,

October: What I’ve Been Reading

Hello! Happy November 1st! How was your weekend? We had a good one, and the kids had a great Halloween.

Today, I’m sharing the books I read in October. I read two, and then as I sat down to write this post, I realized I could add in a book that I read with the English 1 students that I’ve regularly helped this month.

This month I read:

{As always, book summaries are from Goodreads…}

The Wrong Family:

The Wrong Family

Summary:

Juno was wrong about Winnie Crouch.

Before moving in with the Crouch family, Juno thought Winnie and her husband, Nigel, had the perfect marriage, the perfect son—the perfect life. Only now that she’s living in their beautiful house, she sees the cracks in the crumbling facade are too deep to ignore.

Still, she isn’t one to judge. After her grim diagnosis, the retired therapist simply wants a place to live out the rest of her days in peace. But that peace is shattered the day Juno overhears a chilling conversation between Winnie and Nigel…

She shouldn’t get involved.

She really shouldn’t.

But this could be her chance to make a few things right.

Because if you thought Juno didn’t have a secret of her own, then you were wrong about her, too.

Quick Thoughts:

I loved this book. It had just enough suspense. I held my breath for Juno on many occasions. The last quarter of the book, when the action really picked up, I was kind of like “huh?…” I wasn’t expecting that character involvement. The ending was creepy but tied the plot all up nicely. I’ve read The Wives by Fisher, and I loved this one so much more.

Rating:

One Day You’ll Thank Me:

One Day You’ll Thank Me

Summary:

The fan favorite star of the Bravo hit series Southern Charm offers a witty and candid collection of essays on dating, pregnancy, and parenthood.

Growing up in South Carolina with a family that goes back ten generations, Cameran Eubanks knew from a young age that Southern women are expected to want the white picket fence life. But Cameran has never been your typical Southern belle, and she was always determined to flout expectations.

She set out to paint the town red, enjoy her single life, focus on her successful real estate career, maybe join the cast of a hugely popular reality show…and then she met her future husband, Jason. After falling in love and getting married, Cameran faced the same dilemma so many women encounter: whether or not to have kids. Ultimately, her own journey to motherhood was anything but simple.

Now, she takes you deeper into her life—from her first foray into reality TV on The Real World to dating in her twenties to the honest truth about her pregnancy and motherhood—to get to know the person behind the camera. Known as the voice of reason on Southern Charm, she’ll share the same honest advice she gives to her castmates and guide y’all through dating, pregnancy, and motherhood. Charming, hilarious, and a hell of a lot fun, One Day You’ll Thank Me is for anyone who has ever wondered if they should or can.

Quick Thoughts:

This book reminded me a bit of the Jenny McCarthy book, Belly Laughs, I read while pregnant with the kids. This wasn’t all about pregnancy, but it definitely was mostly about motherhood. Cameran is one of my favorite Southern Charm cast members (I love that show), and missed her during last season. She definitely tells it like it is on both the show and in this book. I appreciate her sense of humor, sarcasm, and truth.

I enjoyed reading about her days on The Real World. While I realize this isn’t a Southern Charm tell all, I do wish there was more Southern Charm insight.

This was a quick read for me, and one I’d been wanting to read for a while.

Rating:

Honestly, it should be more like a 3.5 star review, but I like her… 😉

Of Mice and Men:

Of Mice and Men

Summary:

An intimate portrait of two men who cherish the slim bond between them and the dream they share in a world marred by petty tyranny, misunderstanding, jealousy, and callousness. Clinging to each other in their loneliness and alienation, George and his simple-minded friend Lennie dream, as drifters will, of a place to call their own—a couple of acres and a few pigs, chickens, and rabbits back in Hill Country where land is cheap. But after they come to work on a ranch in the fertile Salinas Valley of California, their hopes, like “the best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men,” begin to go awry.

Of Mice and Men also represents an experiment in form, as Steinbeck described his work, “a kind of playable novel, written in novel form but so scened and set that it can be played as it stands.” A rarity in American letters, it achieved remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films. Steinbeck’s tale of commitment, loneliness, hope, and loss remains one of America’s most widely read and beloved novels.

Quick Thoughts:

I hadn’t read this novella since college, and I’ve never taught it. I enjoyed reading it with a small group of students because we were able to discuss so much…themes of lonliness, power vs powerless, friendship, character development, the American Dream, the setting and Great Depression time period.

A few favorite quotes:

  • “I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why.” ~Lennie
  • “As happens sometimes, a moment settled and hovered and remained for much more than a moment. And sound stopped and movement stopped for much, much more than a moment.” ~Of Mice and Men
  • “As happens sometimes, a moment settled and hovered and remained for much more than a moment. And sound stopped and movement stopped for much, much more than a moment.” ~Of Mice and Men

Rating:

As an English teacher, it feels awkward giving such a classic a less than five star rating, but it was a pretty heavy read with a very heavy ending.

In November, I’m going to read at least one Christmas book, and decided to start with this one:

I won it from a Goodreads giveaway! I’ve enjoyed other books by Kristy Woodson Harvey, so I’m excited to start the holiday season off with this one.

What have you read this month? Next month, I will share the Christmas books I’ve read in the past during the holiday season! I know we are going to blink, and it will be 2022!

I hope you have a great week.

Friday Favorites {#88}

Hello and Happy Friday! I spent all of yesterday thinking it was Friday, so I’m glad that Friday is actually, finally here!

I have so much to share this week! As always, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Favorite Picture:

I shared in yesterday’s post about our trip to the orchard to get our pumpkins to carve. We were only there for a short period of time, but I’m glad we made it work!

Favorite Moment:

Hadley was an acolyte for the first time last Sunday. It was sweet to see her take on this role.

Favorite Food(s):

Amy shared her Greek bowl recipe, and I had to try it. Y’all, this dish is so good. I’ve had it three times in the past week. When she says not to skip the homemade tzatziki sauce, she’s not kidding. Fun Fact: I hate yogurt, so I was worried that I wouldn’t like the sauce…it’s so good! So good. (I skipped the tomatoes and olives because I don’t like those. I’m kind of picky about some things 😉

And…these: 🤣 {hashtag: balance}

I shared about this Pinterest Pumpkin Sugar Cookie recipe earlier this week. I made these on Sunday, and they didn’t last long at our house!

Other Faves:

Last Friday was so rainy and cool that we had the first fire of the year. Friday night was so nice. I was in my pj’s early (after the pumpkin patch), we had pizza for dinner, and I watched tv while enjoying a glass of wine. I went to bed pretty early too!

We had our “Spooky” dinner and carved pumpkins on Wednesday which are both favorite Halloween traditions.

Another favorite is seeing the kids do what they love…

Hayden has been having a good time with his new basketball team, and is really growing as a player. Also, I think he really is growing! Hadley doesn’t seem to be a head taller than him anymore!

Hadley had her first performance with her school dance team during halftime of the girls basketball game on Monday. Their routine was so fun, and she had a great time!

My favorite front yard trees are starting to show off! We have some rain coming through today, and I hope the leaves don’t all fall off. I want to enjoy this view for as long as possible.

It’s been Red Ribbon (Say No to Drugs) Week. Hadley has fully embraced the dress up days, and Hayden joined her on Tuesday…”I’m too smart for drugs…” Dress up in your favorite college shirt or your favorite career clothes.

Hadley and friends were so cute on Wednesday…”Travel with your pack drug free.” You and your pack of friends dress alike. Doesn’t every tween girl have black leggings, a black t-shirt, and a colorful tutu on hand?!?

It’s been fun seeing her excited about all of these middle school activities.

Also, Hadley and a couple of friends went to the Fall Festival at her friend’s church on Wednesday. They had lots of fun, and she brought home some candy!

giraffe, elephant, and waffle!

Favorite Mom Meme:

I definitely used to be the mom who would bring the cute homemade treat, but I must have outdone myself during the primary years because once the kids hit intermediate grades, this was me:

Bonus Fave: Flashback Friday

I think I probably share these around Halloween every year, but I always get a kick out of looking back on what the kids were each year.

Seriously, Hayden still doesn’t know what he will be this year because I keep saying no to “killer clown!”

(Batman and Robin in 2013 are my favorite costumes for the kids!)

Weekly Recap:

I had a busy blogging week. Memes, all about my teaching career, pumpkin cookies and pumpkin fun!

I hope you have a great weekend and a very Happy Halloween.

Pumpkin Patch Trip and More!

Hello! Today, I’m sharing one of my favorite posts of the year: a recap of our trip last week to the orchard to get our pumpkins + a bit more pumpkin fun.

This meme is me every year:

We never leave the orchard without spending less than $70 on pumpkins, donuts, cider and more!

We usually go to Evan’s Orchard in mid-October, but Travis was busy working, and we had friends in town. I decided to give it a shot right after school last Friday. Even though the weather looked gloomy, I still figured it was our one chance to go. To be honest, there are many years we’ve been so hot at the pumpkin patch, so I was happy to actually have to wear a jacket!

We arrived right around 4:30 and headed straight in to get our donuts and hot apple cider.

I always love the chairs and mums as we enter the store.

Besides the donuts and cider, Hayden (and Travis) couldn’t resist the buy two get one free fudge! We ended up with peanut butter, chocolate, and cookies and cream fudge too.

With our hot apple cider in hand (we needed it!), we walked over to the pumpkins.

Then, I saw a mom propping her kids up on the pumpkins, and I said, “Oh…I remember doing that with you all!” I then turned around to find Hadley lounging on the pumpkins saying, “Take my pic!”…followed by…

“Hayden, sit on the pumpkins for mom!” She gets me 😉 and even dressed appropriately for the pumpkin patch in her favorite fall sweatshirt!

I love this view.

We wandered around for a bit. Evan’s Orchard has a couple of displays for photo ops, and the kids obliged for a photo at this one. We usually get a family photo, but honestly there weren’t many people there to ask, and the wind was blowing!

They picked out their carving pumpkins, and then…

Hadley hopped on the swing for a bit while I….

snapped a few more gourd and pumpkin photos! This is my happy place.

And at precisely 5:15, we were back in the car!

It was a quick trip, but I’m glad we did it.

While there are times I’m sad about the fact my kids are growing up so quickly, I’m also embracing that we didn’t have to spend two hours on the slides, climbing hay bales, and feeding animals in the petting zoo. Those things are fun, but I’m happy that they are content with the scenery, the goodies, a few pics, and picking out the pumpkins.

Bonus! This was my breakfast over the weekend!

Speaking of pumpkins…

The kids painted pumpkins on Tuesday night with a few friends. These are porch pumpkins that will be delivered to some of our church members.

Then, last night, we had our “spooky” dinner of bloody finger hot dogs, green grape eye balls, and macaroni and cheese brains.

After that, the kids carved their pumpkins.

Of course, this has been the case most years 😂:

But, for the second year in a row, they were able to do most of the work! #andallthemamassaidamen

This week sure has been full of pumpkin fun!

See you back here tomorrow for Friday Favorites.

Pumpkin Sugar Cookies

Today, I’m sharing one of our favorite fall sweet treats!I I stumbled upon this Pinterest recipe a few years ago, and now I make a point to bake these cookies at least a couple of times each fall.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp corn starch
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 c unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 c unflavored vegetable shortening
  • 1 1/4 c granulated sugar
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2/3 c canned pumpkin puree
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat over to 350 degrees.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger and set aside.

3. In a bowl, using a mixer, cream together butter, shortening and sugar until fluffy.

4. Mix in egg yolks one at a time. Mix in pumpkin puree and vanilla extract.

5. Slowly add in dry ingredients and mix until combined.

6. Scoop dough out and shape into 3 Tblsp balls. Place on parchment paper lined baking sheets. (The recipe says to slightly flatten cookies, but I don’t do that.)

7. I roll them in sugar even though recipe doesn’t call for it.

8. Bake in preheated oven for 11-12 minutes.

9. Cool on the baking sheet for several minutes and then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

10. Icing:

I take a short cut and just buy vanilla frosting. After I frost the cookie, I sprinkle it with pumpkin spice. Delish!

We are big fans of pumpkin around here…pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, and pumpkin sugar cookies!

See you back here tomorrow. I will be recapping one of my favorite fall activities: the pumpkin patch!

Tuesday Teacher Talk

Hello!

Well, a big part of my life (for almost twenty years!) has been being a teacher. It dawned on me that I haven’t shared much about that aspect of my life, and a few readers commented on my recent Three Things post about my current Academic Interventionist job.

So, today I’m taking a stroll down memory lane and sharing my teaching experiences through the years in my first ever…

My first year of teaching was in a small school outside of Columbia, Missouri. I graduated from MIZZOU in May of 2002 and wanted to stay there a bit longer (and I was dating Travis at the time). I taught in a very small school where I was the only English 1 teacher. I had ninth graders all day long (I was more energetic then ;). Fun Fact: I was also the cheer leading coach that year. While I may have had more energy, I’ve never been described as peppy. The coaching position was attached to the English 1 teaching position which I actually don’t think you are allowed to do! Ahhh…small town life. Anyway, I enjoyed my time there. One funny memory I have is that one day I wore two different black shoes to school…both had a bit of a heel. It was a day the cheerleaders had to stay for the basketball game, and I just remember wanting to get home and out of my mismatched shoes!

The time came where Travis wanted to move back home to Kentucky and get into the horse business. While we were serious and had discussed marriage, I just didn’t feel like I could move to Kentucky yet and he wanted to get settled with a job. So, I took this opportunity to move back home to KC. I taught at large high school with a diverse population, and my mom taught at the middle school that was a feeder school to where I taught. Since I wasn’t married at the time, some of her students got a kick out of the fact that they had Mrs. Galvin in 7th grade and Ms. Galvin for 9th (or 11th) grade since I taught both of those grade levels that year. I also had the school newspaper as a class and loved it! They were a great group of kids. I loved being closer to my family, making more money, and being in a bigger school. My mom retired at the end of that school year right as I made the decision to move to Kentucky with Travis.

We got engaged in May of 2004 right as I found my job in a somewhat rural district in Kentucky. Nicholasville is right outside of Lexington and is a great community. There are two high schools in the district, and I loved my time at East. I taught English 1 for many years. I was blessed to work for the same four principals for 11 of my 12 years there. They were amazing principals and great leaders for our school. During that time, so much changed in my life. I got married, had the kids, and met some of my best friends. It was also during that time that I earned my two Master’s degrees. In the fall of 2005, right after I got married, I started on my Master’s in Literacy. I earned the degree online over the next two years from the University of Missouri. I have always loved the literacy part of teaching English, and especially the reading aspect.

my classroom at East

With that degree, I earned my Rank 2 in May of 2008 which led me to a Literacy Coaching position at East. Our district was a part of a four year grant with the University of Louisville. During that time, I did reading intervention with students. I typically had two classes of freshmen and one class of sophomores. Because it was a grant, the boundaries of those classes were dictated by the stakeholders, and I couldn’t have more than 12 in a class! The other half of my day was spent being a resource for teachers. I worked 1:1 with students, I shared strategies with teachers, I facilitated professional development opportunities and more!

Throwback photo in my old classroom.

Also, with the grant was the opportunity to earn a Reading Specialist degree. I put that off for a bit because it was optional, and I had a lot going on. Finally, I started that degree when the kids were two years old and worked hard for a year to complete my 36 hours. It was definitely a crazy time, but I knew I’d kick myself if I didn’t take advantage of earning this degree, and it was paid for by the grant. In May of 2012, I finished that degree and earned my rank 1. When the grant ended, I went back into the classroom and taught mostly juniors and seniors. While at East, I also took on other roles as teacher rep on SBDM and splitting the English department chair position for a few years. The year my kids were in kindergarten, I knew I needed a change. As much as I hated to leave, I needed to be on the same school district schedule as them, and I was unhappy with the new administration at my school. So, I looked, applied, and interviewed; I was able to secure a teaching position at a school in Lexington.

my first classroom at my new school

I now teach at one of the largest high schools in the state. It actually reminds me of where I taught in KC. I taught English 2 for the first time ever when I moved to this school. I taught sophomores the first year, then the second year I had sophomores and two MTSS classes for students who hadn’t met benchmark on the English or Reading sections of ACT. We did other things like reading strategies, study skills, test taking skills and more. The next year, I had sophomores and one class of freshmen! Blast from the past! They were actually a great way to start my day. Then, there was a job posted for a reading interventionist at my school which I applied for and got the job in late October 2019.

My current classroom

My job title now is Academic Interventionist. It feels like I’ve been doing this job forever, and it also feels like just yesterday I made the switch. This position was created because we needed extra support for students, especially freshmen. I started by checking in with students who were struggling in their classes, and provided some support for them. Sometimes that meant study or reading skills, other times I helped them complete work, and there were times we’d empty out backpacks and get organized!

I’d barely started that work when in March of 2020, everything changed. During the pandemic and virtual learning, I still helped students…just via Zoom. I’d also make lots of phone calls home to check on students and set up appointment times to work with them.

Crazy enough, this year is the first “normal” year I’ve had in this Academic Interventionist position. We’ve been able to expand how we help our students. Thanks to additional funds, we’ve added more teachers and are now a team. I now focus on Social Studies and English classes because there’s a new counselor to now focus on students who are struggling overall academically, and there’s a science and math interventionist as well.

What I love about this job is meeting new students, and every day is different. I have a Google form, and teachers add students to it who need additional academic support. Some days, my room is a quiet place for a student to take a test, other days I’m reading chapters of Of Mice and Men aloud to a few students and then we answer questions, I help students brainstorm ideas for their paper and then complete an outline, and I also encourage students to use reading and writing strategies. I help students 1:1, pairs, small groups and even half of classes. I’m also an extra resource as I sometimes go into classrooms on days when teachers need an additional teacher when giving a test or sharing new content.

I’m also on various committees such as MTSS (academic support for students), PBIS (behavioral support for students), and 9th grade Task Force (helping plan intentional strategies and help for our 9th graders).

I hope this job lasts as long as possible. I love it. Unfortunately, in education, the funding for these positions doesn’t always last forever. That being said, this job has been just what I’ve needed at this point in my career to have some flexibility in my day (sometimes, in education, you feel like you are stuck in a rut!), help students in a different way, and use some of my other teaching skills and credentials.

Favorite Education Quotes:

You know as an English/Language Arts teacher I love a good quote. Here are some of my faves:

  • “Teaching is the one profession that creates all other professions.” -Unknown

Shew! That was a long post. I guess when you’ve been teaching twenty years, you have a lot to recap! It’s really crazy to me that I’m 2 / 3 of the way finished with my teaching career. I swear I still remember what it feels like standing in front of my first hour class on my first day of teaching in 2002. Time flies.

Thanks so much for reading! Let me know if you have any questions! Also, if you are a teacher (or have been one!), share with me how many years you’ve been teaching, and what you teach. Teachers are a tribe that sticks together!

Monday Memes

Hello and Happy Monday! Well, the weekend sure went by quickly. We had a good mix of being busy and having some downtime. We were able to make it to the orchard to get pumpkins (and apple cider donuts) after school on Friday. Then, Hayden had basketball games Saturday and Sunday. We also spent time baking cookies, having dinner with friends, and going to church. I will share more details later in the week, but for now I’m sharing memes that made me laugh this month!

1.

This one was just appropriate for the month and made me laugh:

2.

I’ve said before that there’s no tired like teacher tired at the beginning of the year. Well, now it’s almost November, and I think we are all feeling this kind of tired:

While the year has been good, it’s just been hard for most that I know. To go with the meme, yes, the sub and bus driver shortage are real!

3.

Mind. Blown.

4.

Besides being a teacher, do you know what else is tough work? Being the mom of tween twins. While I don’t mind them keeping us busy with sports and dance, I swear they go a mile a minute from sun up to sun down….especially Hadley.

5.

Step one foot in the mall (or teach high school!), and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

6.

Haha…I feel like I only notice “bad signs” rather than the good ones…

7.

I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry.

8.

Homer! 🤣

9.

The only math I will do!

10.

This is definitely me! Even with less going on this weekend, I still only was able to watch a bit of TV. I so badly wanted to watch more episodes of Maid and even binge some Real Housewives, but barely had the time to do so.

I hope these memes gave you a laugh or two to start your week! I have some posts planned for this week, so make sure to come back!

Have a great day!

Friday Favorites {#87}

Hello and Happy Friday! This week has felt like an eternity, but it’s been a good one. I swear it was Wednesday before I felt like I’d caught up from our busy weekend, and now we’re ready for another weekend! I’m not mad about it!

Of course, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Favorite Photo:

There’s nothing better than Keeneland in the fall. We had so much fun with our friends (old and new) last weekend. I was worried it would rain, but the weather turned out to be perfect!

Favorite Moment:

We celebrated the kids’ 1st quarter report cards with the “You are Special” red plate a couple nights this week. We all weren’t sure what to expect with the first quarter of middle school, eight classes, and then being out for Covid/quarantine for two weeks. We expect A’s and B’s, and the kids delivered. Not going to lie…there were a couple of days they had to play major catch up with some missing work, but lessons were learned (literally and figuratively), and they pulled out great first quarter grades.

Favorite Clothing Item:

I have a couple of new favorite clothing items. I saw these boots from Walmart shared on Instagram, and I decided to buy them. I wore them twice last week. Once with this skirt, and new top from Target (I got it in gray and burgundy!), and then also to Keeneland paired with my dress from Amazon (seen in photo above, affiliate link).

*About the boot pricing: For quite a while size 9 were $40. All the sudden, the price, for size 9 only jumped to $70! I sized up to a 9.5 to get the $40 price, and they fit fine. Now, I see that size 9 are $52 while all the other sizes remain $40! Not sure what that’s all about, but I do love them, and I know I will wear them a lot.

I’m also loving this mock turtleneck sweater from Target. I bought it in this pretty coral color, and I wore it to school yesterday!

{please excuse my dirty mirror!)

Favorite Kid Quote:

I’ve previously shared that Hadley took a babysitting class over Fall Break. She now likes to point out possible choking hazards when she sees them! 😂*Also, Hadley had her first real sitting experience for family last Sunday, and she did a great job.

Favorite Food:

I’m still thinking about the sushi from OBC Kitchen last week!

Favorite Mom Meme:

This is 100% me.

Weekly Recap:

This week I had a few posts! I shared all about our busy weekend, my love for the Real Housewives, and my This or That answers for Halloween!

I hope you have had a great week. I’m hoping we will make it to the pumpkin patch this weekend. Other than that, Hayden has a basketball game, and that’s about it!
