Thursday Thoughts

Hello and happy Thursday!

I appreciated having Tuesday off from school, but I swear yesterday felt like a Monday all over again. Also, we finally got rain, and it just made for such a dreary day!

That being said, it’s Thursday…my favorite day of the week…and I have some thoughts…

Have you seen this post (or a similar one) on Instagram?

Well, it “stopped my scroll” as they say. I hadn’t really thought about it until seeing that post, and the other pictures included (a few are below):

I tend to be a neutral person, and I think I’ve always been this way. Neutral is “safe” and I’m not a risk taker. haha!

My first thought about this was that I feel like many of us are over-stimulated in society…by all the people, all the noise, the text message notifications, the ding of a new email, and more…so maybe we want our homes and other items to be more soothing?

To me, neutral colors are more calming. I prefer a “pop” of color as far as design goes in my home.

Through the years, I’ve “leaned into” this pale blue/green color as an accent. I appreciate the traditional white dishes, but I like the subtle details in this set, for example.

The first house that Trav and I owned had pink tile halfway up the wall…what a vibe! Honestly, it was a charming element to an older home. Eventually, we did have the tile painted, and it did freshen up the space, but I can see why the pink color was a choice at some point.

When decorating, I think that neutral colors are more practical, so that’s why I gravitate towards those. If I have a neutral couch and chairs, it’s easy to swap them if needed down the road without having to spend money on an entire living room overhaul.

I used to have “pops” of color with pillows on our leather couch, but even now I have pillows with neutral (washable!) pillow covers because of Homer.

Even Homer is a neutral color. haha

That being said, after living in this house over ten years, we finally updated the hall bath about a year and a half ago, and choosing this floral wallpaper was me being risky. haha

I have zero regrets, and love every element of our bathroom update.

I’ve even moved to more neutral colors with my Christmas decor as I’ve replaced some things during that years. That being said, I do still love classic red and green touches which is what most of my holiday decor still is at this point.

What are your thoughts on this? Is it something you’ve noticed?

  1. I can’t say our house is very neutral at all but after seeing something similar on Instagram about the bleaching of color from our world I’m noticing more on store exteriors and brands. Where many like Walmart, McDonald’s. etc. are going more to gray and downplaying their bright tones/logos and only use as accents now. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing but it wasn’t something I had picked up on until seeing the post.

  2. I’ve definitely become more neutral with my decor, too. For Christmas, I am trying to do more evergreen and Ralph Lauren blue/green plaid. I also like gold accents. For your home, you just don’t get tired of neutrals like you do with very colorful things, perhaps?

I love your wall paper so much!

I have a beef – the overstimulating/over Amazony/too much going on classrooms! I really don’t think it’s good for kids to have that much going on. If I were a principal, I would want some say in this matter.

    1. Ohhh Ralph Lauren theme would be so classic and chic. I love gold touches too.
I know what you mean about too much going on on classroom walls. I don’t see it much in high school but even some elementary school classrooms see overstimulating to me.

  3. Yes, I have noticed that most cars seem to be white, grey, or black. We had a red car growing up and then a blue one.

Looking around my house as I type this I think I’m in the middle somewhere, we have a mix of neutrals and colours. My older son wears all black and white, whereas my younger son has all the colours all the time!

    I love your bathroom wallpaper!!

    1. So interesting that your boys have different styles…although, of course they are individual people! I just always find it fascinating how similar or different siblings are.
My dad had a red car for most of my childhood.

  4. My apartment is mostly pastels but it’s from the 1940s so it’s perfect. I did notice this morning, hours before reading your post, that EVERY SINGLE CAR in front of me, in all lanes, both directions, were black. Including my New Beetle. lol Bring back all the pretty car colors!

  5. I saw that series of posts and it really made me realize how neutral things are now. I like it – I tend to stick with tans with blue accents. I do remember the 1990s though when we all though hunter green and burgandy were so cool! Great post!

    1. It is interesting how colors have changed through the years. I remember how my grandparents’ houses were and even the house I lived in until we moved when I was in middle school.
