As the month of March winds down, I’m linking up with Holly and Patty for Monthly Musings.
This month’s topic is Spring Fashion.
“Fashion”…this word is tricky for me as I don’t feel like I’m very fashionable. Put together most of the time…maybe…but I don’t know about “fashionable.”
1. What is your go-to spring outfit?
Once spring break is over, my typical school outfit is a dress, cardigan, and sandals if the weather cooperates.
2. Favorite spring fashion pieces?
I can’t wait to see how others answer this question. I don’t even change up my jewelry from season to season.
I do enjoy finding (or borrowing) a fascinator for Oaks.
3. Do you change your handbag for spring?
I usually switch from a larger winter purse to this crossbody. I like changing out the straps in the spring and the summer.
4. When do you bring out your open toed shoes?
After spring break if the weather cooperates…and then I usually don’t put sandals up until early October after fall break.
Just this week, I got a pedicure. I tried a new color…Arigato from Tokyo.
5. Favorite spring scents?
If this means perfume, I don’t really change that up.
These three continue to be my “go to” scents that Trav and the kids have given me the past couple of Christmases.
If we are talking scents like candles, I do change those throughout the seasons. I love linen and lilac scents in the spring.
6. When to wear white?
I don’t really have a hard and fast rule. Just to wear something different to school, I usually get out my white denim in May.
7. Favorite way to add spring to wardrobe when weather isn’t cooperating?
Well, weather cooperating or not, a cardigan is my “go to” in the spring because you also never know about classroom temps. This is my favorite cardigan; I have it in three colors!
8. Do you change your makeup routine in the spring?
I wear Seint year round, and the only thing I change is the highlight color if I have a tan.
9. How do you transition your wardrobe for spring?
I love neutral colors, but I do like to wear more color once spring arrives.
10. Favorite spring jewelry or accessories?
I don’t really change up my jewelry. I’m still loving these rings which were a recent purchase. I love rose gold.
This fun link up has me wanting the temps to stay warm. Bring on spring!
I can’t believe it’s already Wednesday…and it’s the last week of March. While February tends to feel like a slow month, March has flown by.
Today, I’m sharing the books I read in March.
I saw this on Instagram and laughed. Now, I don’t think I ever really lied on my reading logs in school. I’ve always enjoyed reading. That being said, as a teacher, I know there have been kids through the years who haven’t been fully honest with their reading logs.
I shared this with my brother, and he reminded me of the time I forged my mom’s signature on his band practice card. He remembers the craziest things! 😆
Y’all, your girl finally read her “typical” monthly average of three books. Honestly, I actually thought I might get a fourth book in, but I’ve started one at least.
Looking at this month is interesting. I read a five star, four star, and three star book…at least based on my rating!
Also, coincidentally, all the book I read this month I had added to my reading list thanks to Shay.
This month I read:
{As always, book summaries are from Goodreads…}
The Frozen River:
Summary:
A gripping historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history.
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own.
Over the course of one winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices mount, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal, implicating those she loves, and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie.
Clever, layered, and subversive, Ariel Lawhon’s newest offering introduces an unsung heroine who refused to accept anything less than justice at a time when women were considered best seen and not heard. The Frozen River is a thrilling, tense, and tender story about a remarkable woman who left an unparalleled legacy yet remains nearly forgotten to this day.
Quick Thoughts:
This was one of Shay’s book club books, but I didn’t get it from the library in time.
I enjoy historical fiction, but I don’t think I’ve read books that are set in the 1700’s!
I loved Martha’s character. She’s a strong and independent woman. I love that we saw all sides of her…as a midwife, community member, wife, and mom. The plot held my attention from the beginning, covered serious and light-hearted topics, was suspenseful and eye-opening.
Some meaningful quotes:
“Memory is a wicked thing that warps and twists. But paper and ink receive the truth without emotion, and they read it back without partiality. That, I believe, is why so few women are taught to read and write. God only knows what they would do with the power of pen and ink at their disposal”
“The joy of having sons is that they worship their mothers. Until one day, suddenly, they don’t. Then, that boy – once small and sweet – begins the long, hard process of separation, until at last he rips the seam. But the holes where mother and son were once knit together remain.”
“It rains upon the just and the unjust, love. And we no more deserve this than our friends or neighbors do.”
“This is a new, bittersweet milestone of motherhood. They have gotten bigger, as have their problems. But they have also grown wiser, and this is a miracle because wisdom is not a thing you can acquire for your children.”
Rating:
I truly think this will be one of my top reads in 2024!
John Stamos: If You Would Have Told Me:
Summary:
We think we know John Stamos. The beloved actor of television (Full House, ER, General Hospital), film, and Broadway grew up in front of the cameras and drummed his way into our hearts as an honorary Beach Boy. In this candid memoir, readers can peek into the heart of this familiar face. It’s a rollicking insider look at Hollywood, fame, fortune, and failure. It’s a tender treaty on love, friendship, and fatherhood. Throughout it all, Stamos maintains a sense of wonderment captured in the title If You Would Have Told Me.
Quick Thoughts:
Well, “Have mercy!” This book wasn’t on my radar, but the Kindle version was available at the library, and I figured it would be a quick read. I love reading memoirs/ autobiographies as they are “permission to be nosy” 😆. I knew this one would include all about Full House, Stamos’ marriage to Rebecca Romijn, the Beach Boys and more!
It was an easy read that I really enjoyed. John Stamos sure is insightful. 😉 Another book with some favorite quotes:
“Life is both solid and fragile, isn’t it?”
“Not everything that hurts is an emergency. Sometimes we need to test our pain threshold to see how well we heal.”
“Your reward for hard work, more work.”
(On parenting) “At the end of the day, you might not win a trophy or get a ring, but if done correctly, you’ll have a more compassionate, intelligent, and loving version of yourself out there in the world. The essence of it all: Sacrifice.”

The Heiress:
Summary:
When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she’s not only North Carolina’s richest woman, she’s also its most notorious. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge mountains. In the aftermath of her death, that estate—along with a nine-figure fortune and the complicated legacy of being a McTavish—pass to her adopted son, Camden.
But to everyone’s surprise, Cam wants little to do with the house or the money—and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes. Instead, he rejects his inheritance, settling into a normal life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules, a woman just as eager to escape her own messy past.
Ten years later, Camden is a McTavish in name only, but a summons in the wake of his uncle’s death brings him and Jules back into the family fold at Ashby House. Its views are just as stunning as ever, its rooms just as elegant, but coming home reminds Cam why he was so quick to leave in the first place.
Jules, however, has other ideas, and the more she learns about Cam’s estranged family—and the twisted secrets they keep—the more determined she is for her husband to claim everything Ruby once intended for him to have.
But Ruby’s plans were always more complicated than they appeared. As Ashby House tightens its grip on Jules and Camden, questions about the infamous heiress come to light. Was there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? Soon, Jules and Cam realize that an inheritance can entail far more than what’s written in a will—and that the bonds of family stretch far beyond the grave.
Quick Thoughts:
This was another of Shay’s book club books, but again, it wasn’t available at the library when she suggested it.
This was a quick read, but I didn’t love it. I felt like so many of the characters just seemed so crazy. I don’t mind a crazy character, but this was just hard to relate to.
There were surprises along the way, and everything was tied up pretty nicely in the end. I’ve read at least one other book by Hawkins…The Wife Upstairs and really liked it. A friend recommended The Villa, so I’ve downloaded it to my Kindle.
Rating:
Sorry if you read Shay’s blog and mine. This might have been a boring recap. I want to participate in her book club, but most of the books have library wait list, so I’m reading them just whenever they become available for me.
Maybe April will be my four book month! Having spring break should help.
How was your weekend? Ours was pretty good. It was so nice to have the sun shining even though the temps were pretty cool outside. We mostly either were watching March Madness games on tv (my house is March Sadness with UK’s first round loss!) or watching Hadley play in her volleyball tournament.
One more week stands between us and spring break…and we’re ready for it!
Can you believe this is the last week of March?! Since next Monday is April 1st, that means today is the last Monday of the month, so I’m sharing some memes that made me chuckle this month.
Here are some of my favorite memes this month:
I swear grocery shopping sends me spiraling sometimes. Why does a big pack of applesauce (the squeeze kind) now cost $10? That’s just such an easy snack that my kids throw in the sports bags, so I usually buy a box every couple of weeks. The $10 price tag at Kroger now makes me angry. Obviously, other prices have gone up too, but that’s the one that stopped me in my tracks yesterday when I placed my Kroger order.
Like…every single store is this way…
My “toxic trait” is being annoyed at Travis when he passes up a good parking spot. haha
Does your family do this too? All four of us have our spots and haven’t changed them in years.
Also, kind of a funny story, but Hayden slips Homer some food sometimes. If we have people over, and someone sits in Hayden’s seat, he sits there and begs…and sometimes gives a soft growl because he wants food. He’s so bad…but I blame Hayden 😆
Wouldn’t this make graduation even more fun?!
I can’t imagine if I didn’t start my day with coffee. I’d wake up grumpy and stay grumpy.
“Receipts” as the kids say.
Well, I actually have had a few orders recently. Between trying to find something for Hadley to wear to church on Easter Sunday as well ordering a few things for their Easter baskets, I have had a few packages lately. That being said, I’m glad to take a break for waiting for packages to arrive.
This one is very relatable. Where have all my forks gone?
Speaking of Easter, I had a few extra minutes this weekend, and made a “Teen Easter Basket” graphic and have added some ideas to my Instagram stories.
Then, I’ve saved them in a highlight. Honestly, a lot of the ideas aren’t just for teens…but that’s obviously my frame of mind as Easter approaches.
Today is also the last day of Amazon’s “Spring Sale.” So, since I won’t have time for a post for the sale or Easter basket ideas, I just thought Instagram highlights would be a good spot to share ideas.
TGIF…am I right? I think I’ve gone most of my life without actually saying that phrase, and now I really feel like I’m living for the weekends. The month before spring break always has me hanging on for dear life.
As always, I’m linking up with Erika and Andrea for this week’s Friday Favorites.
Here are some favorites from the week:
Thanks for indulging me this week, as I “celebrated” this blogging milestone. I’ve had fun looking back on posts and sharing those recaps this week.
WordPress even gave me a virtual “pat on the back.”
On Saturday, Travis and I finally had a quick coffee date before Hadley’s volleyball games.
Last Saturday, my brother and his family came over for corned beef, cabbage, and Irish soda bread.
The meal was a hit!
Hadley had games on Saturday and Sunday, but with Sunday being St. Patrick’s Day, most of the teams were looking pretty festive!
On Sunday, I had a quick errand at my favorite book store. I wish I could have stayed longer!
I picked up one of these bunny plants at Trader Joe’s last year, and I couldn’t resist getting another one this year.
One of Hayden’s Christmas gifts was this “plunge tub.” Like we need more thing in the garage…haha
He’s been using it though! I have to commend him for his dedication.
Favorite Foods:
Well, besides corned beef and cabbage, we had a couple of other delicious meals this week.
Then, Wednesday night, I made Creamy White Chicken Enchiladas, and we had leftovers last night.
The lazy dish
Friday Funny:
If you don’t follow @walksauce42_ on Instagram, you should check him out. He’s too funny. I’ve reposted a couple of his reels in my Insta stories…and they always make me chuckle.
Favorite Kid Quote:
Since we adopted Homer, we don’t know his exact birthday. Hayden mentioned that Homer is almost five, and I said he probably is actually five based on how old he was when we adopted him in June of 2019.
Hayden said, “Wow! He’s 35 (in dog years), and he still sleeps in his parents’ room!” 😆
Favorite Mom Meme:
Not to name names in my house, but rhymes with “badly.”
Bonus Fave: Flashback Friday:
I love this Facebook memory from 2014. Hayden wearing Trav’s shirt from when he was a kid while shining a “spotlight” on his food using his flashlight. He’d told me he was “inspecting” his dinner!
I never had time for a blog post, but Amazon is having their “Spring Sale” now through Monday. I’ve been highlighting some of my favorite Amazon items this month in my Instagram stories, but I will try to share a few more favorite sales as well.
Since I’ve shared posts 1 and 2 earlier this week “celebrating” my 1,000th blog post…
…Today, I’m wrapping up this recap by sharing thoughts and posts from the third column of “What do lifestyle blogs talk about?” graphic.
Parenting:
Well, the first thing I thought about with parenting, is that I try to keep it light and humorous with my Friday “mom memes.”
I wrote this Thursday Thoughtspost last year reflecting on my kids getting older.
We went from this to this…real quick.
I’m currently working my way through a couple of parenting books geared towards raising teens, and I will share those after I finish them.
Marriage:
Just like parenting, even though I’ve been married a while, I’m still no expert.
I share what we are up to mostly when recapping what’s going on like going to a concert, Keeneland or out to dinner.
I never asked for it, but Travis started writing my name in bubble letters a long time ago. While that doesn’t really have anything to do with marriage, it’s a nice gesture that is now something I look forward to.
I wrote this post on the 5 Love Languages a few years ago, and I do think it’s important to try to understand the best way to communicate with your spouse (and all loved ones, really)
Photography:
No photography tips from me.
The only photos I know how to take are using my phone…and even now, the kids help me make those look better! Of course, I’ve shared lots of photos on the blog through the years.
Motivation and Inspiration:
Through some self-care and Enneagram posts, I probably have written about motivation and even inspiration.
When I think “inspiration,” I think of Pinterest where I “pin” ideas.
Recently, I wrote a “Pinned on Pinterest” post, and I have another one planned soon.
Pinterest is a great spot to find inspiration whether it’s for home decor, clothing styles, quotes, and more.
Art and Design:
I’m not an artist!
As far as design is concerned, we recently did Hadley’sRoom Refresh, and the last piece arrived yesterday!
I’ve shared plenty of “before” and “afters” on how we’ve updated the house through the years…and some smaller projects like “ship lap” and like “chalk paint.”
Crafting:
Ahhh – this is one of times that I wish I’d started the blog when the kids were younger. We used to do lots of crafts. When the kids were little, I always had them make an ornament for family for Christmas. We also did lots of coloring, painting, and other activities often when they were little.
During the spring of 2020, the kids were still young enough, and we had the time, to do a few Covid crafts which was fun.
One of the first Not Just a Mom posts I wrote was for their “Getting Crafty”post.
Exercise:
Again, you’d think I’d be in “tip top” shape since I’ve been sharing workout posts recently, but I just I know I need to make an effort to get three to four workouts in a week (five if I really have the time, which is rare) to stay somewhat on top of my health. Having exercise as part of my routine has been important to me for quite a few years.
So far this year, I’ve shared my workouts for January and February.
Event Planning:
No real events, but I’ve recapped the kids’ birthday parties these past few years.
Like I mentioned in Part 2, a Not Just a Mompost recaps my current interests and hobbies.
I try to share experiences too when we travel, go to concerts, take part in traditions and more.
Thanks for letting me indulge on this trip down memory lane. I know I can’t check all the boxes on this “Lifestyle Blog” graphic, but it’s been fun to think about my posts and what I’ve shared over the past four and half years.
Again, I really appreciate all those who read, follow along, and engage with me on the blog.
This month’s topic is let’s look…what’s in our grocery cart.
Well, it’s pretty rare for me to do major grocery shopping in the store, so my “cart” is typically online via the Kroger app.
Before making my grocery list, I meal plan and write down any ingredients we need for dinners for the week. Then, I check out our pantry/cabinets and fridge to see what staples we need. Then, I head to our basement fridge to see what drinks and frozen items might need replenished. While in the basement, I also check on laundry detergent and paper supplies like paper towels and toilet paper.
Then, I place our weekly grocery pick up using the Kroger app.
Our list of regular items is pretty long but a few are:
Milk
Salad, green beans
Cottage cheese
Coffee or K-cups
Bread
Ground beef
Chicken
Eggs
Ice cream
Peanut butter and / or Nutella
Lunchmeat / cheese
Cheezits, Goldfish, chips
I also do a small round up at Trader Joe’s most weeks to pick up produce and a few things.
This was my cart on Monday after school:
Examples of things I buy weekly:
Fruit – always strawberries and apples…and then either grapes or cantaloupe
Egg bites for my lunches on Mondays and Tuesdays
Cheddar chicken sausage for lunch too
(There are usually a few other things I pick up too if needed, including fresh flowers in the spring and summer months)
Then, probably once or twice a month I have a bigger haul, and I get other odds and ends like frozen Jasmine rice, chips the kids want, mac and cheese, etc.
I’ve been frequenting Aldi somewhat regularly over the past few months. When I go to Aldi, the three things I’m looking for are:
Sweet Snack Select
Chicken Patties
Caramel Rice cakes
I only go to Aldi once a month or so, and just pick up these “staples” and other odds and ends I might want to try.
The price of groceries always blows my mind. I know I’m feeding two teens, and they are always hungry, but it sure adds up. When my dad visits, he opens the cabinets and says, “Is there a chip you DON’T buy?” haha
Again, teens.
I truly don’t know how large families…or moms of all boys do it!
I try to be conscious of price, and plan our meals, but we still end up throwing food away every week which is never my intention when buying groceries.
We probably spend $150/week at Kroger and then $25-$50 more at Trader Joe’s every week. We don’t shop at Sam’s or Costco…It’s just not convenient for us.
So, that’s a look at what’s in my grocery cart(s)!
Thanks for the love yesterday when I shared my 1,000th post. It definitely feels like a fun blogging milestone. Today, I’m linking up with Joanne for Talking About it Tuesdays…
…to continue discussing…
Today, I’m looking at the next ten blog categories and sharing posts about most of them.
Interior Design:
On the website, I have “Home Updates” and “Home Decor” tabs. In the spring of 2020, when I had a little more time on my hands, I went through my house room by room and showed how we updated it. I shared many “Tuesday Transformation” posts. Now, we’ve been here almost ten years, and there’s so much I’d still like to do…or even update again!
I’ve also shared smaller changes, like a couple of years ago, when we added ship lap to our living room wall.
Hobbies and Interests:
I’ve written about a few interests and hobbies through the years. You know I love reading, and I guess right now I’m in the phase of life where my main hobby is watching my kids do what they love to do. I wrote about those two things, and a few other ideas, in a Not Just a Mom post last year.
Favorite Products:
I’d say my most popular posts are when I share Amazon favorites! Of course, I have an Amazon tab on the website.
This month, I’ve made it a daily point to share an Amazon favorite in my Instagram stories. Then, I add the product to my Amazon Instagram highlight. It’s been a fun goal for me to keep showcasing things I’m buying and then saving them in one place.
In my Friday Favorites posts, I typically throw in a few favorite products or clothing items from time to time. As I mentioned in yesterday’s posts, I’ve shared my favorite Dime Beauty and Seint products.
Travel:
We go on a few trips a year, and I love having these posts as a “scrapbook” of sorts with the memories. There’s a “Travel” tab on the website. Our most recent “travel” was to Cincinnati a couple of weeks ago, but I’ve also recapped summer vacations, fall break trips, and even a look at what states I’ve visited. That was one of my favorite posts to write.
Technology:
I’m not much of an an expert on technology. I’ve written a couple of posts about favorite apps like the Cozi app. One Not Just a Mompost was about our favorite phone apps. I always love seeing what others have to say. I’m sure I’m missing out on the latest technology!
Local Activities:
I wrote a Lexington post a couple of years ago, and it was another favorite post that I’ve put together.
When the we do yearly traditions like going to Keeneland or the pumpkin patch, I tend to recap those fun events too.
The first week of May is always a busy time in Kentucky. It’s all about Oaks and Derby!
Cooking/Cookware:
Under the “Meals and Recipes” tab, I’ve shared quite a few “Monday Meal” ideas. Truly, there aren’t many recipes that I’ve created on my own, but I love sharing meals my family enjoys. Plus, o can look back on them for dinner ideas when I’m in a rut 😉
Pumpkin Penne Pasta and Corned Beef, Cabbage, and Irish Soda Bread are my two favorite recipes to highlight.
I’ve shared some Instant Pot recipes, but I actually donated my Instant Pot when I did a good kitchen purge after Christmas.
I can’t live without my slow cooker, and I use it at least once a week.
My new favorite gadget is my egg cooker. I make six perfect hard boiled eggs every week now!
Baking:
Oh! We love to bake. I’ve always loved to bake, and so has Hadley. Just think weekend, Hayden decided he wanted to learn how to make the box of brownies and Krusteaz cinnamon swirl cake. Now, of course, those are not home made, but at least he’s interested in baking for himself!
There’s a “Delish Desserts” tab with anything from seasonal desserts to other faves like Graham Cracker Pudding recipe.
Like I mentioned in yesterday’s post, earlier this year, I shared twelve desserts we made last year.
Entreprenuerhsip:
I’m not very entrepreneurial, but I do share my Amazon buys every month thanks to Tanya’s link up. Being an Amazon Associate means I make a small commission.
Truly, just yesterday, I received my monthly earnings gift card, and I used it to finish buying a couple of things for the kids’ Easter baskets. I appreciate the support of my blog, whether it’s big or small!
Book Reviews:
Some of my favorite posts to write are my monthly book reviews as well as the end of the year book post where I share my Top 5 books of the year. Reading is one of my favorite things to do.
On my Instagram page, I’ve added a highlight with book trackers for anyone to use. Thanks to a reader’s idea (hi, Christina!), I have a highlight of the books I’ve read so far this year. I can’t believe I haven’t thought of that idea before now.
It’s a big day over here at Show Me and Sweet Tea…Today is my 1,000th blog post!
Who knew when I started this blog in August of 2019 that I’d have enough to say to write 999 posts + today’s post?!
I’m linking up with the Hello Monday ladies, Sarah and Holly, to share my thoughts.
I saw this graphic on Pinterest recently.
Honestly, the word “lifestyle” kind of made me cringe. I don’t know why. I’m just living my life and sharing, but not trying to tell you how to live your life. haha
That being said, I really can check so many boxes on this list.
You know I love a recap of sorts…so today I’m going to share and link back to some of the posts I’ve written that would fall under the first ten categories.
Personal Style/Fashion:
I don’t do it often, but I’ve shared some “What I Wore Wednesday” posts. Of course, I share other clothes that I love…mostly from Amazon, Target, and Shop Style Your Senses.
Beauty:
When I first think of “beauty,” I first think of skincare, but that’s it’s own topic!
I’ve been using Seint makeup for about a year and a half. I’m a creature of habit, so I haven’t really changed my makeup routine at all.
So, I think I’ve only written one Seint post, but I really love these makeup products.
Hadley shared her “heatless curl” hair tutorial last summer, and it was one of my favorite posts to share.
Spirituality:
Just by nature, I’m pretty private with my faith, but just recently, I’ve shared about about my daily Bible routine. I hope to share more in the future.
Skincare:
I’ve been using Dime Beauty products longer than I’ve been using Seint, but, again, I think I’ve only written one post.
Dime Beauty products are reasonably priced, have clean ingredients, and are so easy and convenient to use.
Hadley recently wrote about her skincare routine. Again, I loved having her share her thoughts, and she really appreciated the sweet comments.
Productivity:
I try to be as productive as possible.
I use the calendar on my phone, I write our activities and dinners on a magnetic pad, I use a desk calendar at school and write my lesson plans in a planner.
I tell my family they should be thankful for my time management and planning skills. 😆
Personal Finance:
Oh…I don’t get much into finances on here, that’s because my least favorite thing to do is talk about money…unless it’s sharing a good deal.
I literally just had to ask Travis why my paycheck where my stipend was $100 more than the previous paycheck didn’t reflect $100 more in the net amount…he reminded me about taxes. Boooo!
One of our Not Just a Mom posts last year was about money saving tips.
Self-Care:
I think I share a lot about self-care on this blog. Anywhere from quiet time, to working out, to monthly facials, I think self-care is important, and I still fail at it!
The first Monthly Musingpost of 2024 was about self-care during the winter months.
Foods/Drinks/Dining:
I have a “Monday Meals” and “Delish Desserts” tab on the website, but I don’t feel like I add to them like I used to.
Last year, Hadley and I made a dessert a month, and I shared that post in January.
I always try to share new recipes I’ve found or recap what we’ve eaten in the week if I think it’s something others will be interested in.
Wellness:
I share quite a bit about wellness…and, again, it’s still an area that I’m always working on improving.
At the end of 2023, I recapped the Bodi programs that I completed last year.
So far this year, I’ve recapped my January and FebruaryBodi workouts.
I’ve shared some goals like drinking more water, getting in more steps, and eating more protein.
Recently, I’ve started using these essential oil sticks (Awaken // Sleep) in the morning and before bed. They’ve been an easy addition to my wellness routine.
Mental Health:
I guess I haven’t really written a post on mental health, but I think I reference it when I share about my morning routine, taking time for myself, working out, quiet time, blogging, and more.
Some of my Enneagram posts, tie in with mental health because it’s about better understanding others and how they might think, feel or react.
Some thoughts:
I’ve really enjoyed blogging over these past four and a half years. I still truly wish I’d started a blog when I’d first thought about it years before 2019.
Lately, it has felt like I haven’t had as much time and energy to give to it. I’m wondering if this is just a phase, where I’m at in life, or if I’m running out of steam. (I hope not!)
August 4th will mark five years of SM&ST, and I’d love to continue writing and sharing. I have felt a bit of “shift” recently just knowing my kids are getting older. They don’t mind the blog, but I do try to be very intentional with what I share. I’m wondering next year, with them being in high school, how much of that I will continue to share. I guess time will tell.
I’m also trying to navigate blog post ideas that aren’t just about the kids or what we are up to as a family. I’d like to dig a little deeper into other topics.
For any bloggers already in this “phase of life,” I’m open to advice and ideas. Also, if there are certain topics that I already share, and you look forward to those posts, let me know that too. Let me know what you want to hear about from me! I’m open to suggestions.
Through this blog, I’ve connected with so many readers, chatted with other bloggers, participated (and co-hosted) in link ups, and I’m an Amazon associate.
I hope to continue this recap of “lifestyle blog” topics throughout the week if I have time. It’s been fun to look back on these posts.
Thank you for showing up and reading my posts. Commenting on those posts also means the world to me. I try my best to respond to everyone!
I hope you have a great start to your week.

How was your week? Ours was good, and it’s really starting to feel like the slide into spring break time of the year. We still have a couple of weeks to go, but we can do it. (At least that’s what I’m telling myself)
This week was different for me because on Tuesday, all of our sophomores and juniors took the ACT, so it was a busy day at school. Then, my allergies caught up with me and turned into a sinus infection, so I was sick on Wednesday. Today, teachers have a work day, but the students get the day off. It was just a different kind of week, and I felt like this:
As always, I’m linking up with Andrea for this week’s Friday Favorites.
Here are some favorites from the week:
Our weekend trip to Cincinnati was a good one. The Bailey Zimmerman concert was fun, and we enjoyed the pretty city and good food while we were there too.
Breakfast on the way out of town was a favorite as well. So many delicious options.
How cute is this Walmart $5 votive candle holder? I made a quick Walmart trip last weekend, and saw this egg nest votive and couldn’t resist…buying two! I can’t find it on Walmart.com, but they were in the seasonal/dollar section when you first walk in the door. I know all Walmarts are different…haha…but kind of like the Target “dollar spot” area…but of Walmart.
Anyway, I “styled” them two ways. One on the kitchen table with a flameless candle and “grass” that I use for the kids’ Easter baskets.
In the living room, I used the other one with a small votive candle that I picked up at Ikea.
The reason I went to Walmart was to look for these Joy Spun pjs. They come in so many cute patterns, the material is so soft, and they are perfect for spring/summer.
I 10/10 recommend.
I change out my candles seasonally, and I have a shelf in our hall closet where I keep my candles. I received this one (Lavender Marshmallow) during the Christmas secret Santa exchange with Trav’s family. I knew it would be the perfect springtime candle, so I put it away until now.
Did you know that when burning your candle for the first time, you are supposed to burn it for the length of time as is the width ? So, this one is a little over three inches wide, so I burned it for three hours the first time.
I guess this just ensures that the candle starts off being burned evenly? And…when I said, “did you know that you are supposed to…” I think I saw this tip on TikTok. haha
Full Swing season 2 is out, and I love it. I like reality TV, but I especially like the shows that follow athletes. I’ve watched the first few episodes this week.
I know I’ve shared these Amazon eye gels/masks before, but only this week did I read the tip on the package about putting them in the fridge for extra soothing. Especially with my sinus issues this week, the extra cool eye gels in the morning have been life changing!!
This weekend, we’ll be indulging in favorite St. Patrick’s Day recipes…like “leprechaun” pancakes…
Last week, Hadley was so excited because she’d worked hard and earned a great grade on her Algebra 1 exam. She said, “Mom, I am eating up school…& leaving no crumbs.” 😆
We’re proud of how hard she is working, and she is just so funny sometimes.
Favorite Mom Meme:
Lack of time management (x 2) might be what sends me over the edge. Ugh.
What are your weekend plans? Hadley has a volleyball tournament. She hasn’t had one in about a month, and while it makes for a hectic weekend, I’ve missed watching her play.
I’m sure Trav and Hayden will be glued to the TV cheering for the CATS in the SEC tournament.
Between our busy weekend and the time change, I feel like I’m still recovering!
Today, I’m sharing about our weekend trip to Cincinnati filled with a stop at IKEA, the kids’ first concert, and good food and fun.
Hadley loves country singer Bailey Zimmerman. Last summer, Travis texted me that he got tickets for the BZ concert in Cinci in March. We decided to hold off telling Hadley about the concert until closer to time.
A couple of months ago, she had to make the choice about traveling with her volleyball team this past weekend or going to the concert. Well, she didn’t know she’d have to make a choice…haha…but when we told her about the concert, she was so excited. Travis was able to snag a fourth ticket, so Hayden could come too.
After her “room refresh,” I had a couple of things to return to IKEA, so we held on to them until this past weekend knowing that would be a good time to make the returns.
Hayden had a friend’s birthday party on Sunday, so we knew we’d have to get up and head back on Sunday…so we decided to spend most of the day Saturday in Cinci.
We left our house around 11:00, and drove to West Chester, OH to go to IKEA. We got there around 1:00, and ate at Panera before heading into IKEA.
I love IKEA, and I wish there was one closer. Since we don’t go very often, I do like to walk the whole store to look at designs and see what they have.
So, Travis went and did the returns while the kids and I started walking around.
We’d also hoped to pick up the last piece for her room, but it wasn’t in stock. I’d checked the IKEA app before we made the trip, but I’d hoped we’d luck into the cabinet, but we were making the trip anyway. I actually got a text alert that it will be in stock soon, so maybe we can get it delivered if that’s still what we want to do.
It was nice to see it (the one on the left) in person.
Anyway, we made a few small purchases, and then we headed to the hotel.
We stayed in downtown Cinci near the concert venue. We had a pretty view out the window.
Right as we arrived at the hotel, the UK/Tennessee basketball game was starting, so we just hung out and watched the game in our room.
Then, we walked a few blocks to the Yard House for dinner before walking to the Andrew J. Brady Music Center for the concert.
It was a short and pretty walk!
There were two opening acts before Bailey Zimmerman. We caught the last couple of songs of Brandon Wisham before Josh Ross took the stage. We actually knew a couple of his songs, and he was so good. I bet he will be big time soon! He’s got a Morgan Wallen/Eric Church vibe to him.
Trav took our pic in between sets.
….and then it was time for BZ to perform. This is the “Religiously” tour, and that, of course, was his first song.
We all had a really great time (even though no picture proof that Travis and Hayden were with us…haha), and it was a fun venue.
I really liked his closing message as he encouraged the audience :
You don’t get anywhere without working your a$$ off.
You have to believe in yourself before others can believe in you.
God is good all the time.
He was finished performing around 11:00, and we started the walk back to the hotel. The hotel had a market open 24/7, and the kids were hungry, so we picked up a few snacks before bed.
Shew! The time change….we did sleep until around 8:00, and the kids slept longer. We didn’t want to rush them, but we wanted to get home by 12:30 or so.
We did make a pit stop at a bakery, Paris Baguette Pastry Cafe, that we’d walked past on the way to the concert. You pick up a tray and tongs, and could pick up whatever pastries you want to buy.
This was our load:
(I chose the chocolate crossiant…and a coffee!)
…their desserts looked delish too.
We got in the car and headed home.
Overall, I think Bailey Zimmerman was the perfect first concert for the kids since we all enjoy his music. I know they’ll remember it.
My first concert was Billy Joel. I was supposed to see him in 1994, but the concert was postponed until the next year because his wife, Christie Brinkley, was in a helicopter crash. He rescheduled the concert, so he could be with her while she recovered. I hadn’t thought about that concert memory in a long time!
