Friday Favorites {#92}

Hello! How was your week? We had a good one, but the first couple of days just seemed so difficult getting back into the swing of things.

Today, I’m linking up Erika and Andrea for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Here are some of my recent favorites:

I ordered this sweater from Walmart, and I love it. It’s soft, cozy, and a great price. I ordered it in “Winter White.” I wore it to school this week with black pants and flats, but I’ve also worn it with leggings and sneakers!

One of my favorite comedians is coming to town, and I’m so excited. A few girlfriends and I snagged some tickets. She was in Cincinnati last month, and I was bummed I didn’t go. Then, she released more tickets! I’m so excited.

I finished watching Maid on Netflix, and it was so good. I read the book last year, and actually put it on my Top 5 Reads for 2020 list. Just like the book, I teared up. The acting was fantastic. Andie MacDowell and Margaret Qualley were out of this world amazing. (Did you know Margaret is Andie’s daughter?) I highly recommend the book and the series.

Homer snuggles are another favorite. I think he missed us while we were gone over Thanksgiving. He snuggled right up to Travis when we got home on Saturday.

I have a couple of new ornaments for the tree, and they are both my favorites.

My friend brought me this Betty White ornament along with a can of Trader Joe’s Step Up to the Bar mix. My fave!

My mom cross stitched this ornament, and I love it.

School photos came in and I can’t get over how much older my kids look! They missed the first photo day when they were home with Covid. Thankfully, they made it to the make up picture day.

I can’t believe what a difference (a little over) six months can make.

These 5th grade pics were taken in late March.

Also, our favorite gift to give arrived yesterday. I feel ok sharing this because I think by now my family knows they will receive this calendar 😉 Every year, I order this stand up desk calendar for my parents, my Gma, and my aunt. Then, I order a couple of extra for my desk at school and one for my brother’s family. The calendar used to just be filled with my kids’ photos, but now it’s a mix of my kids and my brother’s kids. We also include a few group photos of them every year like at Halloween and at Christmas.

Vistaprint has so many cute design options for the calendars and the discount code is amazing. Also, I ordered these on Monday, and they arrived yesterday. No shipping delay!

I just thought I’d share in case you are in need of a small personalized gift or stocking stuffer.

Favorite Mom Meme:

This. On repeat. I swear no matter how hard I try, I’m always running late!

Bonus Fave: Flashback Friday:

This sweet little basketball memory popped up from 2018. Travis was Hadley’s basketball coach, and it was such a fun season. The Fire went on to win the championship game in the tournament!

Weekly Recap:

I was busy with posts this week!

I hope you have a great weekend. I hope we can finally get a tree for the living room, and we have a Christmas party to attend…oh! and basketball. There’s always some kind of game to attend!

See you back here Monday!

November Sentence a Day

Hello! Well, I feel like I blinked and November was over! I’ve said before that November is a very hectic month for us as Travis is very busy with work, we also have the kids’ birthday and holiday travel on top of our regular school and activity schedule.

I always like looking back on the month to see what we’ve been up to. That being said, some days, I completely forgot to take a photo!

Here we go…

11.1.21

This was the Monday after Halloween, so we had school, kids’ activities, and I stayed up to watch Chiefs on MNF because we didn’t have school the next day. {I started the month off forgetting to take photo for the day!} haha

11.2.21

Since we didn’t have school, I put up Christmas trees in living room and sun room, and then went to Hayden’s basketball game that evening.

11.3.21

After school, I picked up books at library; we didn’t have any evening activities, so I was able to finish Not a Happy Family.

11.4.21

We had a busy afternoon and evening with kids’ activities, but I was able to squeeze in my monthly facial which is always a treat!

11.5.21

After school I ran errands, but then I got some quiet time in the evening to unwind and watch tv while Travis took the kids and friends to the middle school basketball game.

11.6.21

It was a cold day, but Hayden had his middle school national cross country race and then we spent the rest of the day at home.

11.7.21

This was Daylight Savings Sunday and we went to church, I ran errands (Old Navy, Target, Kroger- all curbside pickup), Hayden had basketball game, and we had a favorite soup for dinner.

11.8.21

I had a pretty late afternoon at school, the kids had evening activities, and I made another favorite for dinner. (Shay’s Easy Skillet Enchiladas)

11.9.21

With no evening activities after school, I had time to go to Ulta with Hadley, and then I watched Holiday Baking Championship.

11.10.21

After school, we had a quick dinner, and I was excited to settle in and watch the CMA awards.

11.11.21

The weather was so rainy, and I was able to run to Trader Joe’s between picking the kids up from evening activities.

11.12.21

The 12th was a Friday, and Hadley went to a friend’s overnight birthday party, and I had a lowkey night at home.

11.13.21

On the 13th, the kids ran in the memorial race in memory of Trav’s dad; it was a cold night, but an amazing event.

11.14.21

On Sunday, we went to church, had grocery pick up, I made a pumpkin pie, and then went to Hayden’s basketball game.

11.15.21

After school, Hadley danced at the girls basketball game, and then Hayden worked on his Martin Luther King, Jr. essay.

11.16.21

After school, I made a new recipe for dinner, it was Hadley’s turn to work on her MLK essay while Travis and Hayden went to UK basketball game.

11.17.21

On the 17th, Hadley danced at another basketball game, and then we had a quick dinner before the kids worked on some homework.

Hayden had basketball and Hadley had dance, so Travis and I had impromptu dinner out.

11.19.21

After school, we celebrated the kids with a party at Sky Zone followed by pizza.

11.20.21

The kids turned 12, Hayden had a basketball tournament game, I stopped by Trader Joe’s, and we finished the day with some cake!

11.30.21

After school, the kids had a couple of activities, and we ended our day at my school’s basketball game.

Shew! What a month. We were busy with many activities and so much to celebrate.

November: What I’ve Been Reading

Hello! Happy December 1st! I can’t believe it’s already December. Sometimes I feel like 2021 has moved at a snail’s pace, and other times I feel like it’s flown by.

Today, I’m sharing the books I read this month.

This month I read:

{As always, book summaries are from Goodreads…}

Not a Happy Family:

Summary:

In this family, everyone is keeping secrets–especially the dead. Brecken Hill in upstate New York is an expensive place to live. You have to be rich to have a house there. And they don’t come much richer than Fred and Sheila Merton. But even all their money can’t protect them when a killer comes to call. The Mertons are brutally murdered the night after an Easter Dinner with their three adult kids. Who, of course, are devastated.

Or are they? They each stand to inherit millions. They were never a happy family, thanks to their capricious father and neglectful mother, but perhaps one of them is more disturbed than anyone knew. Did one of them snap after that dreadful evening? Or was it someone else that night who crept in with the worst of intentions? It must be. After all, if one of your siblings was a psychopath, you’d know.

Quick Thoughts:

This book had pretty short chapters, and there was an interesting dynamic between the siblings. All three of kids had motive for killing their parents because they’d all inherit the money, so, as a reader, I didn’t feel like they were very likeable. The ending fell a little flat for me because I expected there would be more of a twist.

Rating:

4 stars but maybe more like 3.5 because of the ending.

Christmas in Peachtree Bluff:

Summary:

When the Murphy women are in trouble, they always know they can turn to their mother, Ansley. So when eldest daughter Caroline and her husband, James, announce they are divorcing—and fifteen-year-old daughter Vivi acts out in response—Caroline, at her wits end, can’t think of anything to do besides leave her with Ansley in Peachtree Bluff for the holidays. After all, how much trouble can one teenager get into on a tiny island?

Quite a lot, as it turns out.

As the “storm of the century” heads toward Peachtree Bluff, Ansley and her husband, Jack, with Vivi in tow, are grateful they’re planning to leave for the trip of a lifetime. But Vivi’s recklessness forces the trio to shelter in place during the worst hurricane Peachtree has ever seen. With no power, no provisions, and the water rising, the circumstances become dire very quickly…and the Murphy sisters, who evacuated to New York, soon realize it’s up to them to conduct a rescue mission. With the bridges closed and no way to access Peachtree Bluff by land or air, they set sail on Caroline’s boat, The Starlite Sisters, determined to rebuild their beloved town—as well as their family.

In “pitch-perfect tones” (Publishers Weekly) and written with her signature Southern charm, New York Times bestselling author Kristy Woodson Harvey explores the magic of Christmas, the power of forgiveness, and the importance of family in a tale that reminds us that, no matter the circumstances, home is always where we belong—especially during the holidays.

Quick Thoughts:

I loved this book so much. (I actually won the book from a Goodreads giveaway!) It was the perfect way to start the holiday season. I’ve read the entire Peachtree series, and this book felt like such a bonus! The family relationship is so special. The sisters, along their mother Ansley, all remain close through the challenges in life whether it’s death, divorce, or a hurricane. The town seems so charming and is the perfect backdrop to tell this Christmas story. This is definitely a must read this holiday season.

Rating:

The Girls in the Stilt House:

Summary:

Ada promised herself she would never go back to the Trace, to her hard life on the swamp and her harsh father. But now, after running away to Baton Rouge and briefly knowing a different kind of life, she finds herself with nowhere to go but back home. And she knows there will be a price to pay with her father.

Matilda, daughter of a sharecropper, is from the other side of the Trace. Doing what she can to protect her family from the whims and demands of some particularly callous locals is an ongoing struggle. She forms a plan to go north, to pack up the secrets she’s holding about her life in the South and hang them on the line for all to see in Ohio.

As the two girls are drawn deeper into a dangerous world of bootleggers and moral corruption, they must come to terms with the complexities of their tenuous bond and a hidden past that links them in ways that could cost them their lives

Quick Thoughts:

Like Not a Happy Family, I got this book suggestion from Shay and Erika. I haven’t listened to their podcast with their thoughts on it because I only just finished it Monday, but I loved this book. I’d never heard of it before which was a bonus because I didn’t know anything going into reading it.

This story, set in Mississippi in the 1920s, grabbed my attention from the first page. The chapters focused on Matilda and Ada who were both strong and resilient women. Their relationship was distant at first, but then they grew to really rely on each other even as they kept their guards up. This book had the loneliness of Crawdads, the heartache of Four Winds, the solidarity of The Giver of Stars, and the empowerment of all.

These ladies will have you pulling for them from the first page. As Ada said, “You find a way, is what you do.”

This book is definitely a top read for me in 2021.

Rating:

I set a goal to read 40 books this year. I thought I may read more after reading quite a few this summer, but then I had a couple of slow months. At this point, I’ve read 37 books in 2021. So, I hope to meet my goal by wrapping up the year with Christmas reads.

Christmas Reads:

Like last December, I’m going to only read Christmas books this month.

Here are my Christmas book suggestions from previous years:

December is always a great time to read more light-hearted books, and I’m looking forward to doing so by the twinkle of my Christmas tree.

Tomorrow, I’m recapping the month of November with my Sentence a Day post.

Take care and happy reading!

Thanksgiving Recap

Hi! I hope your week is off to a great start.

Today, I’m recapping our Thanksgiving break because we had such a good time visiting family in Kansas City.

Typically, if we go to KC for Thanksgiving, we leave Tuesday after school and drive to St. Louis before finishing the drive on Wednesday. Well, this year, we had the whole week off, so we were able to drive the entire way on Tuesday. We arrived early evening, stretched our legs at my dad’s, checked in to our hotel and then had dinner at my mom’s house.

Wednesday

On Wednesday morning, we had a quick bite to eat at the hotel before the kids went for a workout with my mom and her friends. While the kids were with her, Travis and I went for a walk.

such a pretty view from our hotel.

Then, we met my mom, Gma, and my brother’s family for brunch. I got the avocado toast, and it was so good.

Then, we headed to visit with my dad, the kids played outside a bit and then we went back to the hotel to let the kids burn off more energy and swim.

We had pizza for dinner before heading back to the hotel.

It looked so pretty at night with the Christmas decorations.

Then, we hung out at the hotel and enjoyed a drink while the kids played ping pong.

Thursday:

We all slept in a bit before having breakfast. We watched some of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade before packing up.

We hung out at my mom’s house for a few hours. I went to the grocery store to pick up some ingredients for the salad I was making. While I was out, Travis asked for a pop, so I stopped in my favorite convenience stores, Quik Trip, for drinks for us.

*I know it may sound silly, but whenever I see the first QT once we cross into Missouri, I always feel close to home.

I made this salad, and it was so good. (I added goat cheese to it…my fave!)

We snapped a few photos before heading to my cousin’s house in the afternoon for Thanksgiving dinner.

It was nice having my brother and his family in town too.

My cousin always outdoes herself with her tablescape(s).

We always look forward to the chocolate turkeys at our place settings.

We ate so much and had lots of fun catching up with family who we only see once a year, at best!

Friday:

On Friday, we were up rather early because we had tickets to tour the Christmas displays at Union Station. We met my mom, my brother and his family there. We’ve been to Union Station a few times when we visit, but I think this is the first time I’ve been at Thanksgiving/Christmas.

The displays were so pretty.

They had lots of fun photo opportunities.

Hayden always loves the trains! It was sweet to see him so mesmerized just like when he was a little boy.

Santa was even roaming around, so we got to briefly visit with him.

Santa said this photo would be funny, and he was right!

After seeing Santa, we checked out more displays.

Then, the kids obliged for the traditional cousin Christmas photo.

I love this one of my two…

and this one of my mom with her grands.

After the photos, we hit up one of the stores because the kids wanted new KC/Chiefs gear, and that was a perfect Christmas gift for them from my mom.

Then we went and had BBQ. Travis had requested BBQ on this visit, and Gates didn’t disappoint!

My kids love ribs…especially Hadley.

**She split this plate of ribs with Hayden.

That afternoon, the kids played outside a bit. I went for a walk while Hadley and Layla played. Then, we watched some of the MIZZOU football game. (*they lost…insert sad face)

We went to my mom’s for our traditional turkey rice soup for dinner. My Gma and aunt came over too.

Then, we stopped by the Magic Tree before heading back to pack up to head out Saturday morning.

It was a really great visit. We were able to hang out with family, the kids had lots of time to play, we enjoyed great food, and saw some festive displays.

It’s weird when two places feel like home. It means you are always missing something or someone. I always enjoy my time in KC and wish I could get there more often. Thankfully, my family visits us when they can.

I’m so thankful that my kids are growing up with some KC memories which I hold close to my heart too.

See you back here tomorrow. I’m sharing the books I read in November!

Monday Memes

Hello! How was your Thankgiving break? We had a great one. An added bonus was that we had an entire week off.

We started break celebrating the kids’ with their birthday party,

followed by their birthday,

and then we headed to KC to see family for Thanksgiving.

I can’t believe it’s almost December. Where has the month of November gone? Honestly, November is the craziest month for me with Travis working so much, the kids’ birthday, and then Thanksgiving travel. December will be pretty hectic as well, but it never feels as crazy as November does for me.

Here are a few memes that I saw this month that made me laugh!

1.

In the spirit of the holidays, I had to share this one. Green bean casserole is one of my holiday faves!

2.

This will especially be me today!

3.

I feel seen.

4.

Every. Single. Time.

5.

‘Tis the season to be tired!

6.

My work friends and I have shared this meme with each other and always laugh because we can relate!

7.

Target is the place to be!

8.

Yep!

9.

So timely, and literally made me laugh out loud!

10.

This happens in my kitchen often. Of course, we have the one drawer with an item or two that just don’t fit. I always find this out when I’m in a rush to make dinner!

I hope you have a great week.

Unfortunately, I feel like this is me today: 😂

Re-entry is always tough, but I’m going to make the most of the day. My “to-do” list isn’t giving me much of a choice 😉

Gift Ideas

…for tweens?

Since the kids just had their birthday, I thought I’d share my purchases for them.

For the kids’ birthday, I try to stick with a plan. I typically buy a book for them to read, Christmas pjs, something to wear/need and couple of “wants” as well.

These are the gifts I bought for their 12th birthday.

Hayden:

I thought these golf balls were so fun. He won’t be playing golf until the spring, but since he loves all the sports, I figured these would be perfect for him.

Of course, Hayden loves baseball and reading, so I thought this book would be perfect for him.

This Xbox game was literally the only thing Hayden asked for as a birthday gift. I got it on sale at Target for $30. That’s not the current price, so I definitely got lucky and saved a few bucks.

I didn’t want to give up my Christmas PJ tradition just because the kids are getting older. I figured Hayden wouldn’t want a matching set, so I ordered these fleece pajama joggers for curbside pick up at Old Navy. There are lots of pattern options, and you can’t beat the price.

My kids, Hayden more than Hadley, love a Vineyard Vines t-shirt. I only buy VV when there is a sale. I snagged this t-shirt for Hayden at the end of the summer. While he will wear them to get my money’s worth, I still hate paying full price for an expensive t-shirt, so I keep my eye out for the sales.

Hadley:

Hadley is always pretty easy to buy for because she likes just about anything, but can be a bit picky about clothes.

Hadley loooovvvees popcorn. So, when Tina (to_mimishousewego) shared this popcorn popper, I knew Hadley would love it. Hadley had a friend spend the night on Saturday, and they used it to pop some popcorn before they watched a movie.

It was so easy to use, and I’m glad I got the bigger size because it popped enough for them to share with Travis 😉

The American Girl series has come in handy with great reference books through the years. Since Hadley is fresh off of passing her babysitting class, I thought this book would be perfect for her.

I picked up this nightgown for Hadley as her Christmas PJs. Even though the packaging said xs, when she tried it on, she realized the tag said xl! So, we returned it. While there, Hadley said she preferred the matching PJ set, so we went with that. I have last year’s version of this nightgown and love it.

(Looks like all of these plaid options are on sale through today!)

Pajama Nightgown
Pj set

Fun fact: I always pick myself up a pair of new Christmas pajamas, so I snagged this set on our trip to Target too.

PJ set

Hadley wears sweatshirts and leggings on repeat. There’s nothing wrong with that, but around the holidays, I do try to buy a couple of items that she could wear to church, family gatherings, or even to school. This sweater was cute, but on the shorter side, so we did return it.

The sweater is on sale for $10 right now.

She went with me to make the returns, and found this sweater that she loved:

Sweater

It’s on sale for ($17.50), and will be perfect with leggings and booties for Thanksgiving.

Guess what?! I have it in the coral color!

I can’t believe we are to the point where we like some of the same clothes. I warned her that I had the same sweater, and she still wanted it in the gray color.

Last but not least, I saw this candle shared on a few different gift guides. The delivery date was for December, so I went ahead and ordered it for Hadley for a Christmas gift. Well, it arrived pretty quickly, but I’m still saving it for a Christmas gift. I went ahead and opened it, and it’s so cute and smells so good! I think she will enjoy it when she opens it on Christmas day.

I know so many bloggers/influencers share gift guides, and sometimes I feel like there are so many that it can be overwhelming. These are just a few ideas of gifts my kids seemed to enjoy when opening them up on their birthday! A few of the ideas could work for adults too!

I’m going to take the rest of the week off from blogging to spend time with family! I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. I definitely am thankful for this community.

Take care,

Birthday Recap

Hello! Well, we’ve had a couple of twelve-year-olds in the house for a couple of days now, and not much has changed. When is it that they will start acting like they are 12? #askingforafriend

All kidding aside, they had a wonderful birthday full of fun with friends and lots of cake.

Here’s a recap of how we celebrated Hayden and Hadley turning the big 1-2!

On Friday, after school, I picked up a cookie cake for them from Great American Cookies. Their cookie cakes are the best and never disappoint.

Then, I picked the kids and a few of their friends up from school. We came home for a bit to wait for their other friends to arrive before heading to Sky Zone.

This was such an easy activity for them at this age, and a great way to burn some energy. We bought passes for them to jump for 1 and 1/2 hours which was the perfect amount of time.

While I’m sometimes sad at home quickly time seems to be flying by, I wasn’t sad about the fact that I got to just sit on the Sky Zone couch with Travis while the kids did their thing. I saw a few parents of little ones having to wear the orange Sky Zone socks and jump with their kids, and that’s a “no” for me at this point in my life 😉

Also, this age is so funny. These kids all pretty much know each other, but as soon as we arrived, the boys and girls split up. During the last thirty minutes or so, they started to all hang together. #tweenlife

After Sky Zone, we went to Grimaldis for pizza. This group of ten seemed to have so much fun. They talked, laughed, and acted silly. Hayden and Hadley opened their gifts while we waited on the pizza. Then, these kids crushed two huge pizzas!

Then, we sang Happy Birthday to them (actually, the entire restaurant ended up doing so), and they enjoyed the cookie cake.

Grimaldis is in a neat little shopping area, and even though it was 35 degrees outside, the kids wanted to go see the tree.

Of course, the girls couldn’t resist a good photo op…

or two…

before convincing the boys to join in for a group photo…

…or two!

(I really do love this group photo – great kids and a pretty back drop!)

Then, we divided and conquered with Travis taking the boys home while I dropped the girls off at their houses. We were home around 9:00, and it was a great evening filled with fun and friends!

November 20th:

The thing about having older kids whose birthday is on a Saturday is they sleep in which gave me a bit more time for set up. Travis went and got donuts while I put the finishing touches on their presents.

Then, it was time to celebrate them during breakfast.

They opened gifts and then went outside to see their birthday signs.

This sign gets me every time. This also means I’ve been a mom for 12 years, 144 months, and 4,382 days! Time is certainly flying by.

They obliged (barely) for the birthday balloon photo. They look so grown up!

Later in the evening, my brother and his family came over for cake! Cake with the cousins. What could be better?

One more “Happy Birthday to YOU!”

Then, they stayed for a bit to watch the MIZZOU game while Hayden, Travis, and cousin Wyatt went to Hayden’s basketball game. Hadley had a dear friend spend the night, so I took the girls to Target and then out for a quick dinner.

Mama was tired, and was counting the minutes until bedtime!

On Sunday, we met up with my brother-in-law’s family for hibachi. His son’s birthday was that day, so we had fun celebrating the cousins.

The kids had a great 24(+) hours filled with friends, fun and tons of cake! We’re certainly blessed that so many friends and family took the time to celebrate them with calls, texts, and attending their part(ies).

I have one more post this week, so I will see you back here tomorrow!

Monday Meals: Turkey Rice Soup

Hello and Happy Monday! How was your weekend? We had a great but busy one mostly filled with celebrating Hayden and Hadley turning 12. More about that tomorrow!

Today, I’m sharing one of my favorite recipes: Turkey Rice Soup.

We’ve been making this for years. It’s actually a recipe that we got from my high school boyfriend’s dad way back in 1997! It’s the perfect way to use up some leftover turkey the day after Thanksgiving!

Ingredients:

  • 1 can cream of chicken soup
  • 1 can cream of celery soup
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 can chicken broth
  • 4 cans of water
  • 1/2 an onion, chopped
  • 1-2 c. shredded carrots
  • 2 c. uncooked rice + a little bit more
  • leftover shredded turkey
  • Creole spice (I usually use the Tony Chachere brand)

Instructions:

  • Saute’ the chopped onions in some oil until soft.
  • Add in soups + cans of water and heat for a few minutes.
  • Add in the turkey and shredded carrots. Stir to combine.
  • Pour in 2 cups of rice, and I add in a little bit more rice.
  • Top the ingredients with Creole spice plus a bit more. Stir.
  • Cook for 20-30 minutes.
  • Enjoy!

We make this soup every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I also make it a few other times in the winter and use shredded chicken.

If you make this, tag me on Instagram!

I can’t tell you how much this day off is needed. I was a big slacker this weekend on household chores and errands.

I hope you have a great week.

Friday Favorites {#91}: The Twins Turn Twelve

Hello and Happy Friday! How was your week? We had a good, but hectic one. The kids had their activities, but they also had quite a few school assignments to complete like a science project proposal and essay. We just had to use our evening time very wisely to meet these deadlines in between activities.

As always, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites posts.

Well, this post is all about two of my favorites. Today, I’m celebrating them as they turn TWELVE tomorrow. Where has the time gone?

Hayden…

I’m not sure if it’s the five inches you’ve grown this year or the fact that you now wear contacts, but you’ve grown into quite the young man this year.

I cherish the “love you” text messages.

You are a quiet kid with a kind heart. You’re loyal to the bone whether it’s cheering for UK or being a great friend.

Your determination, competitive spirit, and quiet leadership are qualities that I admire in you.

I pray that you know we’ll always be here for you, and that dad and I are your biggest fans.

This next year I know you’ll continue to grow, challenge yourself, and mature. Maybe you’ll figure out where to put those dirty clothes 😉

I hope you have the best year yet. Can’t wait to celebrate you!

Hadley…

You are blossoming into a young lady right before our very eyes. Your silly sense of humor and caring heart are such inspiring qualities.

You’ve made the transition to middle school seamlessly. It doesn’t surprise me that you’ve made friends while holding on to your elementary friendships as well.

It’s a joy to watch you dance, and your grace is inspiring.

You care for others and have an innate ability to know just the moment that I need a hug.

I pray that you know we’ll always be here for you, and that dad and I are your biggest fans.

This next year, I know you’ll continue to make friends, follow your heart, and have a positive attitude with everything that you do. Maybe you’ll figure out how to cut your morning routine time in half? Hayden would really appreciate it 😉

I hope you have the best year yet. Can’t wait to celebrate you!

xo xo,

Mom

Monthly Musings

Hello! How’s your week been? I’m so happy that it’s Thursday. We are so close to the weekend!

Since Thanksgiving is next Thursday, Patty and Holly are doing their Monthly Musings link up today, and I’m joining them!

This month’s topic is: Holiday Preview 2021

1. Share your favorite holiday traditions:

We have so many favorite traditions like:

Seeing Santa,

attending Christmas parties,

and baking cookies.

We also go to the Horse Park lights, shop for the Angel Tree, and I hold on to the time honored tradition of mothers making their kids dress up for Christmas cards.

2. Do you see any holiday lights? Driving tour, park, festival?

I’ve shared before that as a kid, most holidays seasons we drove the park lights. Once I moved to Lexington, Travis and I started that tradition as well by going to Southern Lights at the Kentucky Horse Park. The only year we’ve missed since 2004 is 2009 when we had two one month olds!

There’s also a house in Lexington that a must to drive by.

Then, last year we went to Mustard Seed Hill for the first time, and it was a fun experience.

3. Favorite holiday recipe?

We do lots of baking around the holidays, but Shay’s Peppermint Mocha Bundt Cake is my fave! I make for dessert for our Christmas dinner at home every year.

4. Must have holiday fashion staples?

I’m not much of a fashionista, but I love a plaid shirt!

5. Any special or extra festive plans this year?

I don’t think we have anything extra planned. We are pretty good about traditions, but we’ll see what pops up in December.

6. Best holiday planning tip?

Make a list and check it twice! As far as gifts are concerned, I started keeping a note on my phone for gift ideas all year long. Also, last year was the first year that I shared an Amazon list with family for ideas for the kids. That worked out nicely because once a gift was purchased, it was taken off the list.

7. Favorite holiday movie?

I love watching Home Alone. I have on my list for us to watch the new Home Alone (Home Sweet Home Alone) at some point in December or even after the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

As a tradition, we always watch A Christmas Story on Christmas day. I can’t wait.

8. Die Hard…Christmas movie or not?

I’ve never seen it, so I have no clue! Randomly, when I was watch Love Hard last week, this was a topic in the movie!

9. Tree/decorations up before or after Thanksgiving?

I will let this recent picture speak for my answer!

Really though, last year was the first year I put up the pencil tree in November. This year, I put up two pencil trees, one in the sun room and one in the living room until we get our real tree after Thanksgiving.

I do try to decorate for Christmas the weekend before Thanksgiving because it takes so much effort. That being said, I’m not sure if I will meet that goal this year as this upcoming weekend is proving to be a busy one.

10. Do you celebrate other holidays in December?

No, but my kids went to a pretty diverse elementary school, and during those years, their teachers would do units of study on other cultures and holidays. I always loved hearing my kids share what they learned during that time.

I love the Monthly Musing link up. I can’t wait to see how others answered too!

See you back here tomorrow for a very special Friday Favorites.
