Hello and happy Wednesday!

I’m so happy that it’s September, but I need the temps to start acting like it. We have heat advisories when really I wish I could wear my favorite cardigan and sip a latte.

Oh well, the time will come!

Since it’s the first Wednesday of the month, I’m linking up with Amy for…

Adjusting to:

I’d say I’m still adjusting to the back to school routine. The good news is that now I’m to the point where I don’t feel like I need a nap at the end of every day. That’s progress, right?!

Baking/Cooking:

It’s too hot to bake! haha

The kids did decorate cookies that my mom had baked last time she visited.

As far as cooking is concerned, I still plan and make dinners, but I’ve started just planning three meals a week because I just never know who will be home or what people feel like eating. Sometimes the kids go to Chick-fil-a or Chipolte after school which means they aren’t super hungry. Hadley works a couple nights a week, and they’ve gone to a few school sporting events, so it’s just hard to plan.

Also, I can always do a pick up or delivery order mid-week if needed.

That being said, last week, Hadley texted Travis and me to say that she wanted to make shrimp alfredo for dinner that night. I was like, “Say less!” That evening, she shopped at Kroger and when we got home from Hayden’s baseball game and my nephew’s football game, she had dinner ready! I think she’s going to make it again this week and double the recipe this time.

Decorating:

While it’s probably too early to decorate for fall, I have started burning some fall candles. I tend to gravitate towards apple flavors in September and then pumpkin, cinnamon, and vanilla in October and November.

Balancing:

Of course with the school year starting, I’m back to juggling balancing school and home life. That being said, the first few weeks at school always feel unbalanced because there’s very little downtime during class time. I just mean, this is week five, and I’m finally getting to the point of having a few minutes to work at my desk while students are working independently.

Also, I feel like there are so many meetings at the start of the year. This year, since I’m in the Freshman Academy, we have a common plan with meetings every Monday. Then, we usually have department meetings during our planning periods on Tuesday. So, it just seems like I stay after school more at the start of the year.

Learning:

All my students’ names! I secretly think to myself, “If I know your name in the first few days, it’s probably not a good thing!” haha

To students, I always say, “Give me until Labor Day” as a general rule for learning the 130 student names. I noticed that last year it took me right up until Labor Day because that was our first year with block scheduling, so I was only seeing students every other day. Anyway, this is the third year I’ve had students make table tents where they write their name and one of their favorite things. This is mine:

I have not used the table tents this week, so I think I’m good with knowing my students’ names.

What are you currently up to?

I hope everyone is currently stay cool…wherever you are!

  1. If I know your name this early, it’s not a good thing! Lol! Go Hadley on the cooking dinner! You could get used to that once a week, no? I agree on the smaller pickups twice a week. I think it keeps the food waste down. 3 is about all I can wrap my head around at a time and sometimes you can do breakfast for dinner, sandwiches, leftovers, one night of Chick Fil A, etc.

I am a big believer in naps so I say take a nap everyday if you need to/want to. The AC feels so good when you get home and take off the school ‘fits, no?

  2. I do not envy you trying to learn everyone’s names! But I suppose that is just another skill teachers have.

I don’t mind making dinner but it’s the coming up with ideas day after day that get me, so I would gladly take any and all ideas, like you!

  4. It sounds like cooking a few nights each week is a great solution. I think the block schedule would make learning the names extra challenging!
