Thursday Thoughts

Hello and happy Thursday!

I hope you are having a great week. Today, I’m sharing a Thursday Thoughts post.

On the WordPress app, they usually post a daily prompt and this one struck a chord with me the second I saw it:

Describe a phase in life that was difficult to say goodbye to.

I immediately thought of the kids’ elementary years. Starting in kindergarten, I knew from the start to treasure that phase of life for them. While I know I’m blessed with two kids, having two at once just makes it feel like time moves that much quicker. And…I feel like I don’t get to experience certain phases of life and milestones again since we don’t have a third. There was one first day of kindergarten. There was one 3rd grade zoo field trip. There was one Dr. Seuss “Cat in the Hat” performance. So, I always made it a priority to help with the class parties, take a personal day to go on the field trip, buy them too many books at the book fair and more.

After elementary school, the “magic” of school and learning seems to slip away a little bit more every year. Also, there just aren’t field trips, field day, chorus concerts, class parties and all the other special events that elementary school provides.

The kids made so many memories during those years, formed friendships, learned so much and had so much fun. So many of their core values and experiences that shaped them as learners and little humans happened in the classrooms in that building.

Covid put an end to that. They went home on Friday, March 13, 2020, finished their 4th grade year on Zoom/Google Classroom, spent most of 5th grade doing work at home or at the neighborhood “pod” of classmates. They went back to school wearing masks on March 3, 2021 but with plexi-glass around their desks as an attempt to minimize germs. Their 5th grade graduation was held in the gym, but no family could attend. Instead, we watched at home via the live stream.

I’m so thankful the kids were celebrated and were together with their classes, but it would have been nice to have the option of an outdoor ceremony or even a limit of two family members per student.

I know the administrators were making the best decision at the time, and I’m grateful for technology to still “be there” for the special milestone.

Registering for Kindergarten:

First day of K:

Last day of 5th grade:

{I must admit that I did love being at home with them during the online school days. I’m blessed that I could be home with them thanks to my job as a teacher too. I was never a stay at home mom (besides in the summer), and (mostly) loved helping them with their school work and having some extra free time with them…but I do think we were out of school for entirely too long! We all should have headed back to the classroom sooner.}

I will always look back fondly on their elementary school years.

We owe a lot to those teachers and that school. It’s bittersweet that we didn’t have the proper goodbye.

Excuse me while I go grab a tissue! haha

Wednesday Hodgepodge

Hello and happy Wednesday!

We’re chugging right along this week, and so far so good.

It’s been a bit since I’ve joined Joyce for her weekly Hodgepodge post, and that’s what I’m doing today.

This week’s questions are mostly St. Patrick’s Day themed which is very festive!

1. St. Patrick’s Day was on Monday. Did you mark the day in some way? Wear green? Make a special meal? Watch or participate in a parade?

St. Patrick’s Day has always been a holiday we’ve celebrated. Of course, Monday was a school day, so it just kind of felt like a Monday. That being said, our principal encouraged all to wear green with a department challenge of which department had the most participants wearing green. The English department won the challenge!

I’d say for at least the past ten years, I’ve made the corned beef and cabbage recipe that I got from my dad and the Irish Soda Bread recipe that I got from my mom. My brother’s family comes over and I double the recipe…two slow cookers with corned beef and veggies and two loaves of Irish Soda Bread. It’s a fun tradition that I hope my kids look back on and love. Since I made everything for Sunday dinner, Hadley kept smelling the deliciousness all day and couldn’t wait for dinner.

I don’t think I’ve been to a St. Patrick’s Day parade since college! I also feel like the Lexington parade gets rained out most years. I know it did this past Saturday.

2. Do you think luck plays a part in your life? Explain.

Here are some “notable”” luck quotes:

  • “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” – Thomas Jefferson
  • “Luck is preparation meeting opportunity.” -Oprah Winfrey
  • “Shallow men believe in luck. Strong men believe in cause and effect.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • “Good luck has its storms.” – George Lucas
  • “Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck.” -Dalai Lama

I love a good quote, and these definitely ring true. I especially think that the harder you work, the luckier you get! Hard work pays off and helps accomplish your dreams.

That being said, I don’t like to get ahead of myself for fear of “jinxing” something. It’s nice to feel like all is going well and that luck is on your side.

3. Of the 15 green foods listed, which one is your favorite and how do you like it prepared? Any on the list that are a hard no for you? In general, do you like fruits and veggies? As a kid did you eat them willingly or did you hide peas in your napkin hoping your mom wouldn’t see?

{list: asparagus, avocado, broccoli, celery, cucumber, grapes, green beans, kale, kiwi, lettuce, lime, pear, peas, pistachios, spinach}

I’d say from this list my favorite would be avocado —but for guacamole!

Hard no’s would be peas! Absolutely not. My kids like peas (or at least won’t pick them out if they are part of a meal), so I always think that it’s funny that they like them and I can’t stand peas.

I also remember my high school Spanish teacher talking about “guisantes” (peas in Spanish), and just how she would say the word as she knew I didn’t like peas!

A funny story about kiwi…When I was in probably 3rd or 4th grade…my dad said I couldn’t leave the dinner table until I tried the kiwi that was our fruit for dinner. I sat there for a long time and refused to try it. My dad wasn’t giving in and then told me if I tried it, I’d get a surprise. Finally, I tried it, gagging and then finally spitting it out. I asked my dad what my surprise was since I’d tried it…and he said the surprise was that I would like it! haha!

If “side eye” was a thing back then, I’m sure I gave him major side eye. A little bit later, he took me to Dairy Queen, and I got an Blizzard! He’s soft-hearted for sure.

Although I haven’t had kiwi since, I think it was the texture of kiwi more than anything.

I do like fruits and veggies…right now, it’s nice that at the store, there’s starting to be more of a variety of fresh fruit now that it’s spring. Of course, summer is the best time when it’s watermelon season, and I will also get pineapple a lot in the summer. It’s just nice being able to buy the Cuties now…those are easy to pack in lunches. I buy apples year round.

Green beans are the #1 veggie for dinner in our house. I buy the fresh cut ones, blanch them in water, and then drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. My kids actually like asparagus too, but usually just when I make this “asparagus fries” recipe. It’s a hit in the summer.

As a kid, I think it did okay eating veggies, but like I said, there were definitely veggies I said “no” to like peas. I also didn’t eat or like eating? asparagus until I was an adult.

4. What’s something that makes you ‘turn green’? (with envy or with illness)…

I’m not a fan of heights, big roller coasters or blood. Those things can definitely make me “turn green.”

5. Did you spend a lot of time outdoors as a child? Doing what? Do you spend a lot of time outdoors now? Doing what?

As a child, I do feel like I was outside a lot. I had a couple of friends in the neighborhood, and I remember running around with them…back and forth from house to house. We had a swing/play set in our back yard and would spend a lot of time on that in the summer. We’d go to my grandparents’ pool in the summer too!

In the spring, I love going for walks. Truly, the past couple of weeks have been so nice getting exercise in while listening to a book. I love to sit on my front porch in the summer. It’s covered, so even in the hot weather, there’s shade, and I’ll read. Of course, I love going to the pool in the summer if I can find a spot under an umbrella.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I sometimes miss the phase of the kids dressing up for holidays like Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and the 4th of July.

Cuties…too cute to pinch 🙂

Thanks for reading!

Weekend Top 5

Hello and happy Monday!…and…

I’m linking up with Sarah and Holly for…

….to share my….

Well, I wasn’t really thinking about blogging until yesterday, so I don’t have any pics from Friday or Saturday. That being said, we didn’t do much besides watch basketball, run errands, do things around the house, and I did make it to the gym!

Here were my highlights from Sunday:

The Rookie! I love this show, and I didn’t realize it had returned until a couple of weeks ago. Now, I’m getting caught up on episodes. Hayden watched one with me on Friday night, and I watched another one yesterday morning. It’s just a fun…and sometimes thrilling, show to watch.

Church! It seems like between crazy winter weather the first six weeks of 2025 and then volleyball tournaments a couple of weekends a month, we haven’t been to church as much as we like to go. We went last week and were able to go again yesterday, and it feels like we’re back in that routine which I love.

The weather was crazy yesterday…we went from torrential rains to the sun to very chilly winds to more rain and then overcast skies. The sun was shining when we left church which was such a nice way to end the service.

Leftovers! I took Hadley to a friend’s house Saturday night, and then picked up Chinese take out on the way home. We had enough for leftovers on Sunday after church which was an easy and delicious way for us to grab lunch before…

…running some errands. Not that errands and chores are fun, but I appreciated feeling productive on Saturday and Sunday. Everybody has clean sheets on their beds, I purged the last closet that I needed to, and I was able to make a few returns. Then, Hadley convinced me to pop into Bath and Body Works. I resisted the urge as I don’t need any new candles, but how cute is this bunny one?! I will say that another highlight was using a couple of coupons, including 25% off my total order to make it feel like we didn’t do too much damage!

One of my returns was to Old Navy to return two pairs of pants I’d ordered. Well, I wasn’t sure of the sizing, so I ordered four pairs of these pants (in two different sizes) because they were on sale for $14. I ordered the navy and the black of this “kick flare” style, and I love them. They are leggings material, but I will most certainly be dressing them up and down. I did end up with my true size, and I don’t regret this purchase one bit!

…And, I might be pushing it, but it will be sandals weather as much as possible because I was able to go get a pedicure after school on Friday! That was a great way to kick off the weekend.

I was up early on Sunday morning to get my corned beef in the slow cooker. I borrow my sister-in-law’s as well, so we can make two!

We had a delicious St. Patrick’s Day dinner last night with my brother’s family, and it hit the spot!

I outdid myself 😉

We ended Sunday with full bellies, ready to start the week!

What was the highlight of your weekend?

Friday Favorites {#249}

Hello and happy Friday!

I hope you’ve had a great week. Ours was good with the beautiful weather, and we seemed to have some downtime in the evenings which was appreciated!

As always, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Here are some favorites from the week…

Starting with this meme that made me laugh…and it definitely relatable!

It’s very rare that I actually go into Target as I often do Target pick-up. Last Saturday, Hadley and I ran some errands, and she needed a few things. The dollar spot immediately stopped me in my tracks. I saw these neutral ric rac place mats and thought they’d be just what I needed under our jute place mats. I was a bit behind, and just put away my winter dishes, and got back out my everyday dishes. These cute floral ones are almost twenty years old! They were on our wedding registry at Pier One. Man, I miss Pier One!

I was “influenced” and ordered this All in Motion “airy” fabric zip up jacket. For all the clothes I have, I do lack in light weight jackets. When I got it, it was on sale for $25, but I also think it’s worth the $35 price tag.

The fabric is so soft, and I like that it cinches at the waist.

Well, I’ve also been “influenced” by Hadley. She occasionally drinks an Alani, and that’s had me taking a few sips. I think she’s tried most of the flavors, but now it’s my turn. I took one to school this week, and the “orange kiss” flavor is good.

The kids’ track photos came in, and they are so good! I really appreciate the smiles!

I’d joked with the track coach that if they got a decent pic together, they’d be off the hook for Mother’s Day! They did get a couple of pics together, and this one is my fave.

My girl…right before her summer job interview on Wednesday. Not sure that I’ll look back and remember that this photo was right before that moment, but I’m sharing it anyway.

I’ve been loving my new candles from Antique Candle Co. My order arrived a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve been burning Almond Vanilla, and it’s so good.

I ordered two candles and got one free. These will last me the next couple of months. I’ve burned a bit of the lavender vanilla, and it’s so great for spring. Sweet lemon will be great for spring and summer.

I saw this pic on Instagram and X….twin fillies! Rare and precious! (FYI -these aren’t at Trav’s farm.)

Favorite Mom Meme:

Both my kids have had two rounds of braces, and let’s just say if there’s ever a third round, that’s on them!

Bonus Fave: Flashback Friday:

2015 was such a cute year!

Onion ring entertainment at dinner…

…and sweet little drawings…and booster seats!

St. Patrick’s Day:

Well, this weekend, I’ll make my traditional corned beef, cabbage, and Irish soda bread! We can’t wait.

Here are the recipes if you need an easy and delicious meal to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

Have a great weekend, and thanks for reading.

Three Things

Hello and happy Thursday!

It’s been quite a while since I’ve shared a “Three Things” post on all of us. While some things stay the same…like the kids staying busy with activities, other things change depending on the season!

Here’s a little bit of what’s been going on with us lately.

  1. At the kids’ last dentist appointment, we found out that Hayden’s wisdom teeth are in…and his top ones are poking out. I’d forgotten that last spring, the dentist said he could see them in the x-ray, but now they are in and I guess should be taken out. Typing this reminds me to call and schedule that evaluation. I’m hoping/assuming we can wait until summer to have them extracted. Of course, I had a “mom joke” of saying that if his wisdom teeth are in, shouldn’t he be more wise? Only the dentist and I laughed.
  2. Hayden’s made a great transition to track this spring. It helped tremendously that he ran cross country in the fall. Being a freshman and running against older runners will certainly be an adjustment, but he’s been getting his workouts in and is focused on the upcoming outdoor season. Hayden’s been loving the warm, spring weather we’ve been having recently. He’s already played a few rounds of golf. The other day, he played TWO rounds with friends in one day. I’m so glad he has a hobby that’s so fun for him…and keeps him outside enjoying the weather.
  3. Hayden loves this time of the year. March Madness, baby! He’s been watching other conference tournaments and of course he’s excited to watch the SEC tournament. Kentucky plays tonight, and I know he’ll watch every second of the game. The March madness is only just beginning.
  1. Hadley is loving high school life. She really enjoys her classes, her teachers and athletics. Volleyball was a great way to start the year, and she’s been enjoying the track season so far. I’ve always said that one thing I really appreciate about track is the diversity of kids on a track team. It’s been good for Hadley to get to know other athletes and get out of her comfort zone a bit being a freshman with the mix of all grade levels. She’s also been loving club volleyball. Juggling two sports and keeping up with her schoolwork has been something she’s really been handling better than expected. I’m proud of her for doing what she loves and finding time to fit everything in the best she can.
  2. In middle school, she found a great Young Life leader and group, and that’s continued in high school. She attends a Bible study every Tuesday before school, and it’s been really rewarding for her. At this age, I think it’s wonderful to see her faith journey unfold in a way that’s meaningful to her. She’s looking forward to camp this summer. She always has a wonderful time.
  3. My girl had her first job interview yesterday at our pool. At 15, she can work the pool deck and front desk, and she’s hopeful and excited for the opportunity. Assuming it works out, I think it will be good for her to have some responsibility and earn a bit of money this summer. I worked out at the club gym while she had her interview, and I loved seeing the smile on her face when she came to find me after the interview. Of course, she told me every detail. haha
  1. Me: I’ve had a really great school year. It’s been challenging in some ways and really rewarding as well. It’s been so great having my kids at school with me, and I’ve really enjoyed my classes/students this year. On another note, I’ve been trying to get back in the swing of things with working out and going for walks. The wonderful weather has been perfect for walks and listening to audio books. I was in a great workout routine in January, but not so much in February. I’m hopeful that March will be a good and active month.
  2. Trav: Travis is excited for the kids’ outdoor track season. And…he’s excited for grilling season. He grilled steaks last night and even microwaved the baked potatoes for a side. We all had a nice family dinner. He’s having surgery in a few weeks, so please send good vibes and prayers his way.
  3. Homer: Homer has been spoiled lately as Hadley has taken him on walks after dinner the past few weeks. Last night, he even got a couple of bites of steak! We adopted Homer, and he was born in the spring…so he must be six years old now. We’ll celebrate his “gotcha” day in June!

So, that’s a little bit of what’s going on with us lately. Apparently, I need to take another pic of Homer and get a pic with Trav because I had to use pics from the fall for this post! The kids track pics came in this week, so those are recent!

Have a great day,

Let’s Look

Hello and happy Wednesday!

Well, March just seems to be flying by. It’s already the second Wednesday of the month, so I’m linking up with Shay and Erika for this month’s Let’s Look.

So far this year, we’ve looked at…

This month’s topic is…let’s look on how you reset for the week on Sunday.

I truly do use Sunday as a reset, whereas, Saturday is usually more for running errands.

Here’s a few things I make sure to do on Sunday to ensure we have a successful week.

Laundry:

The weekend is when we do laundry. So, for sure, by Sunday, I try to get all the laundry washed, dried, and laid out in the kids’ rooms for them to put it up. Sometimes, I start this task on Saturday, but by Sunday, the kids have their clothes put away.

Meal Plan and Grocery Store:

I typically meal plan on Saturday, and so my grocery pick up on Sunday. If I’m running behind, I meal plan on Sunday and then do my pick up on Monday. If that’s what I need to do, I typically have a few groceries delivered on Sunday, including whatever I need for Sunday dinner. I’ve been using grocery delivery as an option since July, and it sure has come in handy.

As far as meal planning, I look at the week ahead to which days it might be best for me to use the slow cooker, or which nights I should plan on having leftovers. I try to make something on Sunday to have leftovers on Monday. I really don’t enjoy cooking on Mondays.

Plan for the Week:

I guess I actually write out what we have going on for the week before I meal plan. I still use this magnetic notepad for the fridge to write down evening activities, appointments, and what we’re having for dinner. I’ve re-ordered this meal and shopping list many times the past few years.

Another crucial step is making sure the kids know what they have going on for the upcoming week. Thankfully, we always have dinner together as a family on Sunday, so this is a good time to chat.

Notes:

I have a “this week” note on my phone, and I make sure it’s up to date with appointments, errands, activities and things I need to do each day.

Kids reset their rooms:

Sunday is for picking up all the things. The kids are busy, and they love their rooms, so they spend quite a bit of time in them. That being said, I can only walk past their rooms and see the clothes on the floor or the Chick-fil-A cup so many times before I have to say something. haha

Anyway, they know that Sundays are for tidying up and prepping for the week ahead.

Plan my outfits:

While I don’t lay my clothes out, I do try to think about my outfits…even like this week, yesterday, I had to proctor the ACT at school, so I knew I wanted to wear comfy clothes. Often times, I wear whatever I wore to church on Sunday to school on Monday.

It’s nice to at least have an idea of what I want to wear and not be scrambling at 7:15 in the morning.

Relax:

I try to relax and take some time for myself on Sundays. Whether that’s read a book, go for a walk, or binge a few episodes of a show, I try to relax and recharge for the upcoming busy week.

What about you? What do you do on Sundays to prep for the week ahead?

Share Our Lives – March 2025

Hello and happy Monday!

How was your weekend? Ours was just what we needed. We didn’t really have anything scheduled; the kids had some time with friends, I did some chores around the house, ran some errands, and we just had time to get some things done.

A walk in the sunshine last night to cap off the weekend was just what I needed.

Today, I’m co-hosting with some of my favorite bloggers for our monthly Share Our Lives link up.

So far this year we’ve discussed:

This month’s topic is…day in the life, an average day.

So truth be told, I hadn’t looked at what this month’s topic was until Thursday when I was writing my Friday Favorites post….so I was running out of days to document, and went ahead and documented last Friday.

Friday morning, I was up and at ’em at 5:50.

I had about 45 minutes of quiet in the morning…I lit a candle! I just got an Antique Candle Co. order recently, and “almond vanilla” was one of the ones that I ordered. It smells so good.

I had some coffee and watched the news. I don’t usually eat breakfast, but the week before when we had so many bananas on hand, I started most mornings with a banana and a bit of Nutella. I was hungry Friday morning, so I went ahead and had a light breakfast.

I took some time to read some of my favorite blogs…I finished reading some other faves after school.

Of course, I played Bejeweled Blitz. It’s how I always start my day.

Around 6:45, it was time to get moving…including waking the kids up. Hadley wasn’t having it! haha

I packed my lunch and filled up my tumbler. I’m still loving my new lunch tote, and I’ve had this tumbler for over a year and a half. I’m thinking about ordering another one just to throw in the rotation.

Then it was time for my morning skincare routine.

After that, I made the bed.

…and did my make-up.

I still use Seint make-up. Sometimes, before I blend it in, I’m walking around the house…and my family looks at me like I’m crazy.

…that’s better!

After that, I did my hair and then it was perfume time. Recently, I’ve been wearing this one…

I got dressed and headed to gather all my stuff to go to school.

I was running a bit behind but left around 7:40.

Once I got to school, I got organized because I’d been out the day before for Hadley’s race at the indoor state track meet.

I was so lucky to have a veteran teacher as my sub. He just retired last year, and he’s so great! I appreciated everything being organized for my return…with very few notes! haha

Then, I prepped for the day. I put my agenda on the smart board…

…and on the white board.

I forgot to take a picture, but I headed to another teacher’s room for Advisory. We split a sophomore Advisory, and it’s nice to have a co-teacher for that.

1st hour is my co-teach English 1 class. We are almost finished with Romeo and Juliet. On Friday, we read the “bridge text” of Act 4. It’s the shorter text the online textbook provides. I print the text, so we can read it, and they don’t need their computers.

During 2nd hour, I made some copies….

…as well as an answer key…

…before helping a few students from another class who were reading Act 5.

3rd hour, I covered an AP Lang class because the sub didn’t show for the English teacher. They were doing a practice ACT, and they were such a great group of kids.

I had a meeting during 4th and brought my lunch.

5th hour is my Adv. English 1, and we were also reading Act 4, but I read the No Fear text with them.

My last hour is the same as my first hour…co-teach English 1, so we did the same work. I feel like I move faster with students in my 1st than my 6th, so we actually will finish the comprehension questions today.

If you’re a middle or high school teacher, you know it’s rare when you have a good 6th hour. Even the best kids are ready to go home by 6th. This group is such a sweet class, and I’ve enjoyed ending my day with them this year. They are so great that they are the class I scheduled for my observation a few weeks ago. They did a great job, and I appreciated their effort during my observation.

After school, Hadley and her friend came into my room before track practice. They get a snack, and it’s nice to see them before they head off to practice.

I like to stay on Fridays and get caught up on grading and make sure I’m ready for the following week. I know some like to dart out the door on Fridays, but that’s always been my day to stay for 30-45 minutes to get caught up if needed.

It’s a great feeling leaving the week knowing I’m ready for the week ahead.

I had some grading to get caught up on…

Then, I had a Target pick up.

I went home for about 45 minutes before I had to go back and pick up the kids from practice. I used my time wisely and watched two episodes of Younger. haha

Then, I went to pick up the kids…and got some protein in on the drive back to school.

On Fridays after practice, I usually take the kids to a smoothie place…but right when I pulled in to park, I realized that I didn’t have a way to pay for the smoothies. I’ve done this a couple of times recently. Whoops.

We headed home, and Trav wanted something from there, so he and Hadley went back to order.

I did my daily word search…

…and they got home with smoothies, and I had requested a salad for dinner.

Dinner time!

Then, I read for a bit…

After that, I showered, and did my PM skincare routine. My PM Dime serum ran out before my new order arrived, so I subbed in this Vitamin C serum that I use sometimes.

Then, it was around 8:30, and Travis and I watched two episodes of Night Agent. We love this show…and only have two episodes left for this season.

Then, it was bedtime…I was so tired after a long week.

So, there’s a pretty average day…Friday nights usually have a little more freedom than weeknights…which is what we all need after a busy week.

Have a great Monday.

Friday Favorites {#248}

Hello and happy Friday!

How was your week? We had a good one with a couple of evenings with nothing on the agenda! What is this life?!

As always, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Here are some favorites from the week:

Hadley kicked off the weekend at a friend’s birthday party. Then, we all had an early wake-up call on Saturday morning for her volleyball tournament.

Our team mom and her daughter made these cute clothes pins that girls could use to clip on other players’ bags in the tournament. I thought this was such a cute idea and a great way to spread positivity.

The Kendrick Lamar one made me chuckle.

One of the dads brought his camera and took some awesome pics. I just love watching Hadley play, and these photos are priceless.

They are a sweet team who have fun playing together. They won their bracket on Sunday, so they ended the weekend on a high note.

On Saturday, Hayden went to the UK basketball game, and he had some time on the court before the game. So fun!

Remember my banana situation from last week?

While I was able to give a few bundles away, I did save one to make chocolate chip banana bread which was a nice mid-week treat.

Yesterday was a family affair in Louisville supporting Hadley at the indoor state meet. She qualified to run the 400m race, and we were there to cheer her on. She was one of three freshmen to qualify, and I know she was nervous. She ran a 2 second PR and had a smile on her face afterwards. We were so proud of her!

Yesterday, I shared all about what I’ve been wearing lately, and I love my new SSYS leggings.

I added a few new book trackers to my Instagram highlight. I really enjoy making those! If you use them, feel free to tag me. I’d love to see what you’re reading.

Favorite Recipe:

I tried a new dinner recipe this week: Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas…This recipe made enough for us to have them for dinner two nights! They were delish.

Favorite Mom Meme:

OMG! This is Hadley! After I shower, I can’t wait to put on my PJs…and she just sits around in her robe with her hair in a towel while scrolling her phone. It drives me crazy. haha

Weekly Recap:

Here are my posts from the week in case you missed one:

Share Our Lives:

We have our monthly Share Our Lives link up on Monday. This month’s topic is…day in the life…an average day. We’d love to have you join us.

Y’all…do you know what I have going on this weekend? Absolutely nothing! There are no kids’ activities and nothing else really on our schedule either. I’d love sleep in, binge watch a favorite show and get caught up with my life…haha! I might just have the time to do that this weekend.

Fashion Files

Hello and happy Thursday!

I hope you’ve been having a great week.

It’s been a minute since I’ve shared what I’ve been wearing. I’m linking up with Kellyann and Jill for Fashion Files.

Since I’ve shared some clothes that I love from Shop Style Your Senses (SSYS) in the past, I’m sharing how much I really do love the clothes I buy from there, and that a lot what I wear is from SSYS, supplemented mostly with Amazon.

I’ve been following and buying from SSYS from the start…six years! That being said, once they started producing their own label items a few years ago, that’s when I really found pieces that I loved.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve snapped pics in a few outifts…mostly what I wore to school vs. more casual outfits for the weekend.

Excuse the poor lighting in some of the photos… if I snap in pic in the morning, it’s not very bright outside!

School:

The Greta top with the cutest collar is a new purchase, and I couldn’t love it more!

I purchased this Sophia set a few months ago, and it’s become an absolute fave. It’s definitely one that I can wear throughout almost any season! One day for school, I paired it with my favorite Amazon cardigan that I have in three colors.

Friday is always casual dress at school and last week, I wore last year’s Ainsley pullover with jeans. The “air” fabric is buttery soft, and I love wearing this when I can.

On Monday, I wore one of my absolute favorite SSYS items. This pullover was one of the first, if not the first, label pieces they designed. Now, they name all their items, but this OG one doesn’t have a name. It’s perfect to wear with leggings, but I’ve also worn it with jeans. I’ve worn this so many times over the past three years. They’ve made other iterations of it as well, but the thicker quilted fabric is nice to wear in the fall and winter. For example, the new fabric is lighter weight than the original.

The Ava quilted pullover is another fave. I’ve worn it quite a few times over the past year. I love the side zippers and the funnel neck collar. I wore the SSYS sleeveless poplin undershirt which is perfect because it’s fitted but then you have the cute collar. For shoes, I wore my favorite Amazon flats that I have in black and in tan.

I’ve also worn that same undershirt with the Lucy scalloped pullover. This is such a comfy but cute top that I’ve worn many times since I purchased it in the fall. (Peep my fave Amazon flats in khaki)

Casual/Weekend:

I wore the same Lucy top one weekend night with jeans and tennis shoes.

For Hadley’s volleyball games, I wore SSYS leggings, my favorite Amazon t-shirt, and the SSYS shacket (shirt/jacket combo). The shacket is an SSYS label piece that they’ve sold over the past couple of years. I finally decided to buy one at the beginning of the year, and it arrived, I put it on and wasn’t sure it was for me….but then I threw it on and decided to give it a try, and there’s no looking back. I love it. I’ve worn it mostly casually, but I’ve also worn it to school with pants and a blouse. I know I’ll wear it with dresses once the weather is warm enough. It’s truly become one of my favorite staple pieces in my wardrobe.

When we went to the pizza place with friends a couple of weekends ago, I wore this super soft Henley that I bought on a Saturday Steal deal.

Last weekend, this is what I wore to Hadley’s volleyball games on Saturday. SSYS leggings (this is their seamless butter fabric), active top in the honeycomb fabric and then the updated Ainsley with a ruffle collar in the same air fabric that came out in the fall. The black active top was probably the second label piece I bought a couple of years ago. I have the same top in a couple of colors. This is this year’s iteration.

This pair of leggings is the pair I bought from the January athleisure drop. The compression on them is next level, but they are still super comfy. Since they match Hadley’s volleyball team’s logo, I wore them to her tournament a couple of weeks ago.

And…this is the pair I bought from the February drop this month. They arrived this week, and I couldn’t wait to try them on. This is a very typical after school outfit for me…leggings and a comfy sweatshirt.

…and while it seems like I might shop a lot from SSYS, I don’t really shop anywhere else now. Again, Amazon and Target or Old Navy are good in a pinch or for basics, but most of what I reach for in my closet is SSYS. Quality over quantity.

When I pack a suitcase, I bet it’s at least 50% SSYS.

Also, now I’m very comfortable with sizing for their label pieces. Overall, I’m a size large from tops to leggings. There are some things that have some room, for example, the Lucy and Ainsley pullovers that I’m guessing a medium would work too….but just depends on how I’d want to style them. With the Ainsleys, I’d want to wear them with leggings mostly, so I’d want them to cover my rear.

Also, since I’ve been buying their label pieces for a couple of years, I know that some of the popular items will most likely come back the next year, but maybe with a few updates or other color options. For example, Ava and Ainsley have been around for a couple of years but updated. The spring version of Lucy is this cute scallop set.

Recently, I’ve been getting one pair of leggings when they do their monthly athleisure live sale. That being said, when I recently cleared out my dresser drawer that holds my leggings, 90% of the pairs that remain are SSYS.

They just dropped their spring collection, and I showed restraint only ordering one dress. haha

A couple of other things about SSYS —

On Facebook, there is a BST (buy/sell/trade) group, and I’ve sold quite a few pieces in that group. Just this week, I sold a top that I didn’t wear as much as I thought I would.

Some people sell their purchases if they’ve missed the return window or if they are just doing a closet purge.

SSYS also posts on Facebook on Sunday, and if you post a pic wearing an SSYS item, you get an email with a code for 10% off. I have so many codes from sharing photos that I never pay full price for anything I purchase.

Of course, they sell things besides clothes. The online shop has shoes and accessories too. I’ve purchased a few necklaces and earrings from them as well.

You can purchase on the app or online.

One thing about returns…If you do return something to SSYS, they only do store credit.

Anyway, that’s a bit of what I’ve been wearing, and just showcasing the online shop that I love.

Let me know if you have any questions. Soon…it will be time for tanks and dresses!

What I’ve Been Reading: February 2025

Hello!

Well, I’m a bit late sharing the books I read in February, but it was another great month of reading (or listening…as you’ll see in a minute!)

…and hi, my name is Jen…and I apparently love a memoir!

{As always, book summaries are from Goodreads…}

Sutton Foster’s Hooked:

Summary:

From the 2-time Tony Award-winner and the star of TV’s Younger , funny and intimate stories and reflections about how crafting has kept her sane while navigating the highs and lows of family, love, and show business (and how it can help you, too).

Whether she’s playing an “age-defying” book editor on television or dazzling audiences on the Broadway stage, Sutton Foster manages to make it all look easy. How? Crafting . From the moment she picked up a cross stitch needle to escape the bullying chorus girls in her early performing days, she was hooked. Cross stitching led to crocheting, crocheting led to collages, which led to drawing, and so much more. Channeling her emotions into her creations centered Sutton as she navigated the significant moments in her life and gave her tangible reminders of her experiences. Now, in this charming and poignant collection, Sutton shares those moments, including her fraught relationship with her agoraphobic mother;  a painful divorce splashed on the pages of the tabloids; her struggles with fertility; the thrills she found on the stage during hit plays like Thoroughly Modern Millie, Anything Goes , and Violet ; her breakout TV role in Younger ; and the joy of adopting her daughter, Emily. Accompanying the stories, Sutton has included crochet patterns, recipes, and so much more!

Quick Thoughts:

I actually finished this book at the end of January but not in time to include it in my book post last month.

I’d had Sutton Foster’s book saved on my Goodreads list, and after I started watching binging Younger on Netflix, I decided to listen to her memoir. I really enjoy listening to this book. Her childhood was interesting moving around, her parents’ relationship and her mom’s struggles. I felt sad for her at some points as she recounts all the times throughout the years that all of those things impacted her even as an adult. I loved hearing about her time on Broadway, winning Tony awards, and making Younger.

From Here to the Great Unknown:

Summary:

In 2022, Lisa Marie Presley asked her daughter to help finally finish her long-gestating memoir.

A month later, Lisa Marie was dead, and the world would never know her story in her own words, never know the passionate, joyful, caring, and complicated woman that Riley loved and grieved.

Riley got the tapes that her mother had recorded for the book, laid in her bed, and listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about smashing golf carts together in the yards of Graceland, about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs, just the two of them. About getting dragged screaming out of the bathroom as she ran towards his body on the floor. About living in Los Angeles with her mother, getting sent to school after school, always kicked out, always in trouble. About her singular, lifelong relationship with Danny Keough, about being married to Michael Jackson, what they shared in common. About motherhood. About deep addiction. About ever-present grief. Riley knew she had to fulfill her mother’s wish to reveal these memories, incandescent and painful, to the world.

To make her mother known.

This extraordinary book is written in both Lisa Marie’s and Riley’s voices, a mother and daughter communicating—from this world to the one beyond—as they try to heal each other. Profoundly moving and deeply revealing, From Here to the Great Unknown is a book like no other—the last words of the only child of an American icon.

Quick Thoughts:

This was such a great book to read, but even better to listen to. I believe this book was a recommendation thanks to Sarah.

Of course, it was interesting reading about Lisa Marie’s childhood, but her story is also so heart-breaking. Hearing her daughter read the parts that she included to finish the book made the memoir that much more impactful. Julia Roberts read the parts Lisa Marie had written, and hearing her voice in contrast to Riley Keough’s was perfect.

Sydney McLaughlin knows about facing down obstacles. She will inspire you Experience the story of a woman who shifted from anxiety to boldness, from limits to freedom, and from perfectionism to purpose—and now shows the world that often what we think is impossible is possible with God.

Quick Thoughts:

When searching memoirs auto/bio that my library had available on audio, Sydney McLaughlin’s book was available.

You know my kids love to follow runners, and we’ve followed Sydney’s career since the one year she was at the University of Kentucky. We’d hoped to see her run at the Olympic track trials when we were in Eugene last summer, but she changed up the races she was going to run. Anyway, her athletic career and her faith were both inspiring to read (listen) about in her book.

The House Party:

Summary:

Maja Jensen is smart, stylish, and careful, the type of woman who considers every detail when building her dream home in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The perfect house that would compensate for her failure to have a child, the house that was going to save her marriage. But when a group of reckless teenagers trash the newly built home just weeks before she moves in, her plans are shattered.

Those teenagers are the “good kids”–the ones on track to go to college and move on to the next stage of their privileged lives. They have grown up in a protected bubble and are accustomed to getting by with just a slap on the wrist. Did they think they could just destroy property without facing punishment? Or was there something deeper, darker, at play that night? As the police close in on a list of suspects, the tight-knit community begins to fray as families attempt to protect themselves.

What should have been the party of the year will have repercussions that will put Maja’s marriage to the ultimate test, jeopardize the futures of those “good kids,” and divide the town over questions of privilege and responsibility.

Quick Thoughts:

This book was just ok. I kept waiting for more of the story line to develop but…There was a party at a house. The kids caused damage. The end.

I’m off to a good start reading in 2025!

Happy reading,
