Target Tuesday

Hello and happy Tuesday!

Target is the real MVP of all the things, and lately, with some purchases, I’ve thought to myself “oh, I should share this!”…so I’m doing that today with a Target Tuesday round up.

Hadley has actually driven me to Target twice since getting her permit…I guess I’m already teaching her my ways! haha

Here are some recent finds that I’m loving:

So, I shared the bathroom update with these pretty white towels that I picked up at TJ Maxx…

…but I knew when I bought them that white probably wouldn’t be practical for everyday towels because, well, my kids still don’t seem to understand not to wipe their toothpaste mouths off with the HAND towel?!

Anyway, Memorial Day weekend, I was absolutely influenced by Landyn when she shared her cheetah pattern bath towels, and I saw that the Threshold brand also had the cheetah hand towel, and I purchased two.

I’m still keeping the white hand towels in the rotation, but I’m loving this neutral with the wallpaper.

…and I did what any rational person would do and I purchased two bath towels as well. We’ve had the same bath towels for quite some time, so I got rid of two and replaced them with these. They are just perfect.

When I purchased the towels, they were on sale, but they are absolutely reasonably priced and great quality.

I’ve already shared this tray, but it’s still one of my favorite parts of our updated bathroom. Online, it comes in three colors, and my receipt says I purchased the white one.

…but it most certainly looks cream to me. I love it…but I don’t think I would call it white.

On the same Target trip, I also picked up this little tray not knowing which tray would work best. I had every intention of returning it, but then I thought it looked so cute on the night stand next to our guest bed. Our guest bed situation is one that “bothers” me in that we don’t have a guest bedroom…just a bed in the basement.

So, I took this opportunity to keep it and put it on the bedside table.

On a second Target trip, I added this room spray and…

….this sweet little scallop trinket dish to the tray. I figured it would be good for jewelry or keys.

Y’all, I have this cute little corner in the kitchen where I usually keep a plant. The problem is that we don’t get a lot of sunlight in that spot, so time and time again, a plant doesn’t survive.

So, I decided to add that to my Target list, and of course Target has everything so, look what I found…this cute little fiddle leaf plant. I think this is just what we need in this spot. But, y’all, twice I’ve almost gone over to water it! I’m used to trying to keep a plant alive over in that little corner! haha

A few months ago, Travis got rid of my plastic cutting boards…he has his reasons, but I was so annoyed. I asked him if he was trying to cut our marriage short! I was truly so mad. Anyway, I saw this cutting board and bought it to replace one of the two that he got rid of on his purging spree.

This doormat continues to be a favorite…

…and was just what we needed to spruce up our front porch.

These wide leg sailor jeans come in so many cute colors. I have them in beige and blue. They are high rise, so I sized up one. When I bought them, they were on sale, but full price for $28 is worth every penny.

I’ve already worn both pairs a few times, and love them.

I wore the blue pair to a graduation party (with this sweater) on Sunday and the senior graduate complimented me on my outfit…enough said!

Ok, I’m not a fan of wearing shorts…I’m a leggings girl all the way. That being said, `Regan (@thebloomingnest) shared these flutter athletic shorts, and I decided to give them a try. I always size up in athletic shorts (just my preference!), and that’s what I did with these. I now have them in navy and black, and I really like them. Again, I got them on sale, but they come in quite a few colors with a $20 price tag. The “All in Motion” brand has been a good one for me.

I was in need of a couple new sports bras and have similar ones from All in Motion in the past. These are comfy and supportive!

Like I mentioned before, Hadley was with me on a couple of these Target trips. She usually has a list, but really all she needed was some more dry shampoo. We always get the Batiste brand, but I hadn’t seen the “brunette” dry shampoo. I guess it doesn’t spray white when you apply it to your hair. What will they think of next?

Have you done Target returns from your car?! This new feature is life changing as well!

So, those are some of my Target finds and faves! What would we do without Target?…especially Target pickup and exchanges! What a time to be alive!

Summer Reading 2025

Hello and happy Monday! Mondays just hit different in the summer!

How was your weekend? Ours was great…Friday night, we celebrated my niece’s birthday; Saturday was mostly spent at the state track meet, and yesterday, I was a lazy bum until the afternoon! Then, we attended a grad party and went to my brother’s house for dinner. It was a really great weekend, but I truly feel like I’m hanging on by a thread. The end of the school year was no joke and that coupled with the busyness of Friday and Saturday have me needing a moment to do nothing.

Did you catch my post yesterday? I recapped May in a “Monthly Moments” post. It was such a great month!

Now, it’s time to turn the page to June which means it’s time for summer reading!

Love this thought:

This is one of my favorite posts to put together every year.

Here’s a look back on my lists the past few years:

This was my summer reading list in 2021:

2022:

2023:

2024:

When I make these lists, I try to be reasonable with what I actually think I can read. It seems like eight to nine summer books is attainable. I choose books that are available at the library, but then there are typically books that I know I’ll be on the wait-list for a bit. And, usually, I will purchase one book that’s new and on my list. Anyway, here’s my summer reading list for…

2025:

Is it even summer reading without a book written by Carley Fortune, Nancy Thayer or Kristy Woodson Harvey? I added The Comeback Summer to my list again this summer since I didn’t get to it last summer.

The good news is that I’ve already started listening to All the Summers in Between, and I have One Golden Summer added to my Kindle. I’ve started reading/listening to both, and I have zero regrets putting them on my summer TBR list!

What’s one of the books on your summer reading list?

Monthly Moments: May 2025

Hello and happy Sunday!

Also, happy June 1st! May is over, so I’m taking a look back on Maycember. May is filled with lots of fun, but like December, this month likes to try and take me out! haha

May memories:

The Major visited and was able to catch a couple of track meets and my nephew’s baseball game. We were also able to celebrate Major’s birthday a bit early.

Hadley and I traveled to Gatlinburg for her final tournament of club season. The girls had lots of fun, and it was nice having a bit of downtime when they weren’t playing.

We got home from Gatlinburg late afternoon on Mother’s Day, and my front porch looked pretty with flowers and new planters along with the traditional hanging fern baskets. The kids also got me flowers and a card which I appreciated!

Yay! We finished updating the bathroom…and I’m still so in love:

Track season continued with a couple of meets including the regional meet.

Last week, we wrapped up the school year…freshman year for the kids and year 23 for me! Since we didn’t get a Mother’s Day photo, I hopped in the last day of school photo with them.

We celebrated my niece’s birthday on Friday which was a great way to wrap up the week and kick start summer.

Yesterday, Hadley ran in the state meet…earning two medals, one in the 4 x 200 relay and one in the 400m dash. It was a beautiful day for the meet…

…and then she did a quick change and went to the Railbird music festival to catch some of her favorite country artists!

I’d say the biggest highlight of all for both of them this month is — that they both got their driver’s permit!

I’m still trying to get used to this milestone!

May was a really great and memorable month. Now, we’re ready for June and hope to find our summer groove soon!

I’ll be back tomorrow to share the books I hope to read this summer!

Friday Favorites {#260}: The Last Day of School

Hello and happy Friday!

TGIF! Today is officially my first day of summer, and I’m ready for it.

As always, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Well, I’m keeping it short and sweet this week!

We haven’t had a ton going on besides wrapping up the school year, so today I’m sharing the last day of school pics.

It was raining on Wednesday morning, so the traditional last day of school pics were taken on the front porch. Wednesday afternoon and evening turned out to be lovely, but Hadley had track practice and Hayden went and played golf with a friend. I’m glad I snagged the pics when I could that morning.

Ready to wrap up the school year:

I hopped in a pic since we never got a Mother’s Day pic a couple of weeks ago. Then, I had to rush off to school and they went in the house to have breakfast.

We all had a really good school year. The kids did a great job navigating a new school, keeping up with their classwork, earning good grades and juggling their schedules with academics and athletics. I think they learned a lot this year, both in the classroom and in regards to how high school works, in general! It’s tough being a freshman…and they made it! haha

I had a really good year overall. Of course, I had a couple of classes this year which I hadn’t had in a while, and I had to get used to having some of my kids’ friends in my classes. The class of 2028 will always hold a special place in my heart for quite a few reasons!

I’m thankful for a great freshman year for my kids and the same can be said for year 23 for me!

Besides the last day of school, I have a driving update….riding in the car with them has been a bit easier lately. Obviously, they’re still getting the hang of driving, but each drive has gotten better. Hadley drove us to Starbucks on Sunday, and that was quite the treat! Hayden drove me to get ice cream the other day, and did just fine on quite a busy road.

I’m glad we have some down time in the summer to keep working on their driving skills.

Favorite Mom Meme:

Isn’t this one so true? haha

Weekly Recap:

I had a few posts this week in case you missed one:

Tomorrow or Sunday, I’ll share my Monthly Moments post to recap May. It’s hard to believe that we’re about to turn the calendar page to June!

Have a great weekend,

Monthly Musings

Hello and happy Thursday!

Do you hear that sound? Well, it’s still my alarm clock going off…but I woke up at 6:30 instead of 5:50 today! Today is a teacher work day, so I have a little bit of extra time in the morning. Tomorrow, there will be the sound of silence with no alarm going off!

It’s finally the last Thursday of the month, so I’m linking up with Holly and Patty for this month’s Monthly Musings.

This month’s topic is…kicking off summer!

1. What are you looking forward to most this summer?

I’m really hoping we have some time to just relax. To be honest, most summers don’t provide as much rest as I ever need and want…but I know that even if we do still have things going on, I shouldn’t really have to set an alarm! That’s a step in the right direction.

Travis and I have our 20 year wedding anniversary in June! Time flies! I’m not sure if we have any big plans, but I’m sure we’ll do something to celebrate the milestone.

Our niece is getting married in June and our nephew is getting married in July. So, we have some weddings to go to this summer.

2. Any favorite summer traditions?

Pool time is always a fun summer tradition along with celebrating the 4th of July.

3. Any summer travel plans? Please dish!

At the moment, we really don’t have travel plans. That being said, we might get something organized at some point.

We’ll probably go to KC for a few days. This summer is different in that two weekends are scheduled with weddings and one weekend, the kids will be recovering from having their wisdom teeth removed!

Both kids have camp, but of course those weeks aren’t the same. Fall sports start in mid-July…

…and there goes summer!

4. How do you red, white and blue?

The 4th of July has always been a favorite holiday. The past couple of years, Hadley has been at camp. I’m happy for her, but I miss the holiday traditions. We typically have a low key 4th of July. Hayden has run the Lexington 10k the past two years, and I do try to make my red, white and blue waffles. Sometimes we go to the pool, and we typically grill out before watching the fireworks.

I miss the days of the kids decked out in red, white and blue.

5. Beach, lake or pool?

I like all three. Of course, we go to the pool the most. Occasionally, we’ll go to the lake with friends and often we have a beach vacation in the summer. Looks like this summer we’ll make the most of pool time!

6. Favorite summer sweet treat?

Ice cream is always a favorite summer treat. Mint chocolate chip is my favorite flavor. To me, nothing says summer like strawberry short cake!

7. Favorite sunscreens and self tanners?

For quite some time, Neutrogena has been my “go to” sunscreen. I like the stick for easy application on our faces, and the spray, always 50 SPF or higher, is what we use for our bodies.

I’ve been using the Jergens “Instant Sun” for quite a few years as well. I use a mitt to apply it, and overall, it’s very easy to use. It’s nice to add some color to my arms and legs before I get a full tan in the summer.

8. Best flip flops or sandals?

My favorite pool/beach sandals are from Nordstrom. I have had two pairs of these Havianas for many years, and just got a new pair last summer.

I’ve shared time and time again, that I love my rose gold Amazon sandals. (I size up one full size!) I had my last pair for four years, and just purchased the same pair a couple of weeks ago.

These thin strapped “Shade and Shore” sandals from Target are my favorite to wear for a little bit nicer look with dresses and shorts.

9. How are you staying fit this summer?

Fit? What’s that? haha!

I’ve been taking advantage of the cooler temps and going for walks to get some steps in before the heat of the summer arrives.

The Bodi workouts are still very convenient for me to do in my basement…especially when I’m not super motivated. If that’s the case, I usually tell myself that I can muster the motivation to put shoes on and head to the basement for 20-30 minutes.

I also enjoy going to the gym to use the elliptical when I have the chance. I went on Monday, and that’s a nice part of my fitness routine that I’ve missed.

I also plan on taking a Reformed Pilates class one to two days a week which will be a nice change of pace.

I’m excited to have the time to choose what I want to do depending on the day over the summer months.

10. Favorite summer themed movies?

I’m not sure why, but I immediately thought of Grease. My favorite movie is the Hayley Mills version of Parent Trap. I love movies like The Sandlot and The Goonies in the summer as well.

This post has me excited for summer! Thanks for hosting, ladies!

What I’ve Been Reading: May 2025

Hello and happy Wednesday…It’s our last day of school, so that makes this Wednesday even sweeter!

Well, I was afraid this might happen. The month has come where “my reading roll” slowed down. I did read one book and listened to one other, so I’m sharing those two with you today!

{As always, book summaries are from Goodreads…}

I’ll Have What She’s Having:

Summary:

There’s a woman I want to become, Chelsea Handler thought as a child. She’ll be strong and confident. She’ll light up a room and spread that light to make others feel better. She’ll make a living being herself. She’ll be a survivor.

At ten years old, Chelsea opened a lemonade stand and realized she’d make more money if the drinks were spiked. So she added vodka to her recipe and used her earnings to upgrade herself to first-class on a family vacation—leaving her parents and siblings in coach. She moved to Los Angeles and got fired from her temp job when she admitted she didn’t know how to transfer calls. She’s played pickleball with the scions of an American dynasty. She’s sexted a governor. She shared psychedelics with strangers in Spain. When she accidentally ended up at dinner with Woody Allen, she was not going to leave the table without asking him a very personal pointed question. She went on national television and talked about having threesomes. She’s never been one to hold back.

But this life of adventure and absurdity is only part of her story. Chelsea knows what it is to truly show up for her family—canine and human, biological and chosen. She’s discovered how to spend time with herself, how to meditate, how to be open to love, and how to end a relationship with dignity. She is a sister to the many women who rely on her.

Quick Thoughts:

Chelsea Handler was one of the first comedians I remember seeing on TV. I’d sometimes watch her Chelsea Lately show on E! and I read her 2008 book Are You There Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea.

Overall, I think she’s funny. She has a self-deprecating humor about herself, and listening to her read this book made it more enjoyable. Also, I think if you are interested in reading her book, listening to it is the way to go. If you know her humor, then of course, it was crass and inappropriate at times, but it was also funny and inspirational too. I didn’t realize she’d dated a man with three daughters and hearing about their relationship and how she’s continued to be there for the girls into their adult lives was a sweet spot in this memoir. She reads journal entries and reflects on her journey with therapy which also shows a softer side to her. She’s short and to the point and times and one of the best parts is when she shares the email she sent her family, her nieces and nephews, after one of the epic vacations she took the family on at some point. She’s very matter of fact with them about all they take for granted, how they should treat their mother (her sister), how they should treat others, and more. Again, Chelsea probably has a polarizing personality, but I thought this was a humorous read.

Greenwich Park:

Summary:

Helen’s idyllic life—handsome architect husband, gorgeous Victorian house, and cherished baby on the way (after years of trying)—begins to change the day she attends her first prenatal class and meets Rachel, an unpredictable single mother-to-be. Rachel doesn’t seem very maternal: she smokes, drinks, and professes little interest in parenthood. Still, Helen is drawn to her. Maybe Rachel just needs a friend. And to be honest, Helen’s a bit lonely herself. At least Rachel is fun to be with. She makes Helen laugh, invites her confidences, and distracts her from her fears.

But her increasingly erratic behavior is unsettling. And Helen’s not the only one who’s noticed. Her friends and family begin to suspect that her strange new friend may be linked to their shared history in unexpected ways. When Rachel threatens to expose a past crime that could destroy all of their lives, it becomes clear that there are more than a few secrets laying beneath the broad-leaved trees and warm lamplight of Greenwich Park.

Quick Thoughts:

It’s been a bit since I’d read a mystery/thriller, and this one hit the spot! I always love a London setting and a creepy main character. From the start, you know something is “off” with Rachel but you’re just not sure what. There are twists and turns and pieces that I started to put together….but then of course, there’s always another final twist to round out the story. Some of the chapters are written in the point of view of the park which added an extra layer to the story. This was a good, quick read!

Rating:

Soon, I’ll share my summer reading list! I definitely hope to have more time to read in the next couple of months!

Monthly Memes

Hello and happy Tuesday!

How was your three day weekend? Ours was good and just what we needed in regards to not having a lot going on. The weather was overcast and cool on Saturday and Sunday, but yesterday ended up being a really nice day. I’m ready for the week days to start feeling like the weekends! Two more days to go!

Well, I didn’t have a post for yesterday, but I can’t let a month go by without sharing some memes that made me laugh. This time next week will be June! How is that possible?!

Here are a few favorite memes from the month:

Just in time for the school year to wrap up…

(Really, it’s been a good year! I just think we’re all ready for summer…both teachers and students!)

Definitely me more often than not:

‘Tis the season!

Like why am I so bad at technology?! Haha

Oh my gosh, I was just thinking this the other day when I was trying to register for something…

This one is so random that I really did chuckle when I saw it:

Trav took Homer to the vet recently, and I’d never thought about the vet knocking until seeing this meme. haha

I was just telling another mom friend that at this point I should know what some of my friends do for a living. Obviously, for most, I have a general idea, but some are more specialized in their professions that I should probably have a better understanding by now.

I keep it easy on everyone by being a teacher…no big explanations there!

Never forget 🤣

I hope your week starts off right with a laugh or two!

Friday Favorites {#259}

Hello and happy Friday!

This my last official Friday of school, and it’s the first day of final exams. Nothing like a wonky schedule to make everyone feel even more off kilter as we wrap up the year. We still have two more days after Memorial Day. I feel like we should always be finished before Memorial Day weekend.

Also, there’s still a whole week of May left, and I feel like “Maycember” has already done me in.

As always, I’m linking up with Andrea and Erika for this week’s Friday Favorites.

Here are some favorites from the week:

Another week of track being a favorite. Last Saturday was the regional race, and both kids ran. Hayden had the 1600m, and Hadley ran the 4×200 and the 400m race. I hate for Hayden that his season ended without a PR. While his time is great by most everyone’s standards, he was aiming for under 4:40 and didn’t get close to that time.

Hadley’s relay team ran well, and Hadley had almost a two second PR in the 400m. We’ll find out for sure soon, but she’s mostly headed to the state meet in both events.

I know I share a lot about their athletic accolades, but they know that what’s important is getting good grades, being polite, helping others, being a good teammate, being a gracious winner and loser, and always trying their best. I promise, it’s not all about the athletics in our house.

One thing they don’t tell you about having twins is how hard it is when one struggles and the other succeeds. I’ve always said that I’m thankful that my twins are boy/girl because if they were boy/boy or girl/girl, I’d probably compare them more. Even now, for example with track, one runs longer distance and one runs shorter distance. That being said, as you know, Hayden runs year round and Hadley runs just during the spring. So, I know he was bummed about how his season ended, but I know he’ll rally to support his sister in a couple of weeks at state. It’s just hard seeing your kids feeling defeated when they’ve worked really hard, but they have great perspective on it all. Some athletes run to be a part of team, others run for health reasons, some run for fun and others are a little more competitive and all of those athletes have a spot on the track team…which is one of the reasons I love track season. That being said, track season is long, y’all!

Another favorite this week was seeing so many peonies at Trader Joe’s.

Of course, I picked up a bouquet as well as this candle. I hadn’t seen the garden party scent before, but it’s lovely!

Homer is always a favorite. The other night I was home alone and couldn’t find Homer. I called for him with no luck. I checked outside one more time and then I spotted him in Hayden’s room! I think I interrupted his nap.

Fave Outfit:

I know last week that I shared about my new Target “wide leg sailor” jeans/pants that I got in blue and beige.

Well, on Monday I wore the beige ones with this new button down Amazon sweater, and I got so many compliments on my outfit!

This is one of those light weight sweaters that is perfect for spring and summer, and now I want it in another color.

Screenshot

(Sizing note – I’d say the sweater is true to size. I did size up one because if I think something is going to be fitted/tighter on my chest, that’s what I do. I’m assuming I could have ordered my regular size based on how this one fits, but this one fits just fine…it fits, but it’s not too loose if that makes sense) (Also, the pants come in so many colors if you are interested, just an FYI)

Also, a skinnier sandal (like the ones in the pic with the blue pants) would have been better suited for these pants, but my feet needed more support that day, and these sandals continue to be a fave.

Favorite Milestone…

At least I think it’s a favorite…is we have two new drivers in the house. This past week, both kids passed their permit test.

The state of Kentucky recently passed the age for permit test from 16 to 15. I was 15 1/2 when I got my permit, and then we could get our license at 16. Since my kids are almost 15 1/2, I felt somewhat ok with moving forward with this process. Also, this summer, we’ll have a bit more time for them to practice driving.

I truly can’t believe we are here. I’ve told the story before that when we found out we were having twins, the first words I said to the doctor were, “When they turn 16, will we have to buy two cars?” I’m not sure why I thought sixteen years ahead, but wow…that feels like yesterday! Also, no, we aren’t getting two cars any time soon! Thankfully, they’re used to sharing what they need to share.

I thought I was ready for this, but it turns out that I’m actually not!

Favorite Mom Meme:

Please tell me this will get easier…

Like for real….will I ever feel at peace about this?!

Bonus Fave: Flashback Friday”

Take me back to the only “car” they wanted to “drive” was attached to a grocery cart!

Weekly Recap:

I had a few posts this week in case you missed one:

I hope you have a wonderful three day weekend. We don’t have much on tap which is exactly what we need. Hadley has big plans to make her first drive to Starbucks. Oh, how exciting!

Hall Bathroom Update

Hello and happy Thursday!

I’m excited to share a post all about our hall bathroom that we updated recently. We’ve lived in our house for over ten years, and I can’t believe that this bathroom is the last thing we chose to complete. It probably should have been the first thing we did!

It’s such a small space, and it’s the bathroom the kids use…kind of. They used to always use it to get ready, but when we redid Hadley’s room last year and bought her a vanity, that really did help alleviate the amount of time she needed to be in there getting ready. For whatever reason, through the years, the kids never wanted to shower in there, so they’ve made their way down the basement to shower and use Trav’s bathroom. Well, a couple of months ago, he had enough, and said it was time to update the hall bathroom.

We are fortunate to have a neighbor who likes to do renovations. Through the years, he’s helped us with many things including the other two bathrooms, kitchen back splash, sun room floor and more.

Trav had a couple of guys from the farm help with the demo, our neighbor did the labor and installations, and Trav and I made the design decisions. haha

I’ve shared a few snippets with you along the way….including this pic of the bathroom with only the tub left standing! We had to take down the wall because we put in a pocket door during this renovation.

When we came back from spring break, our neighbor had put down the new floor and a few days later put in the shower tile.

The next step was that we had someone hang the wallpaper. A guy my sister-in-law had used on her bathroom hung the bathroom wallpaper in about an hour! It’s from Rifle Paper Co., and it’s soo pretty.

Then, it was time for the sconces and vanity to be installed…

…as well as the mirror and faucet fixtures.

The last major step was that we had our existing tub resealed. When we first started this project, we’d talked about getting a new one, but this is the original iron tub, and it would have been hard to take out and whatever we put back in would probably be a bit smaller and of lesser quality.

Truthfully, I would have loved to get rid of the tub, but for resale, it’s our only tub in the house. Also, with this being the guest bath, I guess it is nice to pull the shower curtain shut rather than have guests see all the shower products.

Anyway, last week, a guy came and resealed the tub. Shew! That stunk, but the smell was gone by the next day when he came back to finish up.

Over the weekend, we put the shower curtain up and finished up the bathroom renovation after seven weeks!

Here’s the before…

…and here’s the after…

We decided to turn the vanity to go on the other wall which gives more floor space. Of course, it’s a smaller vanity (36 inches), but we still have a few drawers and some under the sink storage. I think it fits the space nicely.

The sconces are from Amazon, and the mirror is from Home Depot. My friend who helped with Hadley’s room make over suggested them, and they are perfect.

I’ve had this beach picture of the kids in Isle of Palms framed in the old bathroom as well, and it’s my fave.

The floor tile is from Lowes, and it’s just perfect!

Exciting stuff! We also got a new toilet. The other one is oval and took up a bit more space…and it certainly felt like it took up more space because the door would open right in to it. The pocket door has changed that feeling.

I still love this little “moment” with the cute tray and canisters.

Here is the before of the shower area (and the bathroom door on the right):

The pocket door truly provides such a drastic difference in the space. We still need to choose a neutral paint color for the hall, so it will probably be a couple of weeks before the hallway is painted.

Travis found the shower tile, and when it was first installed, I liked it…but wasn’t sure how it went with the floor. Well, it’s amazing what grout can do because once the tile was grouted and we started piecing the bathroom back together, I went from liking it to loving it!

The resealed tub looks brand new!

We went with brushed gold fixtures throughout and a rainfall shower head. As expected, Hayden wants to still shower in the basement, so this is most likely Hadley’s shower now…and she’s not mad about it!

The little cut out is perfect for her shampoo, conditioner, shave cream, body wash and razor. I snapped this pic before she officially moved back in to the bathroom.

Walking past this space definitely puts a smile on my face…

…and I’m happy with all the little details!

Now we’ve lived in the house so long that it’s time to circle back to some of the original changes we made ten years ago! I do think we want to repaint the kitchen and living room if we can settle on a neutral color.

The rest of us love the update, but Hayden said I made the bathroom “too southern.” haha! I said we can call her Dolly!

Teacher Talk Tuesday – 10 EOY Things

Hello and happy Tuesday!

I hope your week has started off on the right foot! Today, we don’t have school as we typically have election days off…but I don’t know that there are any primary elections today?

As the school year wraps up, I feel like my to do list is a mile long, and my brain is in overdrive, but that’s just how it is every year.

Today’s post is a Teacher Talk Tuesday post all about end of the school year things you might not know teachers deal with as the school year wraps up.

Ten things you might not know about end of the school year.

One. Testing!

Testing, testing and more testing. All of our 10th and 11th graders take the ACT the second Tuesday in March. The juniors’ scores are a part of our accountability, and the sophomores get a good (and free) practice run before their junior year.

We have KSA (Kentucky Summative Assessment) within the last two weeks of the school year. Again, it’s the sophomores and juniors that test. This year, we did two tests on Tuesday and two on Thursday last week. It was kind of nice to have a day in between of testing for a little break and to have a normal Wednesday schedule for the school.

Two. Schedules.

As the school year wraps up, we anxiously await hearing what our schedules will be for the next school year. Yep…high school teachers don’t necessarily teach the same thing from year to year.

Love that for us.

Some years we’ve gone into the summer not knowing what we will be teaching the next year. Last year, we found out right after spring break which was unprecedented! This year’s timeline was very fair and we found out last week what we will be teaching…but not necessarily the schedule with class periods and planning periods. I think we will know that soon.

This year, I teach English 1 (Adv. and co-teach). Next year, I will have the same, but with two English 2 classes. At the moment, I don’t know that I’m thrilled to have three preps, none of which are any kind of elective. Nothing is set in stone, so we’ll see how it shakes out.

Three. Classrooms.

Our classrooms can change year to year, but it’s not usually something that’s mandatory. More than likely, if a “better” room opens up, based on seniority, a teacher can request to move to a different room for the next year.

That being said, there have been times where admin has requested certain teachers move to be closer to their department or maybe a first year teacher is moved next to a veteran teacher.

If you do move rooms, it’s probably quicker and more efficient to move what you can yourself. Of course, custodians will move heavy things like filing cabinets, but anything that’s manageable, it’s best to do yourself (and/or with help, of course).

Before the end of the school year, we always have to label our desks, bookshelves, filing cabinets, etc with our room #, so that when things get moved out so the custodians can wax our classroom floors, everything *hopefully* gets put back where it belongs. We often even draw a “map” on our board where certain tables and bookshelves should go.

Four. Purging and freebies.

Teachers love to give things away. At the end of the year, there’s usually a good pile in the workrooms with “free to a good home” note stuck on whatever…anything from bookshelves to books to lamps and more.

I try to throw away/recycle/organize every day in May…thinking my future self will thank me later!

Five. Meetings.

We have after school trainings before testing, and our weekly PLC (professional learning community), department and faculty meetings continue every week after school.

That being said, for teacher appreciation week a couple of weeks ago, we received “the gift of time” with our weekly meeting canceled.

The day after the students’ last day, we have a faculty meeting and wrap up the school year.

Six. Planning for next year.

In late April/early May, we start receiving emails about professional development plans, dates to save, etc. for the next school year. Sometimes, this info is overwhelming as we’re just trying to wrap up this year and now we’re being told to think about the next year.

We have to do “safety trainings” every year, and they are typically due by Labor Day. These trainings can be started after our last teacher work day, and most of us knock those out in the summer. These trainings are over anything from blood borne pathogens to how to safely climb a ladder to school safety. I swear that they add more and more of these every year, and we probably watch 12-15 hours of trainings that don’t count as professional development…Just another part of our glamorous job!

Seven. Technology.

Students turn in their Chromebooks with three days left in the school year. That means that their final exam has to be on paper which is actually my preference anyway. I’m always happy when they turn in their Chromebooks and have one less distraction.

Eight. Final exams.

For the English 1 final, students are taking our unit test which is multiple choice, so that will be easy to grade which I appreciate as well.

At my school, final exams are worth 10% of the students’ overall grade.

Also, the last three days are a different kind of schedule as we see some classes for an hour and then two classes for two hours for them to complete their finals. It’s a weird schedule, and I wish we’d just do two days of three finals each and let students go home early. That would be way less hectic for sure!

Nine. Teacher work day/flex time.

The day after the students’ last day is always a teacher work day. We start with a faculty meeting that typically lasts a couple of hours. During the meeting, the admin talk about end of the year things and we always celebrate retirees. (Lucky them!) I do appreciate that we aren’t “just meeting just to meet” and when we are finished we get the rest of the time in our rooms. Typically, there’s an end of the year check list that we get a few signatures on like that we submitted grades, technology is accounted for and more.

I’m really grateful that my district does “flex time” because that means we don’t always have to make up all of our contract days. We account for our hours missed for snow days, for example, and submit a form with hours we worked outside of our contracted school day. Some years, we don’t have any hours, and this year, I had to submit a form documenting 30 hours. For example, if I didn’t turn in hours for today, I’d be at school without the students. This was an odd year where we did have four traditional snow days rather than NTI online days. So, those four days at 7.5 hours a day equals 30 hours we document. If I didn’t submit the form, my last day of school would be June 3 instead of May 29.

Ten. Graduation.

All of the high schools in my district graduate at Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington. While teachers have always been expected to attend, this is the first year that it’s required. I’m always surprised that it hasn’t been required in the past. This is also the first year that teachers will have the black graduation gowns with the hoods from our colleges. I always love graduation, but I do feel like the bigger schools rush through and it’s not as personal as graduation is in smaller schools.

Well, we’re officially down to five more days of school. I can’t believe I’m wrapping up my 23rd year in education, and the kids only have three more years left of high school! I’ll try not to think too much about that and enjoy my summer with them…the last summer with them relying on me to drive them where they need to be!
